Gunmen kill 7 policemen, 3 others in Jigawa State attack

Gwaram, a community in Jigawa state was invaded by a group of men on motorcycles and cars yesterday, shooting sporadically.


The gunmen broke into a bank, without any confrontation, operated for more than two hours, killing seven policemen and a security guard


Other areas attacked were a Sharia Court and the Gwaram Local Government Secretariat using guns and Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs).


The attack took place the same time the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors were holding a meeting in Dutse, the state capital.


Explaining what happened, Mr. Tambari Yabo Muhammad who is the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone one said: “There was indeed an unfortunate attack at around 1:30 am that lasted till 4 am, when about 200 terrorists came in droves, using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). They attacked a Sharia court, Gwaram local government secretariat and a bank”.


He added that “four riot policemen, three conventional policemen and a security guard were killed in the attack.


“Though no arrests were made, the police were able to put up a fierce fight that repelled the attacks and from the blood stains all over, I am sure that they too must have recorded casualties who they probably took away with them”.


He disclosed that the gunmen were numbered up to 200 on both motorcycles and cars.


Similarly, another incident occurred in Shadna village, Bosso local government area of Niger state where two persons were killed by unknown gunmen while three other persons sustained injuries.


The gunmen invaded the village at about 11pm on Tuesday.


A survival of the invasion disclosed that the gunmen came into the village on a motorcycle during a monthly traditional dance event.


He revealed that the gunmen were three in number and they started shooting sporadically the moment they entered the village, killing two villagers instantly.


Those injured were rushed to the hospital and the dead have been buried.


The Nigeria State police spokesman, Richard Adamu Oguche who confirmed the attack said that the police had started patrolling the community to forestall further attacks. (0)
