Workers Day: PDP Calls For Sober Reflection

As workers all over the world celebrate 2014 Workers Day Thursday, May 1, the Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has enjoined civil servants in the State to use the occasion to reflect on the neglect, disregard and hopelessness that have become the fate of the public service in the State.

The party in a statement issued by Jerry Needam, Special Adviser, Media to the State Chairman, Felix Obuah regrets that the insensitivity of Gov Amaechi administration to the plight and welfare of the civil servants in the State has grossly made nonsense of the State workforce, leaving practically nothing to celebrate.

Recalling that thousands of newly recruited teachers in the State are still owed nine months salary arrears, while those interviewed and due for promotion since 2011 have been endlessly waiting for their letters besides similar disregard and non-payment of salaries of other staff of government agencies like the TIMARIV, the PDP questions the rationale for still marking the Workers Day in the State.

Workers, the party demands, should rather use the period to protest against the regime of segregation, apathy to welfare of civil servants and criminal diversion of their salaries and entitlements to party politics where their welfare is indignantly being scarified on the altar of inordinate political ambition of those entrusted with the state resources.

Not taking advantage of this opportunity to voice out, the PDP remarks, will amount to injustice to self and incarceration of the totality of the State workforce, stressing that this strange and satanic tradition of treating the real sustainers of the State economy with ignominy and sarcasm by Gov Amaechi and his APC members must not be allowed to continue unchecked.

While wishing workers in the State a happy and safe but sober celebration  of the Workers Day, the State PDP Chairman, Bro Felix Obuah prayed that God will in His infinite power facilitate the ouster of the incumbent administration in the State so that the workers will have a new lease of life under a caring and welfarist government being envisaged by the PDP starting from next year.
