Gunmen kill lecturer in Rivers State

Unidentified gunmen on Thursday murdered Dr. Vincent Eebe, a lecturer of the Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic in River State.

The lecturer was shot several times by his assailants along Bua-Yeghe in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Eebe, a senior lecturer and the Director of Industrial Training of the polytechnics, Bori, was shot dead by suspected assassins on his way home from the polytechnic.

It was learnt that  Eebe was heading back to his Port Harcourt residence before he was bracketed at Bua-Yeghe.

A community source, who gave his name simply as Henry, said that the victim was trailed by his killers from his office.

The source pointed out that when the victim noticed that a car was trailing him, he immediately ran out of the car in his bid to escape an attack.

It was gathered that when Eebe raced out of his car, the hoodlums ran after him and shot him several times and waited to ensure that he was dead before they drove off.

The source revealed that the remains of the victim have so far been deposited in a mortuary in the area.

“The man was coming back from the school where he lectures before some unknown gunmen followed him. As he noticed that the people behind him were after him, he stopped and ran out of his car. The boys followed him and fired several shots at him.”

Reacting, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Muhammad, confirmed the killing of the polytechnic lecturer.

Muhammad explained that the slain lecturer was together with some people when four armed men trailed and shot him at Bua Yeghe at about 4.20pm

He said, “The report we heard was that he was trailed. Four armed men operating in a green Toyota Camry shot at them at Bua Yeghe along Bori Road.”

The state police spokesman, however, added that investigation had since begun with a view to apprehending and bringing the killers to justice.

Meanwhile, the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People has condemned the assassination of Eebe.

MOSOP President, Mr. Legborsi Pyagbara, who spoke in Port Harcourt on Friday, expressed shock at Eebe’s death and called for the immediate investigations into the killing.

Pyagbara called on the police to ensure that the perpetrators of the dastardly act are brought to justice.

“MOSOP considers this sustained tendency of killings as most unnecessary and unfortunate as it does not in any way help to resolve our peculiar disadvantaged circumstance but has painted Ogoni in bad light and destroyed the gains of our collective struggle for justice.

“On several occasions, MOSOP has advised our people against allowing Ogoni to be a theatre of killings and violence as the implications and effects are borne by Ogoni and Ogoni alone.

“We thus passionately call on the police and other security agencies to investigate this recent incident with a view to bringing the culprits and their sponsors to justice,” Pyagbara said.

Fuel crisis: Gunmen shoot at motorists on queue

The-yet-to-abate fuel scarcity in the country assumed a dangerous dimension yesterday in Ilorin, capital of Kwara State as three gunmen opened fire on motorists queuing for petrol.

The incident happened at one of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Filling Stations in the metropolis.

In the ensuing melee, it was gathered that the gunmen left two young men and a lady with serious injuries.

Some others on the queue as well as officials of the station were said to have scampered for safety.

The incident, according to eyewitnesses, occurred in the early hours.

It was gathered the gunmen were part of some youths who forced themselves on the station, located along Offa Garage road to manage the gates.

They were there to reduce the practice by many motorists to jump the queue in their desperate bid to get fuel.

An eyewitness said: “It was due to an argument among the boys; you know they are thugs and they have been at the gate but we don’t really know what led to the argument but we just suddenly heard the gunshots and it was later discovered that some people were seriously injured.”

The three victims, it was gathered, were rushed to a private hospital, Yusjib Industrial Medicare along the same axis.

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the facility Dr Yusuf Abdulraheem told newsmen the three victims were in stable conditions.

He said one of them had been taken to a laboratory where the bullets in him would be extracted.

Kwara police command’s spokesperson Ajayi Okasanmi confirmed the development.

He said one of the gunmen has been arrested, adding that a locally made pistol and some live cartridges were recovered from the suspect.

The manager of the station promised to call back.

He however did not respond to text messages from reporters.

Gunmen kidnap four oil workers in Edo State

Four workers of an oil firm have been abducted by suspected kidnappers along the Benin-Akure express road.

The abductors were said to have taken their victims into the forest.

The Nation gathered that the oil workers were going for a training programme in a nearby state when they were abducted.

Driver of the vehicle conveying the oil workers to the training venue was shot, while a woman managed to escape from the scene.

Last week, some boys were arrested within that axis with four AK 47 rifles by the police.

Cultists kill one in Bayelsa

Gunmen, suspected to be cultists, have shot and killed one person in Amarata area of Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The victim, popularly known as Ashanti, was reportedly shot close to his residence at about 8pm on Sunday.

A source, who pleaded to remain anonymous, said Ashanti met his death when he went to buy some fruits opposite his house.

“He just crossed the road to buy some fruits when a group of boys opened fire on him. He was shot on his forehead,” the source stated.

It was learnt that Ashanti was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where he was confirmed dead.

It was further learnt that the incident caused pandemonium among residents of the OMPADEC area of Amarata as people ran in different directions for safety.

But residents of the area have expressed concern over indiscriminate arrest by police operatives following the incident.

“We are tired of the incessant police raids. Instead of investigating and arresting known cultists, they are arresting innocent people and extorting money from us,” a resident, who gave his name only as Lazarus, lamented.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident.

He said, “The victim was shot on the forehead by a group of boys suspected to be members of a cult.

“The victim was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre where he was confirmed dead. The corpse was deposited at the FMC morgue for autopsy.”

Gunmen kill 15 farmers, burn houses in Nasarawa

No fewer than fifteen Agatu farmers were killed by unidentified gunmen in Udeni Ruwa district, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nararawa state, while five others drowned.

It was learnt that the suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded two settlements in Udeni Ruwa district of the state on Sunday night, setting houses on fire.

But, the Police Public Relation Officer, Nasarawa state command, ASP Ismaila Numan Umaru, who confirmed the incident to The PUNCH in a telephone interview in Lafia, the state capital, said seven people were killed and many houses were burned during the attack.

According to him, the attack on Agatu farmers was a reprisal attack by the Fulani herdsmen following a report that three of their men got missing in the area when they took their cows for grazing.

He said, “There was a report that three of the Fulani herdsmen, who took their cows for grazing on Agatu farm land got missing while another body of the victims was discovered.”

The police image maker, however, added that the command had already deployed its men in the area to avoid further breakdown of law and order

Breaking News: Jerry Needam, PDP S.A. (Media) Escapes Another Kidnap, Assassination Attempt

The Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the Rivers State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jerry Needam in the early hours of Tuesday, December 22, 2015 escaped a kidnap and assassination attempt.

The incident which is the third highly organized politically motivated plot on his life, occurred at his residence in Port Harcourt, during which scores of armed men engaged the Police in a fierce gun battle, leaving the compound, rooms and vehicles riddled with bullets.

Reports said the daredevil men stormed his residence in the wee hours of Tuesday morning and shot sporadically to gain entrance into the compound.

During the incident which lasted for over 2 hours, Mr. Needam was said to have put a distress call to the Police who promptly arrived his residence and engaged the gun men in a fierce gun battle.

At the end of the bloodletting battle, three of the gallant Police officers, including an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) lost their lives while two other Police officers and Mr. Needam’s security guard, who suffered serious gun shots are now receiving treatment at a private hospital in Port Harcourt.

Mr. Needam speaking shortly after the failed kidnap and assassination attempt on his life and family, believes that the mastermind of the kidnap and assassination attempt are his political opponents who desperately want him silenced following his strong political views and his penchant for speaking the truth.

Meanwhile, Needam, who few hours ago had interactions with the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Musa Kimo, on the incident expresses confidence in the ability of the Command to investigate the matter and fish out those behind the assassination attempt on his life and entire household.

While commending the prompt response of the Police to the distress call and their demonstration of professionalism in the encounter with the heavily armed assassins, the PDP Media Aide sympathizes with the Police command and the families of the deceased policemen, praying that God would give them the fortitude to bear the loss of their beloved bread winners.

He also expresses gratitude to God who saved his life and his family in all of these incidents and to all friends and well-wishers who on hearing the news of the condemnable incident, called to show concern and to wish him God’s protection.

Breaking: Jonathan escapes assassination attempt in Bayelsa

Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan allegedly escaped assassination attempt by some gunmen in Bayelsa State.

The men who according to an unconfirmed report were suspected militants loyal to the All Progressives Congress in the state, drove into his convoy.

 

The men were reported to have driven into a short motorcade conveying the former President from Julius Berger bridge area.

He was allegedly trailed and chased to the entrance of his Yenagoa private residence in Kpansia area.

The report said the gunmen were overpowered by the security operatives attached to the former President and taken to the Bayelsa State Police Command for further investigation.

 

Effort to reach the former President associates for confirmation and responses proved abortive at the time of filing this report.

Gunmen kidnap 78 year-old Mrs. Abiante in Rivers State

Information reaching us says over 15 heavily-armed gunmen Saturday night kidnapped 78 year-old Mrs. Mabel Abiante, in her residence at Ngo, headquarters of Andoni local government of Rivers State.

Mrs. Abiante was kidnapped at about 8.50pm while watching television in her sitting room. She had closed from her shop at about 8.30pm.

Eyewitnesses narrated that the gun men, who shot sporadically, had positioned some of their men around the house while others moved into the sitting room where they whisked Mrs. Abiante away.

The gun men were, however, challenged by one of Mrs. Abiante’s daughters who was home when they struck. But her efforts did nothing to stop the gunmen who used the butts of their gun on her head and right hand leaving her with swollen body..

The kidnappers made their escape through a side of the Ngo River close to the Abiante family house.

They were yet to make contacts with the family as at the time of this report.

Peterside condemns attack on Oyorokoto settlement by gunmen

The Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the April general elections in Rivers State, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside has condemned, in very strong terms, recent attacks and killings at Oyorokoto fishing settlement in Andoni Local Government Area by unknown gunmen.

In a press release issued yesterday to NF-Reports, Dr. Peterside, decried the spate of repeated attacks on Oyorokoto, the largest fishing settlement in the entire West Coast of Africa while calling on the authorities to ensure that the Joint Task Force [JTF] Unit established sometime in the past in the area, is stationed at the fishing settlement being a strategic and most viable economic centre in the Federal Constituency.

“The spate of attacks and killings of innocent inhabitants of Oyorokoto must be brought to an immediate halt so that the settlement will continue to provide livelihood to the numerous fishermen and their family members who live and work so hard for a livelihood at the settlement.”

Dr. Peterside stressed the need for governments at every level to be alive to their responsibilities, primary of which is the protection of lives and property.

“Governments must not shirk their responsibility of safeguarding life and property of citizens; this is the primary responsibility of government everywhere,” Peterside stressed.

Dr. Peterside called on security agents to diligently track down the criminals behind the incessant attacks on the fishing settlement including all those who may be sponsoring the criminals to ensure that a final stop is put to their nefarious activities in the area.

He called on the inhabitants of Oyorokoto to continue to be peaceful and vigilant but refrain from resorting to any actions that may bring them in collision course with the authorities.

Gunmen rob Catholic church in Abuja

ABUJA—Barely three months after the Catholic Church of Annunciation, Kubwa, was upgraded as a Parish by the Archdiocese of Abuja, suspected armed robbers stormed it and carted away valuable equipment and a Toyota Camry.

The robbers, who have kept Kubwa residents in persistent fear, especially at Arab road, Omega Paints Street and Sunrise Street, forced their way into compounds to carry out their nefarious activities.

According to the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Matthew Kwaggas, the robbers stormed the parish after Sunday’s service and removed most of the things used for thanksgiving, including bags of rice and drinks.

He also told the congregation during Mass that about two weeks after the first raid of the church, the robbers again broke in through one of the windows and removed all the public address systems, a Toyota Camry and  musical instruments.

Gunmen kill APC chieftain in Edo State

Some yet- to- be identified gunmen last Thursday killed Captain Samson Amineshi (rtd.), a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akoko- Edo local government of Edo State.

He was shot along the Igarra-Okpe road.

Amineshi, a former councillor, was believed to be preparing for the forthcoming council polls in the state.

He was said to be driving back home to Okpe after attending a social function in Igarra with two other occupants.

They were reportedly flagged down by the first set of gunmen who he was said to have dodged by speeding off.

Unknown to him, another group of gunmen laid metres ahead of him.

The late Amineshi told the occupants of his car to dock when the second set of gunmen suddenly appeared and fired directly at him.

The victim was said to have died on the spot. His killers later made away with undisclosed amount of money collected from the occupants.

Another version of the story suspected assassination as the gunmen were said to have shot directly at him and sped off in a motorbike parked nearby.

He was a former councillor and was believed to be preparing for the forthcoming council polls in the state.

Family sources said the matter has been reported at the Igarra police station.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Stephen Onwochei, could not be reached yesterday for confirmation.

150 fleeing Yobe residents drown, killed by Boko Haram

No fewer than 150 people drowned in a river or were shot dead fleeing Boko Haram gunmen who raided a remote village in Yobe State, local residents said on Tuesday.

“They opened fire instantly, which forced residents to flee. They shot a number of people. Unfortunately many residents who tried to flee plunged into the river which is full from the rain. Many drowned,” Modu Balumi, a resident of the village, told AFP.

“By our latest toll, we have 150 people either (shot dead) or drowned in the attack. The gunmen deliberately killed a fisherman who tried to save drowning residents of the village.”

Balumi said the bodies of many of the drowned were picked out by locals several kilometres away.

News of the attack was slow to emerge because the militants have destroyed telecom masts around the village, around 50 kilometres (30 miles) from Yobe State capital, Damaturu, since the insurgency began in 2009.

“Most residents, particularly women and children, ran towards the river in confusion,” said Bukar Tijjani, another villager, who confirmed the death toll.

“They were pursued by the gunmen who kept firing at them. In the frantic effort to escape, they jumped into the river, which was full to the brim.”

A local government official confirmed the attack but put the death toll much lower, at around 50.

The ambush came during the region’s peak rainy season, when most waterways in northeastern Nigeria are swollen and can flow with dangerous speed.

The village was still reeling from a raid by suspected Boko Haram militants on July 31 when at least 10 people were killed by gunmen who burned homes, food silos and livestock.

‎The Gujba area of Yobe state, where Kukuwa-Gari village is located, has been hit hard by Boko Haram violence in the past but had seen relative calm since troops reclaimed it in March.

In September 2013 scores of students of an agricultural college in the area were massacred as they slept in their dormitories.

In February last year dozens of students of a boarding secondary school in the main town of Buni Yadi were also killed in a gun attack on their hostels.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for both attacks.

The jihadist militia, which has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, has waged a violent campaign for a separate Islamic homeland in the northeast which has seen more than 15,000 deaths since 2009.

The military under President Muhammadu Buhari’s predecessor Goodluck Jonathan was heavily criticised for poor handling of the insurgency and its failure to free more than 200 schoolgirls abducted from the northeastern town of Chibok in April last year.

Nigeria’s new leader, who came to power on May 29 vowing to destroy Boko Haram, replaced his military chiefs last week, ordering them to end the insurgency within three months.

Gunmen abduct Winners"s Chapel"s pastor during prayer session

CALABAR- PASTOR Seyi Adekunle of Living Faith Church, aka Winners Chapel was on Saturday evening abducted by gunmen who invaded the church while he and other pastors were having prayer session in the church in preparation for Sunday services.

The gunmen numbering five were said to have stormed the church at about 7.50 pm when the pastors were praying in the main auditorium of the church and shot sporadically into the air before grabbing the pastor and bundling him into their car and drove off.

“Normally on Saturdays, we have a number of activities but the pastors prayer session comes last, it was while the session was in progress that the boys came in, shot into the air and took our pastor away”. A source in the church told Vanguard.

Pastor Seyi who is the head pastor of Province Two of the Church located along IBB Way, opposite the Margaret Ekpo International Airport according to our source has been in charge of the church since 2014 and has been carrying out massive construction work in the crouch.

‘He came here in 2014 and has been doing a lot work through the construction of a massive complex for the church auditorium and office accommodation which might have given the kidnappers the impression that he has money to give them as ransom”.

When Vanguard visited the church at about 1.00 pm on Sunday afternoon, the second service in the church was in progress handled by Pastor Seyi’s assistants and there was police presence outside inside the hall and in the premises.

“There was no policeman on duty here yesterday when the incident happened but this morning we had to request for some policemen from the Airport Police Station close by and these six policemen you see here were deployed to forestall any recurrence of what took place last night”

Mr Hogan Bassey, the spokesman of the Cross River State Police Command says the kidnappers are yet to make any demands “but we are closing on them and very soon I shall inform you on how far we have gone” he said

Gunmen kidnap Kogi High Court Judge, Kills orderly just in 5 minutes

Gunmen on Monday kidnapped a Kogi High Court Judge, Mr Justice Samuel Obayomi, and killed his orderly, Cpl. Usman Musa in an early morning attack. Obayomi of the Ebogogo High Court in the Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi was kidnapped while on his way to work.

His driver, Mr Ajayi Kolawole, told newsmen in Lokoja that the incident took place in front of the Executive Guest Villa at Okene GRA in the Okene Local Government Area of the state.

Kolawole said that the judge’s orderly, Musa was shot dead on the spot by the kidnappers in an operation that took place between 8:40 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. He described the three gunmen as heavily armed, unmasked and wearing dark glasses. The driver said the gunmen ordered the judge and his aides to lie face-down.

Kolawole said that the kidnappers opened fire on the orderly killing him on the spot. The judge had recently survived a ghastly accident and had just resumed work after three months in hospital. The Police Area Commander at Okene, Mr Kehinde Kolawole, said the driver had been detained to help in police investigations.

The Chief Judge of the state, Justice Nasir Ajanah, who visited Obayomi’s family, told his wife to let him know as soon as the kidnappers made contact. Ajanah promised that effort would be made to ensure the release of Obayomi.

Gunmen kill el-Rufai’s campaign coordinator

Markus Ishaya, a campaign coordinator to the Kaduna State Governor-elect, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, was on Tuesday killed by unknown gunmen.

Ishaya was said to have been trailed by the gunmen to his house in the Atuku Kasa area of Jema’am Local Governor Area of the state.

He was a local campaign coordinator of the governor-elect at the Atuku Ward.

According to the spokesman for the All Progressives Congress Kaduna Campaign Council, Mr. Samuel Aruwan, the coordinator was shot severally by the yet-to-be identified gunmen.

A statement by Aruwan said the APC in the state was notified of the death by the deceased’s family.

The statement said the killing of Ishaya had brought to 10 the number of members of the APC that had been killed in the state before, during and after the elections.

A family source said the men, two in numbers, who were heavily armed, stormed the residence of the APC chieftain and shot him severally, adding that “they didn’t pick any property in his residence except carrying out the ungodly act.”

The statement also added that “The Police have confirmed the incident. The police have also visited the scene of the crime and have commenced investigation.

“While we appreciate their prompt action, our expectation is that the security agencies will fully investigate this killing and prosecute the perpetrators.

“Security agencies must adequately protect Nigerians irrespective of their status and standing.”

The governor-elect, while condoling with the family, prayed for the soul of the deceased.

El-Rufai said, “Our empathy and prayers go to the family of Mr. Markus Ishaya and the entire community over this callous murder and desecration of human life.

“May Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest and give his family and friends the fortitude to bear this painful loss.”

Gunmen rob family conveying remains of son killed by robbers

EKU — Gunmen    suspected to be robbers, operating along Eku-Sapele road, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, weekend, robbed a family conveying the remains of their son, Efe Onosakponwha, who was a victim of the last Wednesday’s robbery attack at Eku by over 20 gunmen.

The incident, Vanguard gathered, occurred at about 5:10 p.m., Thursday, around Okerekpo axis of Eku-Sapele road while members of the Onosakponwha family, including mother of the deceased, were transporting his remains from Warri General Hospital to Eku for burial.

According to a female member of the family, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the family drove into the robbers who disposed them of N90,000 cash and other valuables, despite the presence of a corpse in the car.

The source said: “Oweing to the gravity of the gunshot wound Efe sustained, he was referred to the Warri General Hospital for treatment where N110,000 was demanded for treatment.

“His mother went back to Eku to source for the money but was only able to raise N90,000. Upon her return, she was told that her son, who was shot on the buttocks, with the bullet exiting through his groin, was dead.

“It was while they were transporting the remains of their son back to Eku that they drove into the robbers who equally rob and disposed them of their cash and other valuables despite the presence of a corpse in the car.”

The late Efe Onosakponwha in his early 20s, was a student of Samagidi Secondary School, Eku.

Gunmen snatch ballot materials, attack policewoman in Delta

Three gunmen at about 1.30pm on Saturday stormed a voting unit at Ebedeni ‎Ward 6, Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State and snatched ballot papers and boxes.

Before escaping, the gunmen descended on the only policewoman at the station, removed her head dress ‎ and took away her identity card.

The resident Electoral Commission in the state, Mr. Aniedi Ikiowak, was said to have visited the place shortly after the incident.

Gunmen Attack Evboriaria Primary School In Benin; 3 Teachers Critically Injured

Gunmen struck in Evboriaria Primary school in Sapele road, Benin  as three teachers were badly injured with bullet wounds last Tuesday.

The gunmen traced one Mrs. Oriafo who is a teacher in the school because of her expensive life. She drives Highlander Jeep which was the target of the robbers.

Speaking with NAIJA CENTER NEWS, a teacher who did not want his name mentioned said “nobody was killed in the incident, three people were badly injured. What happened was that one Mrs. Oriafo, a teacher in the school who her husband has a big pharmacy in GRA  drove her Highlander Jeep to school during the assembly time, she ran out of the car trying to quickly sign the attendance before the Headmaster close the time book, leaving her car key in the car.

Two of her friends who came almost at the same time equally ran to sign, after they finished signing, Mrs. Oriafo turned back to off her music and close her door. Meanwhile there was a car parked at the other side of the road, two of the boys in the car walked towards her and requested for her car key. She panicked and didn’t know where she kept it, she was looking for it and realized it was left in the car, they thought she was playing with them, as she was trying to take the key from the mouth of the door, they shot her hand and her finger cut off.

The boys came with a cut to size gun, they started shooting sporadically, so the bullets went straight to her friend who had signed before her and hit her on the lap while another bullet hit her by the wrist.

The third woman was about turning to run as the children at the assembly were also scampering for safety,  the bullet hit her on the chest and leg, she started vomiting blood and became unconscious. She lost a lot of blood and was later rushed to Specialist Hospital in Benin.

A female teacher who spoke to NAIJA CENTER NEWS correspondent, expressed her disappointment at the Ministry of Education that was informed about the situation and had done nothing, adding that the school and the families of those affected are presently responsible for the expenses.

She said” With all these, no information from local government in the area, no information from Ministry of Education even when they had been informed. The family and the school have been solely responsible for the expenses so far”

The first teacher who spoke with our correspondent also revealed that, three days after the incident, the gunmen came back to the school overnight to drop Mrs. Oriafo’s personal belongings at the Headmaster’s office.

Kano Police repel gunmen attack, two killed, two arrested

The Police in Kano State on Sunday confirmed the killing of two gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members in Kibiya Local Government area of the state.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Magaji Majiya, confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano.

He said the incident happened on Saturday around 5.30 pm, when gunmen, numbering about six, stormed the police station on two motorcycles but the police repelled the attack.

He said one of the gunmen was killed during an exchange of fire while the other was lynched by the community while trying to escape.

According to him, two of the gunmen were also arrested and were now assisting the police in their investigation.

“No policeman was killed or injured during the incident,” he said.

Majiya said the gunmen had also abandoned one of their motorcycles before fleeing the area.

He said security had since been beefed up in the area, adding that neighbouring states had been alerted in order to arrest the fleeing hoodlums.

Gunmen kill community leader in Ugbowo, Edo

A 66-year-old community head in Ugbowo area of Benin City in Edo State was on Saturday night killed by gunmen who invaded his residence.

The deceased, John Asemota, was the Odionwere (Clan Head) of Power-line community at Ugbowo.

The gunmen, seven in number, were said to have attacked the late Mr. Asemota’s residence at about 9:30 p.m. and shot him in the head and back.

The deceased person’s son, Osemudiamen Asemota, said three of his father’s tenants were also shot.

He said his father died on the spot, while his tenants were rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, where they were receiving treatment.

Osemudiamen said the incident was reported at the Ogbowo Divisional Police Headquarters which responded promptly by coming to the scene shortly after the incident occurred.

“It was the police that took my father’s body to the mortuary, while they also rushed those were shot to hospital for medical attention.”

He, however, ruled out possibility of robbery, alleging that his father was killed over community issues.

Some of officers at the Ogbowo Divisional Police Headquarters confirmed the murder, but refused to comment on the incident.

Pleading anonymity, one of the officers who was drafted to the scene of the incident said the matter would be handled appropriately.
