2 Arraigned For Selling Babies

The Lagos State Police Command, yesterday, arraigned two persons, Sunday Samuel, 28, and Chinasa Ezeokeafor, before an Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, for allegedly kidnapping and selling two children for the sum of N450, 000, each.


High CourtThe two accused persons were arraigned before the court on a five-count charge of conspiracy and  kidnapping, by men of State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, Lagos.


The police alleged that the accused persons, between the month of March and December 2, 2013, at Number 6, Oladunjoye Street, Igando Road, Lagos, kidnapped and sold a three-year-old boy, Yusuf Nasiru, and a 22-month-old girl, Joy Olowede, for the sum of N 450, 000, each.


Luck ran out on both men, however, after the parents and families of the second victim, Olowede, saw her on the back of the buyer who was about to travel back to Anambra State, from where they came to purchase the baby.


It was also gathered that the recovery of Olowede led to the recovery of Nasiru, at a community in Anambra State, in March, 2013.


At their arraignment on Thursday, the prosecutor, Etim Nkankuk, told the court that the offences are punishable under sections 409 and 275 (1) (a) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2004.


They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.


Their counsels, A. J. Akhator and O. Boniface, urged the court to grant their clients bail in the most liberal terms.


The lawyers also informed the court that the bail applications were in pursuant to Section 35 of 1999 the Nigerian constitution and Section 115 of Administration of Criminal Justice laws.


They further stated that their clients have credible sureties and have made affirmation not to jump bail.


Ruling on the bail application, the presiding magistrate, Mrs. A. A. Demi Ajayi, said the offences commuted by the accused persons are bailable ones and moved to admit the two accused bail in the sum of N1m each with two sureties in the same sum.


The matter was adjourned till May 7, for trial.
