Bakare, Yakasai, others describe Nyanya bomb as worrisome

Pastor Tunde Bakare on Monday described the Nyanya’s blast which claimed 71 lives in Abuja as worrisome.

PRESIDENT JONATHAN VISITS EXPLOSION VICTIMS IN ABUJABakare told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the insecurity in the country could affect anybody.

“This morning killings show that the country is not safe. We don’t know where next and who will be the next victim. It’s so sad and is totally uncalled for,” he said.

He urged the Federal Government to put better strategies in place to curb the menace, which he said, had eaten deep into the fabrics of the nation.

“Government cannot become helpless in a situation like this, that is why you have law in place and you have executive authority in place to do what is needful.

“Yes some will say they are brutal but we need to bring the problem to an end because innocent people are dying on a daily basis,” he said.

Bakari also called on Nigerians who know about the insurgents to expose them, stressing that anyone who hid such persons could be the next victim.

Similarly, an elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, condemned the killing, but expressed optimism that the problem of insurgency would stop someday.

He said countries like Afghanistan which suffered in the hands of insurgents for years was recently able to conduct a national election that was hitch-free.

“The blast is most unfortunate, but I believe that one day, it will stop.

“What is happening in Nigeria is not up to what happened in Afghanistan but now look at them, only last week they conducted a nationwide election and there was no mayhem.

“So, with time this will be over. You cannot fight this war over night, particularly if you do not know the other people.

“You have to put your tracking devices in place so that in the end you will be able to know the people perpetrating this mayhem,” Yakasai said.

He urged Nigerians to report suspicious movement in their neighbourhood to the appropriate authorities rather than complaining.

Also a former senator representing Bayelsa East, Nimi Barigha-Amange, called on security agencies to monitor those coming into the Federal Capital Territory to forestall future occurrence.

“It is becoming a recurring decimal. We believe that the security agencies will take control of the situation. We sympathise with the people especially families that have lost loved ones.

“We urge the security agencies to monitor closely those who are coming into the FCT, what they are bringing in,” he said.

Kenan Mamman, a delegate representing persons living with disability at the National Conference, urged the Federal Government to deploy necessary security apparatus, no matter the cost to save lives.

“The security agencies should tighten security, while security apparatus should be deployed no matter the cost to save the lives of Nigerians,’’ Mamman said.

Mamman said in the face of the present security challenges the number of people living with disability was on the increase.

He, therefore, urged President Goodluck Jonathan to assent to the Persons Living with Disability Bill, to enable disabled people have a voice in the country.

“ Nobody has prayed that God should make him disabled. If you are able today, you can be disabled tomorrow,” he said. (NAN)

In Ilorin, the Speaker of the Kwara House of Assembly, Mr Razak Atunwa, described the blast in Abuja as ungodly act and crime against humanity.

Atunwa, in a statement by his Media Assistant, Alhaji Abdul-Rahman Sanni, condemned the act in its entirety, and called on the security agencies to strengthen their intelligence gathering against occurrence.

The speaker stressed the need to curb the trend of the needless killings in the country.

He blamed the nation’s security predicament on lack of synergy, unhealthy rivalry among the security agencies and lack of political will to curb the menace.

Atunwa, while consoling the families of the deceased, called for the concerted effort by all Nigerians, irrespective of political, religious and tribal affiliations in checking such killings.

He enjoined Nigerians to continue to tolerate one another by putting the national interest above parochial considerations in order to salvage the nation from the verge of collapse. (NAN)
