Be Proactive In Tackling Health Issues In Rivers State, PDP Urges Amaechi

As the World celebrates Monday, April 7, 2014, as World Health Day, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Rivers State Chapter, urges Governor Rotimi Amaechi to be down to business and better observe the Day with a renewed and genuine vigour and commitment in tackling the multifarious diseases, sicknesses and other health related issues that abound in the State.

The PDP expresses worry over the series of complaints by the people and residents in the State on the deplorable health conditions and poor dispensation of medical and health services and the dearth of facilities, including beds and Emergency Vehicles in virtually all the State- owned health institutions in the State, including the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital, the supposedly General Hospitals and the Primary Health Centres in the 23 Local Government Area of the State.

The Party notes that apart from the apparent absence of drugs, there are clear and confirmed cases of shortage of Doctors and other health and medical personnels in those health institutions all over the State.

The PDP also believes that the Governor could take advantage of the World Health Day to address the wreak in the Ministry of Health which has become a drain pipe and home of fraud under this dispensation, causing tales of woes and anguish on tax payers and the general public.

The Party wonders why all the General Hospitals in the district headquarters are at a sorry state when billions of naira are been appropriated to the Health sector in the State every year, regretting that there are more deaths in the rural areas now than before because of lack of access to efficient and available medical services and personnels. Most of these deaths are avoidable if the State health system had not failed, the Party believes.

It is also the view of the PDP that the governor was only playing to the gallery on the Biolarvicide program when he claimed that a chemical used to kill larval pests were spread in some parts of the State to kill larvae and prevent the growth of mosquitoes, saying, if such program exists and was successful, after injecting billions of Rivers financial resources into it, why are there multiplication of mosquitoes in Rivers State?

The PDP, while expressing disappointment with the latest reports which put the State as the highest in the prevalence of HIV/AIDs infection in the country, and the increasing rate of Tuberculosis patients, as well as water born diseases and other ailments acquired as a result of poor sanitary condition in the State, called on the Rivers State Government to stop playing politics with people’s lives and commit the huge financial resources the State generates internally and receives monthly as federal allocation into the health needs of the people.

It is the Party’s conviction that prioritizing the health and medical services in the State will bring about healthy living and long life of the electorate and the masses. It is therefore imperative that the governor ensures the State Free Medical Scheme functions efficiently, so we don’t mark the next World Health Day in such a failed health condition.
