12 die, 28 injured in Eid-el-fitri crashes in Kogi State

The Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr Godwin Omiko, on Sunday said 12 persons died in five auto-crashes recorded in the state during the just concluded eid-el-fitri holidays.


He said the victims included a three-year-old girl, her mother, seven male adults and three other women of the 64 people involved in the accidents.


He added that 28 surviving victims sustained varying degrees of injuries in the accidents in the accidents which involved 11 vehicles and a motorcycle while others survived unhurt.


He spoke in an interview with journalists in Lokoja, while reviewing the activities of the sector during a one-week special operation of FRSC .


He stated that the accidents were caused by wrongful overtaking, tyre burst and over-speeding.


According to him, the accidents that occurred on Ankpa-Ayangba, Okene-Zariagi and Chikara-Gegu sections of Okene-Lokoja-Abuja roads were the most fatal.


Omiko appealed to motorists to install speed governor in their vehicles to guide against reckless driving.


Meanwhile, the Kogi State Governor, Capt Idris Wada, has urged residents of communities on the corridors of Kabba-Egbe-Ilorin road to take special interest in the safety of personnel and equipment of the construction company rehabilitating the road.


Wada spoke when he inspected ongoing work on the Kabba-Egbe-Ilorin road.


The governor represented by his Deputy, Yomi Awoniyi commended the construction company handling the project for its palliative measure which made the road motor able up to Isanlu even though it was not part of their contract term. He added that such a gesture was a display of the sensitivity of the company to its corporate social responsibility.


Wada reiterated the commitment of the state government to ensuring that the Kabba-Egbe-Ilorin road awarded recently by the federal government was completed on schedule.


He however charged the contractor to speed up the temporary sand filling of the failed portion of the road.


He appealed that the filling be done up to Egbe when the rain subsides, while the opening up of the shoulders and actual rehabilitation work be hastened to meet the expected completion date.


Wada described the Kabba-Egbe-Ilorin road as very crucial to the socio economic life of the nation, adding that the hardship faced by the people of the area and motorists who ply the road is long overdue.
