Police arrest INEC officer in Taraba for collecting bribe from politician

JALINGO—The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC resident commissioner in Taraba State, Alhaji Ahmed Makama has confirmed that his Electoral Officer in Ibbi local government area of Taraba state was in the police net at the police headquarters in Jalingo for allegedly collecting bribe from a politician from the area to manipulate election results.


The Electoral Officer who was attached to Ibbi to conduct the Saturday presidential and National Assembly elections was manhandled by angry youths in Ibbi for allegedly collecting 20 million naira bribe from a staunch politician in Ibbi to change the result of the state house of representative within the area.


The elections in Nwonyo II ward of Ibbi local government area was suspended by INEC as a result of the crisis that broke out between youths of the area and the Electoral Officer in the local government on Saturday. He however explained that affected Electoral Officer has been replaced by a Head of Department of the commission to conduct the elections.


“Yes the Electoral Officer in Ibbi was allegedly arrested over collection of money from a politician and he is under police custody. I informed the national chairman and he asked me not to secure his bail and I am not going to do that until the police concludes the investigation,” he said.
