Minister of State for Trade and Investments and Supervising Minister of Aviation, Dr. Samuel Ortom has stated that the ongoing reforms in the aviation section would be able to generate over 500,000 jobs in the nation’s economy.
He said the aviation roadmap as encapsulated in the reform agenda of the President Goodluck Jonathan led administration “has already started yielding monumental results.”
The Minister who made this known yesterday while fielding questions from Journalists in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, said the aviation sector had become a huge construction site due to government’s determination to uplift and upgrade infrastructure and facilities in the sector.
His words, “the aviation roadmap has given rise to the upgrading of all 22 federal airports, the building of five brand new modern international terminals in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, PortHarcourt and Enugu. Already work on the terminals have started and will be completed by 2015.
“Same roadmap also identified the future of perishable goods cargo in Nigeria; at the moment, 16 of those terminals are under construction and will also be completed by 2015
Ortom continued, “ This administration has also introduced the concept of aerotropolis which is intended to turn our airports in Lagos, Abuja, Kano and PortHarcourt into business hub offering world class businesses in travel tourism, entertainment, commerce and industries and lots more.
“Today the aviation sector contributes over N200billion to the country’s annual GDP but the industry can contribute over N500billion annually if developed further.
“That is our target in 2015, perhaps by 2020, the aviation sector should be contributing N1 trillion annually to the nation’s economy and also support well over 500,000 direct and indirect jobs.
“That is why I keep saying that the future for the industry is indeed bright; hence the implementation of the aviation roadmap will be executed with all diligence in order to transform the sector to a modern, viable, profitable and sustainable one.”
