India’s newly sworn-in Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a historic meeting with his Pakistani counterpart on Tuesday, raising hopes for a thaw in relation between the bitter rivals

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was among the south Asian leaders invited to Modi’s inauguration on Monday.

Sharif said India and Pakistan — who have fought three wars since independence in 1947 — now have a chance to improve their troubled relationship.

Things have been particularly tense since the 2008 attack on Mumbai which India blames on Pakistan-based militants.

Tuesday’s meeting came on Modi’s first full day as prime minister. He takes the reins of the world’s largest democracy as it struggles with an economic slowdown and a severe job shortage.

He had campaigned on a promise to fight bureaucratic sloth and fight corruption.

He started the day by paying tribute to India’s freedom movement leader Mahatma Gandhi before sitting down and getting to work.
