Escapee prisoner rearrested in Benin

The inmate, Osa Prosper, who escaped in Benin few days ago has been rearrested, controller of prison, Edo State, confirmed.


According to Mr. Effiong Etowa, Osa was undergoing rehabilitation and reintegration process into the society when he escaped from custody.


He said the prisoner was reaarested few hours after he escaped, adding that the inmate has few months to complete his sentence following his conviction of an offence relating to breaking and entering.


He said ” IT is true that a prisoner was brought from Benin prison to my Agric garden, here in the headquarters to do some work for his own benefit considering that he wil soon be discharged from our custody.


He slipped off from the watch of his custodian and was recaptured along Lagos street and brought back to our custody.


Mr. Effiong who wondered the rationale behind inmate escape said his problem has been compounded following his attempt to escape and he will be rearranged in court to try him for new offence.


The Controller said when inmates are remanded, the prison authorities are saddled with the responsibilities of giving the inmates opportunities of choosing from different vocations of their choices, pointing out that Osa was on such a reformation process when he escaped.


He said ” From my record available, he came here on the 16 of December, 2014. just late last year and his sentence was for a period of one year. But with this behaviour, he has not behave well, so he is not entitled to the remittion of the sentence.
