Two soldiers, allegedly on illegal duty, have been arrested by the Elemoro Police Division in Oko-Olomi Village in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State.
It was gathered that the soldiers were arrested following complaints by members of the community that they were collecting money and harassing passers-by in the community.
It was gathered that the soldiers, who claimed to be on a special duty, fired several shots into the air to scare people from approaching them, leaving seven persons injured.
The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Elemoro Police Station arrived the scene and arrested the soldiers along with two patrol vehicles used for the illegal duty.
The soldiers were taken to the police station where they made statements, claiming that they were there on the invitation the traditional ruler of the community.
However, when the traditional ruler was invited, he was said to have denied knowing them.
Sources said the DPO signalled Abati Barracks in Yaba to confirm if the soldiers were sent to the community by military authorities. It was learned that they were there illegally.
Efforts to get the police spokesperson’s reaction proved abortive.
At press time, no fewer than 12 soldiers were said to have been sent to the area to confirm if the arrested soldiers are impostors.
Meanwhile, about 20 police officers have been stationed at the police station, while investigation was still ongoing.
