A bloody clash between members of All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital yesterday left one person dead.
Private properties and vehicles belonging to political parties and their members were equally destroyed during the clash.
However, eight persons have been arrested and are being interrogated by the police over their involvement in the violent attack that disrupted public peace for several hours.
Trouble started at about 8:00am in the morning when some APC members, armed with brooms moved to the centre of the state capital for a cleansing exercise following the PDP campaign rally led by President Goodluck Jonathan, on Saturday.
APC members, according to a source were stopped midway by combined team of security agents from carrying out the cleansing.
Their initial resistance led to fracas between them and some supporters of PDP which provoked the police who dispersed them with tear gas canisters.
Things however got out of hand when one person was said to have been shot dead during the clash.
Addressing newsmen on the incident, the APC chairman in the state, Chief Jide Awe accused the police of alleged brutality against his party members and said that Governor Kayode Fayemi was tear-gassed during the peaceful rally held by the party , while the security attached to him were allegedly disarmed by Mopol commander, Mr Gabriel Selenkere.
He however, called on the Inspector-General of Police to effect the immediate transfer of police leadership in the state within the next 24 hours .
Also reacting, the state PDP chairman, Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe said the violence was allegedly provoked by the APC members who were on parade in the town.
He also claimed that the rampaging APC members vandalised motorcycles with his party’s inscription. (Leadership)
