(SOUNDBITE) (Dari) FEDAH AHMAD, PROVINCIAL ELECTION SUPERVISOR IN PANJSHIR, SAYING:

“We want to make sure that our people do not miss the chance to cast their votes in any part of the country. We use all possible ways to reach them with the ballot papers so that we will be able to chose the country’s future leader.”

Afghans head to the polls on Saturday, for the second time in weeks, to vote for Hamid Karzai’s replacement.

While the first round election went off without incident, many are paying close attention to Saturday’s runoff — which takes place when the Taliban fighting season is in full swing.

Newly elected Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko faces a litany of challenges ahead. There are concerns over the state of the eastern part of the country — questions over the fate of Crimea and the challenge of keeping the lights on in Kiev.

Ukraine and Russia are locked in debate over gas prices.

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk says Russia is making an offer Ukraine must refuse.

(SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) UKRAINIAN PRIME MINISTER ARSENY YATSENIUK, SAYING:

“Russia has offered us a decrease of the gas price by $100 (US Dollars) as a so-called discount. I want to state officially that we are familiar with such Russian traps. The discount is set by the government of the Russian Federation and can be canceled by the decision of the government of the Russian Federation.”

Yatseniuk says Ukraine is holding out for changes in the contract with Russian exporter Gazprom .

(SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) UKRAINIAN PRIME MINISTER ARSENY YATSENIUK, SAYING:

“That is why our offer was, is, and will be the same. We demand changes in the contract. If gas is a political weapon, then it is clear that it is a political weapon in the hands of the Russian government. And if gas is a commodity, as all over the world, then we are trading on the basis of the contract and not on the basis of whether Russia likes or dislikes the Ukrainian government.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin does not buy it.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT, VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING:

“The reduction is too little for our Ukrainian partners. They want more, although it’s not clear on what basis. If this is the case, then it seems that the issue is being driven into a dead end.”

Moscow says Ukraine has stacked up more than $4 billion in debts to Gazprom and must pay off some of that before a new price deal can be reached.

Congolese troops take up positions on the border with Rwanda Wednesday in the wake of heavy weapons fire between the two countries.

The two countries accuse each other’s armies of mounting cross-border raids that led to a rare exchange of attacks.

Congo accuses Rwandan forces of sparking an incident in North Kivu province by seizing and later killing a Congolese soldier.

Rwanda says its army killed five Congolese troops after they crossed the border and attacked their units.

The clash ended months of relative calm in the volatile border zone.

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)

STORY: Local farmers in northern Argentina conducted dramatic rescue operations on Wednesday (June 11) after torrential downpours and flooding threatened the lives of cattle and horses.

Farmers in the province of Corrientes guided their cows, bulls and horses across a river to safety.

The animals swam as they were anchored with ropes to small boats.

Some needed special assistance or even a ride to get across the current.

Torrential rains pummeled the region over the weekend, causing water levels to surge in the Parana and Iguazu rivers. The famous Iguazu Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was closed to visitors as brown floodwater cascaded over the falls and obstructed walkways and viewpoints.

Sao Paulo metro strike suspended, but fears loom ahead of World Cup

Monday started badly in Brazil’s biggest city when police used tear gas to disperse striking workers.

Subway workers have been on strike for five days over pay increase demands.

They’ve caused widespread disruption and giant traffic jams in San Paulo just days before the city hosts the first football game of the World Cup.

But late on Monday, there was a slight turnaround as workers voted to suspend the strike.

There’s still a possibility, though, that the walkout could be resumed.

Union leaders are set to restart negotiations on Wednesday and any decision, they say, depends on rehiring workers dismissed for striking.

(SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) METRO WORKERS UNION PRESIDENT ALTINO DE MELO PRAZERES, SAYING:

“It was voted on at this moment that we return to work and that the strike is suspended and that we hold another assembly on the 11th. Maybe the strike will return on the 12th and this will depend on the readmission of the 42 workers who were fired.”

A small victory came from the homeless workers movement, which said it wouldn’t be taking to the streets after the government agreed to build public housing units.

By early evening there was more bad news. Part of a monorail under construction for the tournament collapsed onto a busy throughfare below, killing at least one passerby. Workers were rushing to complete it as it was behind schedule.

Preparations for the World Cup have been beset by construction delays and strikes but the government is still hoping to try and turn it around before kickoff on Thursday.

Floodwaters overrun lookout points at Argentina falls

Murky brown flood water charged over Iguazu Falls on Monday (June 9) after heavy rainfall caused the Parana, the river feeding into the falls, to overflow.

Walkways and viewpoints at the UNESCO National Heritage site were almost completely submerged under water, prompting authorities to close the normally bustling tourist hotspot shared by Argentina and Brazil.

Not only did the flooding leave potential visitors to the falls in the lurch, but it also took a casino riverboat for a spin.

The 90 metre (295 feet) boat, which is in the process of being converted into a floating casino, was set adrift on the Iguazu and Parana rivers before being rescued by the coast guard.

Torrential rains pummeled the region over the weekend, causing the water surge.

Basques form 75-mile human chain calling for independence vote

A human chain 123 kilometers long (or 75 miles) in the northern Spanish region of Basque.

Tens of thousands of people held hands Sunday protesting for the right to vote on independence from Spain.

The demonstration was organized by a group called “It’s in our Hands”.

It estimates that 100,000 people took part.

The Basque Country – with its own language and culture – has traditionally sought greater self-rule from Spain.

Violent separatist group ETA declared an end to its armed struggle in 2011, amid dwindling public support.

But a democratic independence movement has gained force in recent months, triggered in part by a long economic crisis and political corruption.

WARNING-STORY CONTAINS GRAPHIC IMAGES

A massacre in Democratic Republic of Congo.

Residents in the eastern province of South Kivu stand helpless after up to 37 people were killed.

The victims include women and children. They were found shot, stabbed or burned inside their homes.

The regional governor blames the attack on a dispute over cattle.

Residents though see it differently.

(SOUNDBITE) (Swahili) LOCAL RESIDENT, ALAIN KIKUNI, SAYING:

“The police and the army know there are armed militias who are not more than 20 kilometers from here. The army is also here and government knows about them, the commander of the army based in Bukavu knows about their existence, even the governor. It is actually the second time the killings have taken place here and we wonder why the government allows them to operate freely.”

The province is home to members of tribes who fled neighboring Burundi after a civil war in 2005.

Residents say it wasn’t the first time that such attacks happened in the region.

The Congolese government has said it plans to target foreign rebels operating there after defeating the M23 rebel group late last year.

After brief meetings with Ukrainian President-elect Petro Poroshenko, Russian President Vladimir Putin says he likes what he heard about ending the violence in Ukraine.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING:

“I cannot but commend the position of Mr. Poroshenko that bloodshed should be stopped immediately in the east of Ukraine. And he has a plan in that regard. What plan this is you’d better ask not me but him. He told me about it in a few words but it’s one thing to talk about it here in France and it’s another thing to explain it in his own country.”

Putin called for an end to Ukrainian military operations in the east, saying that a resolution will need to come between Kiev and people in the East.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING:

“The parties of the talks in this case should be not Russia and Ukraine – Russia is not a participant in this conflict – but rather the Kiev authorities and the supporters of federalization in the east. I can’t say for sure how it all will be implemented and how it all will be formalized – but I liked the overall intention, and if that all happens in reality then conditions will be created for developing our relations in other spheres, and in economy in particular.”

Poroshenko is expected to unveil his plan to resolve the crisis after his inauguration Saturday in Kiev.

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)

London’s tallest building, the Shard, was evacuated on Thursday (June 5) morning after smoke started billowing from the basement of the 87-storey skyscraper, a fire brigade spokesman said.

The alarm was raised about 0930 GMT and about 900 people were evacuated from the multi-purpose landmark tower. By 1100 the fire brigade said the smoke appeared to be dissipating.

A police spokesman said there were no reports of any injuries or arrests.

The Shard, Western Europe’s tallest skyscraper at about 310 metres (1,016 feet), was funded by Qatar’s royal family and opened in 2012. Its office space is about 50 percent occupied.

The distinctive elongated glass-clad pyramid was designed by architect Renzo Piano and has 72 habitable storeys housing six companies, including the world’s largest hospital group, Hospital Corporation of America and New York-based investment bank Duff Phelps.

Restaurants Oblix, Aqua Shard and Hutong moved into the tower last summer, and its top floors have become a tourist attraction in the capital, reserved for visitors who pay up to 30 pounds ($50) to get the highest view of London.
