Police Inspector General, Solomon Arase

While saying that five tricycle riders were also arrested for alleged breach of agreement, the police boss said, “The tricycle riders were arrested for contravening the laws of working beyond 10pm.
“We met with their union and agreed that tricycle riders should work and stop at 10pm, instead the suspects work beyond 10pm to help robbery suspects accomplish their evil mission.”
He said that the suspects would be charged to court after investigations would have been concluded.
No fewer than 222 cultists have publicly renounced cultism in Edo and Delta State.
While 43 were reported to have renounced at the Ambrose Alli University (AAU) Epkoma, while 179 others renounced at Ozoro Polytechnic, Ogwashi Uku, Asaba, Delta State

It was learnt that Ashanti was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where he was confirmed dead.
It was further learnt that the incident caused pandemonium among residents of the OMPADEC area of Amarata as people ran in different directions for safety.
But residents of the area have expressed concern over indiscriminate arrest by police operatives following the incident.
“We are tired of the incessant police raids. Instead of investigating and arresting known cultists, they are arresting innocent people and extorting money from us,” a resident, who gave his name only as Lazarus, lamented.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident.
He said, “The victim was shot on the forehead by a group of boys suspected to be members of a cult.
“The victim was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre where he was confirmed dead. The corpse was deposited at the FMC morgue for autopsy.”
LAGOS—Twelve men, who have been on the wanted lists of the Police for allegedly beheading one Afeez Obokwu in May this year, have been arrested by officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti Yaba.
Cultists
It was learned that Obokwu’s headless body was recovered on the highway at Oyingbo railway while the severed head was recovered by the Police at the Otto Ilogbo, Ebute Meta area.
The suspects arrested by the Police on tip off by members of the public include Kazeem Ajani, Suliamon Bello, Idowu Morawo, Abiodun Adeleke,Taiwo Jayesimi, Aberdeen Sanjowa,Abubakar Umaru, Ogunlade Dayo, Sodiq Olalere, Lekan Ajayi, Jamiu Wahaab and Kudus Olatunde.
While describing the suspects as serial killers, the Police said some of the suspects were earlier arrested and charged to court but were released.
From investigation, the suspects belong to two rival cult groups called the Otto Boys with allegiance to the Eiye cult and the Apapa Boys with allegiance to the Aiye cult with their base at the Ebute-Meta area of the state.
The suspects in their confessional statements to the Police revealed that they had participated in various killings across the state.
Narrating how they beheaded their victim, one of the suspects, Taiwo said his gang members killed four persons in a supremacy fight and beheaded one of their victims, Afeez Obokwu .
“My name is Taiwo but popularly called Figo. Sometimes in May, there was a crisis between the Otto Boys and the Apapa Boys. I belong to the Otto Boys. The leader of our gang is called Dangbe.
“On that particular day , our gang killed four rival cult members of the Apapa Road gang. We went to Apapa Road and engaged them in a shootout where we killed four of the Apapa Road cultists,” he said.
Taiwo Jayesimi listed those killed to include Akin, Fatia, Afeez Obokwu and Eleto, adding that they used cutlass to behead Obokwu. “The Apapa boys also killed some of our boys namely Abeeb, Tunde, Gani and Baba Benti. It was a gang war of supremacy between our gang and the Apapa Road Boys,” he said.
One of the suspects, Aberdeen, who claimed to belong to the Otto Boys cult, disclosed that he had been arrested and charged to court before.

The police on Friday alerted the public to an intelligence report that some people were trying to smuggle arms and thugs into Kogi State ahead of the governorship election to hold today.
Police Inspector General, Solomon Arase
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, in charge of Operations, Mr. Sotonye Wakama, who disclosed this, said for that reason, travellers going into the state should expect to be searched thoroughly.
Wakama also announced restriction of movements in the state from 6.30am on Saturday till after the election.
He advised travellers who planned to pass through the state to take alternative routes.
Kogi State is a major link between the Northern and Southern parts of the country with Abuja/Lokoja Road recording heavy traffic daily.
The AIG stated that the directive was to ensure violence-free election and aide security agencies, as well as other accredited personnel involved in the conduct of the election to do their jobs unhindered.
He also warned the public that there would be thorough screening of people.
He said, “If you know you are going to travel and pass through Kogi for any reason, I will suggest that you postpone or delay that trip, if you can. Or perhaps, you can take a more circuitous route and go round Kogi rather than through Kogi. Or if you can, you can take a flight.
“There are two basic reasons for this. First. if you are coming through Kogi and you are going to other states for business, it is certain that you will be stopped and screened because we have intelligence that some people are trying to move in arms and thugs.
“So we will screen everybody thoroughly. This will amount to inconvenience to some of those legitimate road users. If they can avoid it, they can pass around Kogi.
“The second reason is that, it will prove to be a distraction to the police and other law enforcement agencies from our duties on election day and we do not want to be distracted.”
Wakawa said, “The IGP has asked me to be here to supervise the election.
“As far as the police and other sister agencies assisting us are concerned, our duty is to protect lives and property and this extends to the lives of the personnel of the Independent National Electoral Commission and their materials. It includes the voters, and by extension, the inhabitants of Kogi State.
“There will be restriction of movement on Saturday from 6.30am until after the election. The restriction of vehicular movement is to enable operational staff of the INEC and law enforcement agents to go about their businesses unhindered, and for registered voters to go to polling booths and cast their votes without any hindrance.”
He described the restriction of movement as important while noting that there would be inconveniences as Kogi is a hub of travellers in the country.
Meanwhile, there was tension in major towns of Kogi State on Friday as the Independent National Electoral Commission concluded arrangements for today’s governorship election in the state.
Saturday PUNCH’s correspondents observed that the tension was heightened by fear of likely violence among residents as well as accusations and counter-accusations by supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and the opposition All Progressives Congress.
The governorship election did not hold in the state in the last general elections because the incumbent governor is yet to complete his four-year term in office.
As early as 8am, residents of Lokoja, the state capital, stormed Felele, Kabwa, Lokongoma and Kanaja markets to buy foodstuffs and other consumable items.
The state government had declared Friday as a work-free day as part of preparations for the election.
There was fear among residents that the election could be marred by violence following reports of “importation of small arms into the state.”
A resident of Lokoja, Idris Abdulsalam, who spoke with Saturday PUNCH, said, “There have been reports that some people are bringing arms into the state, but we have been assured by the security agencies that the election will be peaceful.”
Armed policemen were seen patrolling major towns, including Lokoja, Ankpa, Kabba, Okene and Idah.
11,000 policemen for 2,548 polling units
Amid tension ahead of the election, there was massive deployment of police officers in the state on Friday.
The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ovye Williams, said that the police had deployed 11,000 personnel to man the 2,548 polling units in the state.
He added that 4,969 anti-riot police officers had been deployed to complement the conventional police personnel.
Our correspondents observed that there had been periodic patrol by police officers, especially in Lokoja, the state capital. Also there had been helicopter surveillance in the city.
Police warn troublemakers
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Mr. Sotonye Wakama, said in an interview with journalists that the police had got some reports that some people wanted to foment trouble.
He therefore warned troublemakers to vacate the state, adding that security agencies would deal with them if caught.
Wakama said, “We have got intelligence regarding intending activities on that day. I want to seriously warn that we will come down heavily on anybody regardless of his or her status or stature, real or perceived who poses any problem.
“We will have the person apprehended. He or she will be detained and the matter will be prosecuted. It will not end there. We will also go after sponsors of violence; we will go after them and prosecute them. Personally, I will not want problems to persist after the election but if they feel that they have the might to challenge the federal power, we shall demonstrate to them that this is not possible.”
No armed policemen within 300 metres of polling units
Wakama said no police officer would carry arms within 300 metres of polling units. According to him, with the security situation in the country, it will be unfair to ask security agencies not to carry arms during election.
He said, “You also know what the country is passing through today. If you are asking policemen not to carry arms and walk around when there is likelihood that other people may carry arms and disrupt election, then it will not be fair on us.
“Those who are carrying arms will not be in the polling units. They may be around the collation centres to protect the officers collating the results, but certainly not in the polling booths.
The DIG urged voters to feel free to vote for the candidate of their choice.
He warned against unruly behaviour at polling booths and collation centres, adding that the police would ensure the protection of the voters, INEC officials and other personnel involved in the conduct of the election.
Police to video record, take photographs
He stated that police to officers had been directed to take video and camera recordings of events during the election.
He said this would enable the police arrest all culprits even after the election and use such materials as evidence at tribunals.
Wakama appealed to voters to peacefully cast their votes and avoid any act that could instigate violence after results had been announced.
He said, “I advise that once you (the electorate) have cast your vote, go back to your house, allow the INEC officials to continue their duties and collation will continue from there. Where a lot of people gather and announcement has been made in favour of one against another, it usually results in jubilation and this could generate some violence. We advise that if you can, vote and please leave and go back to your house after casting your vote.
“Our officers have been instructed to use telephones and cameras to take pictures of people who are fomenting trouble. We will analyse the pictures and videos and pick the suspects at a later day so far we can identify them.
“We have asked our officers to take pictures of things. This will also provide evidence to the tribunal after the election so that we can use that evidence to trace who the sponsors of the unruly people may be.”
Presidency, APC ask military to rig election – PDP
The PDP, commenting on the preparations for the poll, alleged that the Federal Government and the APC planned to use military operatives to rig the governorship election.
The PDP said the military ought to have been allowed to concentrate on its statutory role of providing peripheral security during elections.
The party said information available to it indicated that some compromised military personnel, led by a colonel, had been detailed by the Presidency to carry out specific assignments in favour of the APC candidate in the poll.
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in a statement on Friday in Abuja, said the development was not only a recipe to civil disorder, but also a clear invitation to total disruption of free and fair poll in Kogi State if not checked.
He said, “Available intelligence shows that the deployment in Kogi State of the army colonel, who is a known APC sympathiser, is part of the fallout of last week’s secret meeting coordinated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation where orders were issued to clamp down on PDP members and supporters to pave the way for some pliable INEC officials to manipulate the election in favour of the APC.
“Compromised troops have already been detailed to Dekina Local Government Area, the largest PDP stronghold in the state and home of Governor Idris Wada, where they have been instructed to create panic, strong-arm PDP supporters, frighten and scare away voters ostensibly to deprive our party of its expected large votes from the area.
“We are also aware of how the head of security of APC candidate’s campaign organisation, a retired Army General, is coordinating the movement of partisan security operatives into other key local governments, including Igalamela, Ofu, Ankpa and Idah, to harass and frighten PDP supporters and provide a leeway for the APC to manipulate the election.
“The PDP also has information of the copious involvement of a retired police officer, who is working with some men of the Directorate of Security Services in providing illegal arms, vehicles and cover for APC thugs who have been positioned to attack PDP supporters during the election.”
He said it was shocking that President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC government, a huge beneficiary of free, fair and credible election conducted by the PDP, would be involved in the issue he alleged that PDP was involved in.
Nevertheless, he said his party had resolved that no amount of force and intimidation would sway the Kogi State people from exercising their franchise and using every means within the law to protect their mandate.
Metuh said, “While we charge our members and the entire people of Kogi State to be vigilant and continue to assert their constitutional rights, we also call on the security forces to note that their duty is primarily to the nation and its citizens, and as such must ensure that they do not become tools in the hands of anti-democratic forces seeking to truncate our democracy.”
PDP’s allegation baseless –APC
The APC described the PDP’s allegation as baseless.
The APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said the party’s confidence was hinged on the track record of performance of its candidate.
The chairman stated this via a text message in response to enquiries from Saturday PUNCH.
According to him, the party has so many things working in its favour and that the abysmal performance of the incumbent in office has made the job even easier.
Odigie-Oyegun said, “I am confident of our victory in Kogi. I was personally there on three campaign events and the effect of our message was electric.
“Secondly, the incumbent is grossly a non performer while on the other hand most easily recall that the last taste of development in Kogi State was when our candidate was the governor.
“We already won as opposition all Senate seats, majority of the seats in the House of Representatives 40 per cent of the seats in Kogi State House of Assembly. So, allegation that we are planning to rig the governorship election is baseless.
We’re neutral –Military
The Acting Director, Defence Information, Col. Rabe Abubakar, also denied the PDP’s claim.
Abubakar said that the role of the military was clearly spelt out during a stakeholders’ meeting that the military would not be involved in the entire process of the election.
He said that no military personnel would be allowed to function as an escort or to play a role at the polling units.
Abubakar added that the military was completely neutral and apolitical.
However, Abubakar said that the military would be deployed in strategic locations to prevent hoodlums from taking the laws into their hands and to maintain law and order.
Abubakar said, “We had a meeting of the stakeholders and the position of the military is very clear. No military personnel should be part of the escorts; no military personnel would be at the polling units. No military personnel is authorised to do that.
“We are apolitical, we are neutral, we are not going to be involved in the conduct of the election.
“However, we will have troops in strategic places to maintain law and order.”
We are for peaceful poll –INEC
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kogi State, Mr. Hussein Pai, said all sensitive and non-sensitive materials had been transported to different locations.
He assured of the readiness of INEC to effectively conduct a hitch-free election.
He also said the card readers had been configured and ready for the poll.
The Commissioner of Police in Edo, Chris Ezike, who confirmed the arrest to newsmen, said it was part of the efforts by the command to maintain law and order in the state.
Cultists in Edo State
According to the police, the suspects were arrested during a raid in Ekpoma, following recent cult clashes recorded in the town, which also hosts the Ambrose Alli University.
Ezike noted that the suspects were being screened by intelligence officers from the command.
He recalled that the command had vowed to make Edo uncomfortable for criminals when he read the riot act to senior officers and the rank and file of the command on Sept. 14.
He said, “Cultists are criminals; I will not allow them to operate in Edo. You know there was a cult war in Ekpoma recently. So, I directed that the situation must be brought under control.
“And since the raid which lasted for two days, Ekpoma is now calm. We arrested 46 suspects. Pump action and AK47 rifles and ammunition were recovered from them; we are screening them,’’ he said.
Police in Benin have arrested 14 Junior Secondary School (JSS) students over their alleged involvement in cult-related activities in Benin City.
Cult clash
The students whose age ranges between 12 and 15 were picked when a crack team of policemen stormed Oguola Secondary School, Saint –Saviour, Benin City, last Thursday.
Dependable sources hinted our reporter that the teenage suspected cultists are being screened at the state criminal Investigation Department, SCID, police headquarters, Benin City.
Principal of the school, Mr. Ehanire Reuben said that eight of the students were nabbed at flash spots in the school compound.
He stated that their arrest prompted the police team to conduct a search on some students in the classrooms.
Mr. Ehanire added that items believed to be emblems of notorious cult groups in Edo State were recovered from them.
He however, maintained that reports made against the students by some parents may have triggered the raid.
He also disclosed that prior to the onslaught; he was told that a student teacher in the school was attacked as his phone and wallet were taken by some students who equally attacked other persons in the area.
Mr. Ehanire appealed to the police command to release those found to be innocent.
The Spokesman for Edo police command, DSP Stephen Onwochei stated that the raid on the school followed a tip-off.
DSP Onwochei said that though those arrested were underage, the paraphernalia found on the students called for proper investigation.
He maintained that the police command would not leave any stone unturned in its renewed war against cultism and other crimes in Edo.
Information gathered by NAIJA CENTER NEWS has confirmed the Senior Special Assistant on Youth Enhancement, also the Chairman of War Against Indiscipline (WAI) Committee in Edo State who was arrested by the Special Crack Squad in Edo State on Friday as a leader of Eiye fraternity.
Police Inspector General, Solomon Arase
The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase had sent a SCS designated in the troublesome cultism-related violent crimes in Edo State.
At the moment, a total of fifty-six suspected vicious cultists linked to the recent cult related violence was arrested on Friday by the Squad and are undergoing interrogation.
Among those arrested were eleven highly placed persons including Olukoga David, the present SSA to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who is confirmed to be a ring leader of the cult group in the present violence.
Edo State government had denied to NAIJA CENTER NEWS on its officials involvement in the ongoing killings in the state, saying that police would have figured it out if there were any.
According to a source closed to Olukoga, popularly known as Koga, the SSA is a senior leader in Eiye confraternity, adding that the arrests were properly done and one of those arrested are innocent.
The source said “He is really a senior leader in Eiye confraternity. The arrests were properly done. Non of them is innocent
“Most of them got their appointment as a result of the inputs they made toward the governor’s election using their groups. You know Eiye is bigger in Uniben and Ife than the other cults hence Koga’s place of prominence in Oshiomhole’s ranking.
“The police investigation will come to naught unless Arase stood his ground. There are enough evidence to indict them. None is innocent. I pity Koga particularly. I still don’t know why he will continue to use Eiye as his only qualification to get things. ‘
Information gathered has revealed that Koga who claimed to come from Akoko-edo in Edo State is originally from Ondo State.
The Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole has said that he is working seriously with the security agency in the state to end the spake of killing by frenzy cultists.
The governor who spoke with NAIJA CENTER NEWS through one of his aides on Social Media & Public Affairs, Victor Oshioke disclosed that the government will address the increasing killing during their weekly security meeting.
Mr. Oshioke said ” The present spate of killings started less than a week ago , so I believe the issue will be extensively discussed by the Comrade governor and heads of the security agencies during their weekly security meeting. Certainly they will come up with a plan to stem the tide.
The police is the agency that is statutorily in charge of providing security. The governor as the chief of security officer of the state, helps the police with strategy, support and laws to to make the task easier.”
The governor’s aide denied that the governor has anything to do with the cultists saga, he cleared that the governor has not in anyways held meeting with cultists in a move to settle the battle.
Mr. Oshioke also denied knowing any knowledge of cultists being members of the governor’s cabinet as speculated.
He said “I can assure you that the governor has never held a settlement meeting with cultists. But the police are making arrests daily.
“There is no cult member in the Oshiomhole government, if there was any I believe the police would know what to do. Anyone who speculates that the Comrade governors will mortgage the security of Edo state and his legacy just to please a cabinet member who he appointed and can fire at any time is just being simply malicious.
Asked if he knew any cult members among the lawmakers, Mr. Oshioke said “I am not a cult member so I cannot tell you who is a cult member and who is not.”
The rate of killing in Edo State has increased over the weeks with families of their targets not left out of the attacks.
NAIJA CENTER NEWS had reported that two mothers were killed last week after some armed men traced their targets to their homes.
The recent development is strange since cultists do not usually kill relations if they missed their targets. The Edo youths are calling the state government do come to their rescue as walking on the street is no longer safe.
A 27-year-old barber was on Tuesday shot dead by gunmen suspected to be cultists at New Benin in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
It was learnt that the late barber, simply identified as Patrick, was accosted by his assailants in front of his shop and shot at a close range.
Another man was reportedly killed at about 7am, at Second East Circular road, in Benin, the state capital.
A 65-year-old wood seller, Mrs. Philomena Evbuomwan, who witnessed the barber’s death, said the gunmen shot their victim in the head and chest and ensured that he was dead before they left.
Evbuomwan added that she was threatened by the gunmen, who pointed a gun at her.
She said, “I was selling wood when Patrick greeted me. I later sat with him. Suddenly, three boys walked towards us.
“One pointed a gun at my head and later dropped it. He shot Patrick; the other one also fired a shot.
“The third person took his gun and tapped Patrick. When he saw that he was dead, they ran away. After that, I fainted.”
This brings to six the number persons said to have been killed by suspected cultists, four of which were reportedly shot dead last weekend.
It was gathered that the cult clashes might be a fallout of a scuffle at one of the polling units in the state capital, during the March 28 election, which led to the death of a member of one of the cult groups.
The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Stephen Onwochei, could, however, not be reached for comments on the incidents as of the time of filing this report.
BENIN CITY—There was tension at the University of Benin, Uniben, weekend after the gruesome murder of a 300-level student of the Department of Chemistry, Mr Gendedio Ejyrognene.

Inhabitants of Obiakpu Egbema in Ohaji/Egbema local council area of Imo State, have completely deserted the community, following the deadly clash of two rival cult groups, Degbam and Dewell.
Cult clash
Vanguard gathered that apart from the four people reportedly killed, including Chief Emmanuel Opara, property worth millions of Naira have been destroyed during the clash.
Our reporter, who made a spirited attempt to reach Obiakpu, was advised at Nmahu, Egbema, by some concerned escapees from the deserted community, to abort the trip.
“We are indigenes of Obiakpu. We are only taking refuge in Nmahu. Please don’t attempt going to Obiakpu. The community is very hot and dangerous for you to visit now”, they almost chorused in unison.
According to one of the escapees, who simply identified herself as Nkechi, “Obiakpu is now a ghost town. The clash has left sorrow, tears and blood on its trail. The cultists are very deadly and they unleash mindless mayhem on innocent people”, Nkechi recounted.
She recalled that signs of the current clash reared its ugly head June 7, 2014, when dare devil cultists who were dressed in army uniform, invaded Nwari village in broad daylight.
“Again, about 6am, June 13, 2014, a faction of the cult group invaded Obiakpu with sophisticated weapons, shooting, killing and maiming innocent people”, Nkechi said.
Another refugee from Obiakpu, who spoke on strict anonymity for security reasons, recalled with grief that “despite the fact that most of the protagonists and perpetrators of the cult war were known persons, nobody has been arrested to answer for their crimes”.
LAGOS— A 33-year-old man has been killed during a feud between two cult groups around Iba new site.
Cult clash

This unfortunately led to a battle that lasted several hours resulting in the death of a man simply identified as Hamburger, while several others were injured.
Vanguard gathered at the scene of the incident that for the timely intervention of policemen from the Ojo Police division it would have degenerated.
One of the victims, who was attacked with machete and an axe on his head and body, was rushed to the Igando General Hospital where he died yesterday from loss of blood.
According to a police source, who preferred annonimity, “already, 11 suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing and have been taken to Panti.”
Account of victim’s brother
According to the victim’s brother; “My younger brother was returning from work on Monday when he was attacked. There were deep cuts on his head, spinal cord and legs. We took him to the hospital where he died.
“He is my younger brother, he is not a cultist, he spent 10 years with me as an apprentice learning tiling and recently he had his freedom.”
