The fail attempt to announce the secession of the Republic of Biafra in the studio of the Enugu State Broadcasting Service has led to the death of two persons, including a policeman in Enugu on Thursday.
The BZF had been earlier declared wanted by the police after the group invaded the Enugu State Government to stand their flag of the Republic of Biafra.
The BZF invaded ESBS studio on Thrusday with men numbering up to 15, with compact disc which was said to contain the announcement of the secession of the Biafran Nation.
The BZF had earlier attracted attention on March 8 when members of the group invaded the Enugu State Government House to hoist the flag of the Republic of Biafra.
Our correspondent gathered that the Biafran activists, led by one Benjamin Onwuka, ordered staff of the broadcast station that were present in the studio at the time to allow them air the recorded announcement, and also make a live broadcast.
The broadcasters called the police after resisting the order. A police seargent who was part of the patrol team that rushed down to the studio after the alert in order to contain the problem was killed instantly by the Biafrans.
And a BZF member also died in the hands of one of the policemen.
The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Mohammed who during his address to the reporters alleged that the 13 paraded members of the BZF, including Onwuka, were arrested in their attempt to burn down the studio. Though he admitted that they came with an audio disc.
The CP also admitted that the BZF wanted to make a live broadcast. According to him, the group wanted to call on the youth of Enugu, including students to come out. He confirmed that their announcement was also written down on a sheet of paper.
The CP said, “They wanted to make an appeal calling on all boys in Enugu to come out, they also asked students to come out, those people with Keke NAPEP to come out, they wanted to order all public places to be closed today, all schools to be closed, all markets to be closed, and all government elected officials to surrender all their property in their possession.
“These people went there with the intention of trying to overturn the government.”
