Sanusi, APC, Presidency and the politics of Emir

By Ehi Ekhator, Naija Center NEws

It is obvious that the problem between the former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who emerged as the new Emir of Kano after contending with the son of the former Emir, Sanusi Ado Bayero and the Presidency is very alive.

Sanusi and Jonathan Sanusi and Jonathan

News filtered around on Sunday over the emergence of the new Emir, and the Peoples Democratic Party issued a congratulatory message to the alleged new Emir and later regretted doing so. Though many believed that the press statement by PDP was as a result of the party move to restore Sanusi Ado Bayero as the Emir.

It was also reported earlier the All Progressives Congress put pressure on Kwankwaso to make sure Sanusi Lamido emerge as the new Emir which will give them an edge for the coming election.

It could be recalled that on February 20, the Federal Government suspended the new Emir of kano, Sanusi from his position as the Governor of Central Bank over what it termed as ”financial recklessness”

A lot of drama ensued during the period, like seizing of Sanusi’s international passport and severe court issues from both parties. Federal Government sued Sanusi on the part of financial recklessness, and Sanusi sued the Federal government to get a restraining order from being investigated and to be restored back to his position.

Though these saga seems unfinished, yet the Kano state kingmakers selected Sanusi as their new Emir. This has led Nigerians wondering if the Presidency will drop the charges against the former CBN governor or will Kano people watch and allow their new Emir be sent to prison if found guilty?

The selection of Sanusi as the Emir did not go down well with the fans of the son of the former Emir  who later resorted to protest, destroying government properties on sight. A madness that was later restored by armed policemen and soldiers.

Meanwhile, there was another report that the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi who the Nigerians referred as ”tortoise of our time” the media governor who is never out of the story, was accidentally locked in Kano International Airport. Many believed it was a deliberate attempt. One of those is the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam El-Rufai who alleged that private planes were banned from landing at Kano International Airport which he referred to as a deliberate act to stop people from congratulating the new Emir.

What puzzles Nigerians is that after the mistake made by the People Democratic Party congratulating the wrong Emir, 24 hours after the emergence of the former CBN governor, Presidency is yet to issue a congratulatory message to Sanusi.

it was also gathered that the President who initially planned to visit Kano on Monday with his family suddenly called it off.

Sanusi was selected before Sunday.

Months before Sanusi hit his professional rock, he had earlier said he would not go for a second term, he was to step down after the end of his first term. He knew he would be the Emir, he had been hinted by some inner caucus. Sanusi is a member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, the same party with the Executive Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso who played a vital role in appointing the new Emir.

It would have been surprising if Ado Bayero’s son emerged as the winner following the desperation of the All Progressives Congress to stop Jonathan from re-contesting in 2015, or rather winning should he attempt to contest.

it would also be unfair to the people of Kano State if the entire nomination was political from the APC. It is not cleared if the former Emir belongs to any political party as the new one who is a big signboard representing the APC, one of those who hate President Goodluck Jonathan and his administration, one of those who believe that power must return back to the North.
