KEFEE´S DEATH- IGBUNU: MY TRIBUTE TO KEFEE
I had asked my mum in 2004 or 2005 to send me some Nigerian films and she sweetly sent me 3 CDs one of which had the picture
of a young lady wearing a stylish outfit that almost resembled the clothes that ABBA used to wear. I also noticed she had a horse tail in her hand.I was slightly angry cos I had asked specifically asked for movie but all my mum sent were musical CDs judging from what I saw on the CD jacket. I kept the CDs away for like weeks or few months, I can ´t really remember after which I settled down to watch them for lack of film availability in my house. I slotted the CD in the DVD player and behold what I saw was a spectacular performance of gospel music which held me spellbound.Thereafter, I showed the CD to my kids and friends then established contact with Alec Godwin and Kefee.I have been dazed for 2 days since a friend drew my attention to Kefee´s death. It is like a dream to me and I have been so depressed but today I decided to write this little tribute in her memory.
Kefee u may not read this but I will still do it with tears in my eyes. You brought style and innovation to gospel music. You were very unique in your songs and messages. You held unto God all through your musical career that even life challanges and peer pressure did not stop you from singing your kind of music. You touched many lives with your music, young, old , Urhobo and non Urhobos and even your fashion sense was a kind of pacesetter that I began to imitate some of your styles. You became an ambassador to the Urhobos and brought our pple and langauge to limelight. You made the whole of Niger Delta pround. You proved to Urhobo youths that it is important to speak the langauge because for your age and exposure you were well versed in it.You proved to the Urhobos too that the george material can be made fashionable. Your life alone was a gospel unto pple. You were indeed an inspiration that many especially children and youths began to come up with gospel music. You and I had a common nickname BRANAMA ,that my siblings and cousins began to tease me that you had to pay me royalty coz I had the name first. You were humble and respectful.Yo gave honour to whom it is due. You had a high moral value and tried to fight the course of women in some of your songs; you paid tribute to Dora Akunyinli.Coincidentally you 2 great women died in a space of just a few weeks apart. Alas! This is situational mother and child journeying to the world beyond.
Your death is a shock to me, surprising, mysterious, an IGBUNU, the same title you used in your one of your tracks. You died serving God, you prepared for it and I know you are now with God. This alone comforted me and was first explained to me by little daughter who is just 14.She is very right.
Thank you Kefee for all you did; thank you for the messages you brought us and left us. Thank you for reminding us us and showing us that we should hold on fast to God.Thank you for reminding us that we should give ours lives to God and reminding us that this life is full of vanity and that we are just transiting here.
Good-bye Kefee – BRANAMA with the angels because he who has God has much to show off ,BRANAMA FOR ONE WITH GOD IS MAJORITY. God -bye Branama Queen, you were uncrowned and u will continue to reign in our hearts.
