Governor Amaechi, APC Sponsored Protest Against NJC Decision, Selfish, Undemocratic, Irresponsible – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Rivers State chapter condemns and describes today’s sponsored street protest organized by the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi and leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC, over the decision of the National Judicial Council, NJC, on the appointment of an Administrative Chief Judge of Rivers State as that borne out of selfishness and irresponsiveness to the yearnings of the masses.

Wike Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, and Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike

The PDP notes with great disappointment the involvement of those who claim to be leaders and representatives of the people, including the senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District, Magnus Abe, in the protest, believing that if such persons truly represent the people, they would not abandon the people’s mandate and pursue an unpopular course, championing issues of retrogression and of no development effect on the State and the electorate.

The Party wonders why Gov Amaechi and the APC folks are adamant and have continued to adopt non civilized attitude of hiring jobless youths in the series of protests and public events organized since his defection to the APC, the latest of which is today’s June 11, 2014, demonstration at the Rivers State Government House and at the Gate of the State Judiciary by some political mercenaries at the instance of their paymaster, Gov Amaechi.

The PDP received on good authority that participants of today’s protest were paid N10,000 each while some were promised cleaning jobs and appointment in their various LGAs and at the State Sanitation Authority. A promise we are sure will never materialized.

The PDP is of the view that rather than disturbing the fragile peace in the State on an issue that has been dispassionately addressed by the most revered and highest judicial body, the National Judicial Council, NJC, in an attempt to save our democracy and protect the peace of the State, the Rivers State Government and the APC leadership would have considered public opinion and respect the decision of the eminent jurists, who constitute membership of the body, and also show adherence to the rule of law which the Party claims to be doing.

It is therefore most disappointing that the Rivers State Government and its drivers are yet to come to terms with the reality of the situation regarding the issue of who the Chief Judge of the State is.

It is also an issue of worry that some leaders of the APC and a serving Senator will use such protest as a platform to regain lost relevance and confidence of the masses after deceiving the world on a claim of rubber bullet shot at him by the police during a similar event also in Port Harcourt. We believe there are issues certain persons ought to have grown above, as allowing oneself involve in them, further demeans ones personality and people’s perception of who we are.

Most irresponsible also is the fact that the State Government appears not to show concern to the plights of the thousands of civil servants and other public workers whose salaries have been delayed following the financial bankruptcy of the State.

In our candid opinion, rather than using the little available funds in the State treasury to fund the APC protest against the NJC genuine action, and others we are told are in the coffin, the Governor would have at least demonstrate some sense of patriotism by paying up the workers’ salaries. Using State funds for such protest is a waste of State resources and public fund, an abuse of the rights of the people and negligence of his statutory responsibility to the people.

The PDP therefore, calls on the Governor and the APC leadership to immediately halt their planned disbursement of the now lean financial resources of the State for several protests and actions of the party on issues of no benefit to the masses.

We also call on the people of the State particularly, the youths not to make themselves available for such retrogressive actions of the APC and the selfish agenda of the Governor and the Senator who is seen to be making efforts to regain his battered image and his selection as a governorship candidate of the APC.
