Cesar Azpilicueta says he would welcome added competition for places at Chelsea, with defensive targets being heavily linked with summer moves.
It would appear Ashley Cole’s time at Stamford Bridge is coming to an end as he reaches the end of his contract, so reinforcements will be required.
Azpilicueta’s position at left-back, which he nailed down upon forcing Cole out of the picture, would be among those under threat.
The Spaniard is a right-back playing on the opposite flank, so a more natural fit may be sought in an important post.
Atletico Madrid’s Filipe Luis is reported to be Jose Mourinho’s preferred choice, with a double swoop planned on the Liga champions for their Brazilian full-back and top marksman Diego Costa.
Azpilicueta is not sweating on his future involvement, though, with regular strengthening part of football culture.
Instead, he says he will return from World Cup duty ready to scrap for a regular role at Premier League title hopefuls Chelsea.
He said in the Evening Standard: “When you play in a top team, there’s always a lot of competition for spots.
“I always fought for my spot with respect to all my team-mates and will continue doing so.”
