Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State has ordered security agents guarding oil pipelines’ right of way in the state to shoot-at-sight any vandal found tampering with the pipes. He also called on parents to caution their children.
He tasked stakeholders in the oil industry to tackle the menace of pipeline vandalism, which he described as a source of untimely death for youths.
According to him, fighting the menace of pipeline vandalism should not be left in the hands of the state government alone, without input from stakeholders.
Orji, who spoke at an awareness campaign against pipeline vandalism at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, depot, Osisioma, Aba, described those involved in the act as oil thieves.
Represented by the Commissioner for Petroleum and Solid Minerals’ Development, Chief Don Ubani, the governor said pipeline vandalism must be stopped at all cost because of its adverse effect on both human and economic activities in the state and country.
He said: “Since the state government, with the help of the Federal Government, reactivated Aba depot of the NNPC, we have never left them to be on their own.
“Our eyes are there always and those found to be involved or intending to be involved have always been transferred out through the instrumentality of the state government.”
Orji also urged oil marketers to desist from buying products from oil thieves to discourage them from the illegal act.
He said: “If the marketers stop buying such illegal products and the tanker drivers stop lifting them, it is one of the ways to stop the issue of pipeline vandalism, since if they do not get buyers they will stop vandalising the pipelines.”
