Native doctor collected N.51m from us for enlistment in Nigerian Army, 3 applicants allege

Three applicants on Monday told a Senior Magistrates’ Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa State that a native doctor, Abdul Idris, collected N510,000 from them to enlist them in the Nigerian Army.

CourtIdris is standing trial on a one-count charge of cheating.

At the case’s hearing on Monday, the accused pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N500,000.

Testifying in court, one of the applicants, Hassan Adamu, told the court that the accused allegedly lured him into paying N170,000.

He said this was with a promise to introduce him to an Army General who will aid his enlistment in the Nigerian Army.

Adamu said the accused absconded to an unknown place, after he gave the native doctor the money.

Also testifying, another applicant, Kefas Williams, said the accused collected N170,000, for his (Williams) enlistment in the Army.

Another applicant, Danlami Giwa, told the court that he gave the accused N170,000 to prepare a “charm’’ for him to aid his enlistment in the Army.

He said he did not hear anything from the accused thereafter.

After listening to the testimonies of the witnesses, the magistrate, Mr Jeremiah Danladi, adjourned the case until April 14, for further hearing.(NAN)

DEFECTION: Court orders 37 defected PDP members to resign

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday asked 37 former members of PDP to resign their seats at the House of Representatives for defecting to the opposition APC.

37 Defected PDP members 37 Defected PDP members

The court perpetually restrained the legislators from effecting any leadership change in the assembly.

The court was delivering judgment in a matter brought by PDP asking that the legislators should not be allowed to take part in the activities of the assembly.

The presiding judge, Justice Adeniyi Ademola, held that the lawmakers no longer had any business, morally and legally in the assembly.

He said they should honourably resign from their seats as members of the House of Representatives, having moved to another political party while their tenure had yet to expire.

“Having perused the arguments of counsel and the constitutional provisions, it is clear and unambiguous that the defendants were sponsored by the PDP and won the election on its platform.

“It is also the court’s opinion that their tenure has not expired and there is no division in the PDP.

“The defendants are, therefore, not competent to vote or contribute to any proceedings in the House of Representatives.

“An order of perpetual injunction is, hereby, ordered, restraining them from altering or attempting to change the leadership of the House of Reps,’’ Ademola said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the PDP had on January 7 instituted a suit seeking to restrain the House of Representatives from altering the composition of its leadership.

The party had commenced the action following the defection of 37 legislators, who won elections on its platform, to the opposition APC.

Mr. Yunus Usman (SAN), PDP’s counsel, had, while arguing the originating summons, faulted the cross-carpeting of the lawmakers, saying that the legislators did so during the dependency of a judgment.

He argued that by virtue of the October 2013 judgment of Justice Evoh Chukwu, which said there was no division in PDP, the matter had been laid to rest.

Usman further submitted that by virtue of the provision of Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Nigerian constitution, as amended, the lawmakers ought to have vacated their seats immediately.

Mr. Mahmoud Magaji (SAN), counsel to the defendants, had in his submission, argued that it was wrong for the PDP to have sought to restrain its former members from activities of the assembly for defecting.

Other defence counsel, Mr Niyi Akintola, SAN, Mr Sebastian Hon, SAN, Mr James Ocholi,SAN, Mr Abiodun Owonikoko, SAN, and Jibril Okutepa, SAN, had prayed the court to dismiss the suit.

The Supervising Minister Of Education, Barr Nyesom Wike, Has Not Resigned His Position - PDP

By Ehi Ekhator

The Rivers State Chapter of the People Democratic Party (PDP), has debunked the publication in some quarters of the media alleging that the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, has resigned his position.

APC vs PDP APC vs PDP

This was contained in a statement sent to Naija Center News (NCN), signed by the Special adviser on Media to State PDP Chairman, Mr. Jerry Needam.

The party said that the Honorable Minister has not resigned his membership of the Federal Executive Council and has not at the moment contemplated doing so.

The statement continued “ The PDP therefore calls on its members and the general public to discountenance this concocted, false, misleading and calumnious speculation, which we are aware, is a creation by mischief makers and enemies of the Honourable Minister and the Party.

PDP also accuses All Progressives Congress, (APC) of employing such strategy to upset the general public against the PDP in the State and Nigeria at large.

It said “ The PDP also warns its teeming members and the general public to be deceived by falsehood emanating from political opponents, particularly, the All Progressives Congress, APC but to be steadfast and more committed to the struggle of liberating the people and the State from neo-colonialism and bad governance by the APC folks.

“The PDP says it is aware that this conjecture of falsehood is part of the many strategies employed by the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the opposition in their efforts to provoke public umbrage against the genuine programmes and activities of the majority Party (the PDP) in the State and the nation.

“The Party however says it has put in place modalities to check and thwart every of such ill-conceived plan against its successes by the opposition parties, particularly, the APC.

Arrest me if i beat the red light - Oshiomhole charges traffic agency

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has charged the men of the State Traffic Management Agency (ESTMA) to stop and arrest him or the State Deputy Governor if their vehicles beat the red light rule, saying no one is too big to contravene laws in the state.

Oshiomhole Oshiomhole

Speaking during a meeting with officers and men of the Agency at the Government House, weekend, Oshiomhole charged men of the agency to be firm but civil in carrying out their duties, saying they must not treat ‘big men’ with levity because of their status in the society.

He said: “you must not extort, you must not criminalise innocent people, you must not let offenders go after extortion, if anybody beats the red light, you must arrest the person no matter his status. If it’s the Governor or Deputy Governor, you must block him and interrogate him. The only person exempted from the red light rule is the President or Vice President when they visit, in which case the road will be blocked for their easy passage.

“So if you can stop and interrogate the Governor for beating the red light rule, no other person is bigger in the state whom you can’t stop. Anybody that contravenes the red light rule, stop him and detain him for at least two hours. Very many innocent people have been crushed because someone wanted to contravene the red light rule. This must stop”, the Governor said.

“I speak the minds of Edo people when I say very many people have been victims of your very crude and harsh traffic management methods.

“When you misbehave as some of you do, people in anger dismiss you as Oshiomhole police. I have no police. In fact, I am one of the very few who have spoken out against state police. I am commended for so many things but not so many people have commended me for this particular intervention, even as you have come into existence to help control traffic”, he said.

“I have to remind you that you are agents of a civil authority so your language must be civil. You are agents of a civilian government. You are not agents of a military government. Your language should not be “with immediate effect”. Your language must be consistent with the language that is acceptable in a democracy.

“You can be firm and yet be smiling. You need to be reminded that we are to provide services. In dealing with our masters, we must mind our language; you must be civil but firm. Laws must be obeyed; not laws in the hearts of rulers, but laws in the statute books.

“You must not under any circumstances arrest someone who has committed no offense. Let me remind you that you are not primarily a revenue generating agency. That is not the primary purpose for setting up the agency. When people breach the law, there are prescribed penalties”, he added.

The Governor however frowned that some men of the agency are often absent at their beats to maintain free traffic flow, saying “as I drive round the city, I still find out many of you are not working but get paid. We are devising a new method to ensure everybody earns his pay. We are going to put in place plain-clothed people to monitor you and as soon as you are caught extorting the public or contravening the laws, we prosecute you and you spend at least one month in prison, we are tired of your work giving our government a bad name”, he said.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Transport, Mr Orobosa Omo-Ojo had told the Governor that men of the traffic agency have come under attacks from some people who feel they are bigger than the laws of the state. He thanked the Governor for always standing by the agency in the discharge of its duties.

Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike resigns.

By Ehi Ekhator

Speculation from a section of the media revealed that the Supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike has tendered his resignation to President Goodluck Jonathan.

Wike Wike

According to the publication, quoting a source, Wike’s resignation is as a result of his governorship ambition in Rivers State. It was said that the resignation will take effect from April 1, 2014.

The President for some personal reasons, has refused to accept the resignation, but another source revealed that Wike’s resignation will be announced next week during the Federal Executive Council Meeting.

Responding to the speculation, Wike’s spokesperson, Mr. Jerry Needam,  who spoke with Naija Center News (NCN) on phone debunked the publication, saying that it was a mere fabrication. He said “It’s not true, Wike has not resigned”

Further calls to Mr. Wike was not answered.

DSS Attack: 21 terrorists killed, two operatives injured - DSS

By Soni Daniel, Emma Ujah, Uduma Kalu, Kingsley Omonobi, Ben Agande & Peter Duru

ABUJA— The Department of State Service, DSS , confirmed, yesterday, that 21 Boko Haram suspects were killed in a shoot-out at its detention centre between its operatives and the sect members.

DSS said two of its operatives sustained serious injuries.

The detained terrorists reportedly over-powered the guards, shot several operatives and attempted to stage a daring escape from detention.

There were, however, different accounts on how the attempted jailbreak was carried out.

Meanwhile, Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, denied reports, yesterday, that President Goodluck Jonathan was whisked away during the attempted jailbreak and shootout.

How B’Haram overpowered DSS operative

According to a security source, one of the Boko Haram members told one of the DSS guards that he was pressed and needed to go to the toilet. The sect member’s request was obliged without being leg-chained. On getting to the toilet and finding the door locked, he applied force and uprooted the toilet seat unknown to the operative who was standing outside.

When the detainee knocked the door to indicate that he had finished, the DSS the operative opened the door, only to have his head smashed with the heavy toilet seat.

The operative was said to have collapsed. The sect member then collected the gun of the operative, went to the cell entrance and opened fire on the other operatives who were caught off-guard and set free many of his colleagues.

The source said it was the shooting at the DSS centre that alerted other operatives who mobilised to take on the sect members, leading to serious shoot-out between the terrorists and the operatives for over an hour before security was re-enforced and soldiers drafted to the scene.

Soldiers called in to stop the rampaging Boko Haram detainees, Sunday morning.

Soldiers called in to stop the rampaging Boko Haram detainees, Sunday morning.

Another account

Another account of the incident had it that trouble started around 6 a.m. during the normal handing and taking over of duties by DSS detainees’ handlers.

Vanguard learnt that the shoot-out erupted when some of the suspected terrorists attempted to free their members and leave the detention facility, which is by the precincts of the Presidential Villa.

A competent source said as soon as one handler opened the gate leading to the cell where the detainees were being kept, 10 suspected terrorists rushed out, snatched the handler’s rifle and used it to shoot at him.

Alerted by the attack, some DSS handlers were reported to have retreated so as not to be killed by the rampaging suspected terrorists. The source said after shooting the first handler, the 10 suspected terrorists began to escape into different locations within the massive security compound.

Alarmed by the effrontery of the suspected terrorists, the DSS quickly deployed its men to quell the uprising, resulting in heavy shooting that claimed the lives of some of the suspects.

Many DSS operatives and Boko Haram detainees were also injured in the ensuing  stampede.

The shot DSS operative, whose name could not be immediately ascertained, was immediately rushed to an undisclosed hospital. A source said the shot operative was in a critical condition but had not died.

DSS commences probe

It was learnt that the DSS, which is highly embarrassed by the incident, has begun investigation into why the detainees handler decided to go and open the cell gate alone without being accompanied by others, as is the standard practice.

According to the source, “the whole episode occurred between 6:30 am and 7am on Sunday during the normal hand-over and take-over of detainees.

“The standard rule is that you cannot go alone to open the gate leading to the detainees’ cell but as soon as the man opened the gate, he was attacked and he tried to run away and was shot. The shot operative has been taken to hospital.”

The uprising led to the deployment of soldiers to the DSS Headquarters and around the Presidential Villa.

Situation under control —DSS

Spokeswoman for the DSS, Marylyn Ogar, confirmed the attempted jailbreak which she said had been stalled by security agents.

She said: “What happened was that the suspects’ handler went to feed the detainees but suddenly they attacked him with their handcuffs, disarmed him and started shooting.”

Soldiers taking on rampaging Boko Haram suspects

Soldiers flushing out the detainees

They are convicted terrorists

It was also gathered that the detained Boko Haram men, who confronted operatives of the DSS in a bid to free themselves, were prisoners already convicted for terrorism.

A security source said the prisoners were taken to the DSS headquarters for security reasons.

The source, who declined to be quoted because he had not been authorised to speak on the matter, said the DSS opted to keep the condemned terrorists in its facilities to prevent them from escaping from normal prison custody.

2 DSS operatives injured

Another statement issued by the spokesperson of the organisation, Mrs. Marilyn Ogar, said two operatives of the service who sustained serious injuries have been hospitalised.

Her words: “Following our earlier releases, it has been established that 18 casualties were recorded, while two service personnel sustained serious injuries. Three other detainees who sustained gun shot injuries during the incident have also died.”

At press time, the entire road linking the DSS headquarters, Presidential Villa, Mambilla Barracks, Niger Barracks, Guards Brigade headquarters and Lungi Barracks, have been cordoned off while bomb disposal experts of the army, K9 Dogs and other security agencies have been deployed to the area to join in containing the situation.

Heavily armed counter terrorism training soldiers and K9 Dogs, accompanied by DSS personnel were said to have entered inside the DSS headquarters with a view to flushing out the sect members who continued to shoot at operatives and arresting those that were unarmed.

Increase in helicopter patrol

An increased security presence was put in place at all the gates leading to the presidential villa with more armed personnel drafted in.

One of the two gates into the villa was shut down with only the entrance from the federal secretariat through the Supreme Court left open.

Jonathan safe and well —Presidency

Speaking with Voice of America, VOA, yesterday, Abati who was reacting to eyewitness account suggesting that Jonathan was whisked away said: “It was an attempted jailbreak. Those arrested tried to make an attempt to escape, but the situation was immediately and effectively brought under control. We will want to reassure everyone that really there is no cause for alarm.

Some Nigerians expressed worry following the gunshots, since the DSS headquarters building is near the presidential villa.

According to Abati, “The president is safe and well, and there is no cause for alarm. There are some persons who are trying to put up negative information trying to suggest that the president was whisked away. The truth of the matter is that there was no attack on the Presidential Villa.”

FG determined to end security challenges — Jonathan

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan, weekend, assured that the Federal Government had taken adequate measures to arrest the security challenges facing the country.

The President,  who was represented by the Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, also acknowledged the incessant bloody conflict between Benue farmers and suspected Fulani herders, assured that the crisis will soon come to an end.

Competency test: NBA attacks Edo State Government

Edo State Government has been lashed by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for the competency test conducted for the primary and secondary school teachers in the state by disregarding the injunction of the National industrial Court in Abuja, restraining the government from conducting the test as there was teachers suit before the court.

Oshiomhole and teacher Oshiomhole

This was contained in a statement by the NBA Benin branch Chairman, Mr. O. Akere. He said “We wish to remind the Edo State Government that the strict observance of the rule of law as a fundamental pillar of democracy and adherence to due process are some of the indices by which a responsible government is assessed. The colossal failure of the said competency test is a demonstration of the fact that a determined legitimate resolve of a people cannot be defeated even with the barrel of a gun.”

He commended the teachers who refused to write the competency test and said  “we are also in receipt of information that there is a clandestine move by the Edo State Government to remove from payroll, names of workers whose years of service were legitimately extended as a result of study leave without pay.”

NBA advised the state government to desist from challenging the sensibility of the people, disobeying the rule of law and advise that government to stop the unlawful and disgraceful step.

Reminding the government of one of its responsibility, he said that the government should do things to boost the workers’ welfare and not things to undermine it,  as the decision to extend the services of workers who went on study leave without pay was a decision of the Federal Executive Council in 2006, which was subsequently adopted by the Edo State Executive Council.

“Even if the Edo State Executive Council decides to reverse its decision on the issue, such reversal should not be retro-active,” it said.

Policeman kills baby, batters wife in Edo

BENIN— A Policeman (names witheld), allegedly killed his 19-month-old baby after battering his wife in Benin, weekend.

Drunk policemanThe incident was said to have occurred at a flat in Sam Enobakhare Crescent, off St. Saviour Road, Benin.

His wife said last Tuesday they were at home when her husband’s countenance suddenly changed and when she tried to find out why, he pounced on her.

Contacted, Dr. Jolly Nosakhare Iguma, the Chief Medical Director of Jonos Medical Clinic where the baby was taken to, said a mother and her daughter brought in a dead baby a few days ago.

He said: “On close examination the baby was pale, yellowish, with tooth bite injuries on his face.

“Since the baby is not old enough to fight with any person, I wondered who bit the baby. However, if he was brought in early enough, the baby would have been transfused with blood. He may have died of jaundice.”

When newsmen visited the residence weekend, it was deserted as neighbors claimed not to have seen any of its occupants in the past few days.

Contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Foluso Adebanjo said he is yet to be briefed, but promised to comment on the issue later.

don’t sell refineries - NLC tells BPE

Labour is disturbed that the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) intends to sell the four troubled refineries.

The refineries are two in Port Harcourt, one in Warri and the other in Kaduna. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said, it would oppose the plan.

There is also the proposal to commercialise certain federal institutions.

In a statement, NLC President Abdulwaheed Omar said: “It is scandalous that the same government which has always promised to use the gains from petroleum price increases, which it has received over the years, to reactivate existing refineries and build additional ones can turn around to announce the privatisation of refineries. This is clearly unacceptable, and the public have strongly opposed this attempt several times in the past, even on the floor of the National Assembly.”

Omar added: “ We are disturbed by the statement by the Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, BPE, Mr. Benjamin Dikki, who was reported to have announced that plans have been concluded by the BPE to privatise refineries as well as commercialise the Nigerian Television Authority, the Federal Radio Corporation, the News Agency of Nigeria, Nigeria Films Corporation, Skypower Catering and Hotels Services and the Commodities and Exchange Commission as well as the partial privatisation of Bank of Agriculture and the Bank of Industries. He also announced the commercialization of National Parks.”

Governor Lamido lashes Jonathan over missing $20b, National Conference

Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido lashed out at the Jonathan administration for what he called its failure to address Nigeria’s ills.

Governor Sule Lamido Governor Sule Lamido

He described the leadership as “totally disconnected with the people”, saying “all its policies are formulated in parallel with the needs, plight and interest of the common man and the country.”

Lamido also condemned the National Conference, the government approach to the Boko Haram killings and abandonment of projects in his state, among others.

He spoke in Dutse, the state capital, at the weekend while receiving a delegation of the Bank of Agriculture. It was led by Managing Director Dr. Falalu Santuraki.

The delegation, which praised Lamido’s support for agriculture, proposed a N1billion minimal interest loan to support irrigation for farmers at the Hadejia Valley, with minimal interest.

Lamido lamented that the Auyo irrigation scheme was abandoned for over 30 years by the Federal Government. He expressed regret that the promises made by President Jonathan to release N10 billion for the project and the reassurance by Vice President Namadi Sambo when he visited three years ago had not been fulfilled.

He also said the dualisation of Kano-Maiduguri federal road, which was started more than eight years ago, remained uncompleted. He described this as a manifestation of lack of seriousness from the leaders.

Lamido accused the President of gathering elders and respectable nationals to be embarrassing themselves in the name of national conference.

He said: “Some comments and statements from some delegates to the conference is disappointing and a threat to the unity of the nation.”

“It is unfortunate that our last line of hope, which comprises the emirs, clerics and elder statesmen, has been assembled somewhere and are busy insulting one another in the name of national conference. Believe me, if the situation continues, our nation’s unity is in danger,” he said.

The governor added: “If the PDP or APC members of the House of Assembly abuse one another, it is understandable because it is democracy for one party to challenge another.”

Lamido noted also that the administration is full of deceit and lackadaisical attitude to people’s needs and interests. “It is quite unfortunate that today in Nigeria, hundreds of innocent people are killed, like chicken on a daily basis for no just reason and nobody cared to talk about it.”

His words: “It is only in Nigeria that $20billion would be declared missing from the public treasury, but no one cared to talk about it because leaders can dare any huge consequences in bargaining and securing their political interests.

“The leadership in this country is totally disconnected from the people. All its policies are formulated in parallel with the needs, plight and interest of the common man and the country”.

“The masses are today living in agony due to high level of injustice, denial, imposition, abuse of office ensured by the tyranny of bad leadership.”

Abdusalami Abubakar: ‘What’s happening in Nigeria now is mindboggling’

It is easier for the camel to pass through the eyes of a needle than to get an interview with former Head of State of, General Abdusalami Alhaji Abubakar (GCFR).

Abdusalami Abubakar Abdusalami Abubakar

The amiable general earned his place in history after successfully handing over power to an elected civilian government in 1999 bringing a 19-year period of military rule to an end and ushering in the current democratic dispensation.

Aside occasional flash interviews, you can hardly get the general to comment on burning national issues or his life away from the public sphere. But on the eve of the commissioning of an ultra-modern general hospital built in his honour by the administration of Governor Mu’azuBabangida Aliyu of Niger State, the general, fondly called Triple A by friends, welcomed MORAKINYO ABODUNRIN, ASSISTANT EDITOR, to his hilltop home in Minna.

The home of the Abubakars, contrary to some stories, is modest, considering their status as the country’s former First Family. Though this was an evening reengagement, the lightning effects brought out the beauty of the decor in the living room with everything perfectly put in place.

But it is the composure and the overall disposition of the general that made a huge impression as he discussed freely (off record) with his other guests.

Even though the general was in a lively mood, he shied away from answering some questions because, as he said, ‘we have passed through all that and there is no need in going for a fishing expedition.’ Yet, he is as worried as any Nigerian about the insecurity in almost all partsof the country. He also spoke about how destiny played a key role in him becoming Headof State following the death of General Sanni Abacha in 1998. Excerpts.

One dies as police, OPC clash in Lagos

Members of the Oodua People’s Congress and policemen clashed at the Tolu Police Division, Ajegunle, Lagos State on Saturday evening.

Police block INEC Entrance Police block INEC Entrance

One member of the OPC, identified as Dauda Apampa, lost his life, while a police corporal, identified simply as Emeka, sustained gunshot in the incident.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the fracas was caused by a disagreement over the release of an unidentified man from OPC’s custody.

It was learnt that prior to the fracas, the man at the centre of the disagreement had been arrested by OPC men on Friday for allegedly raping an 18-year-old girl.

The OPC Lagos State Governor, Wasiu Afolabi, told our correspondent on the telephone that after his men had arrested the alleged rapist, policemen forcefully released him from their custody.

He said, “A young lady, who sells amala, reported that she was raped by one guy and we arrested him. The guy’s mother ran down to the police station and policemen came shooting and released the guy from our custody.

“The following day, which was Saturday, three OPC men went to have a discussion with policemen at the station in a bid to settle the misunderstanding, but in the process, things went out of hand and Apampa was shot and killed.

“After the killing, I had a chat with the policemen at the station and they claimed that my men were the first to attack and that they (police) shot in self-defence. They said a corporal was also shot in the fracas.

“But when I went to the hospital to see the so-called officer, I discovered that the police were only trying to cover up their crime because the policeman in question only had a minor injury.”

The OPC boss urged the government to look into the excesses of policemen, especially those attached to Tolu Police Station, as they had become notorious for such.

“I have told my boys not to retaliate. OPC men are gallant and if they decide to retaliate, there will be too much blood,” he said.

A police source at the station, however, said they went to effect the release of the alleged rapist because they learnt that OPC men were torturing him.

The source said they were trying to avoid a repeat of the Ejigbo torture which led to the death of a woman last year.

He said, “The case was not rape. An 18-year-old mother and a man had sex on the promise that the man would pay her N7, 000. After sex, the man refused to pay. Two days later, the lady approached the guy and told him to pay up, but the guy beat her up and chased her away.

“The lady then reported the matter to OPC men and they marched down to arrest the man. They took the man to a location and tortured him for many hours. When policemen got wind of the situation, they stormed the place on Friday and rescued the man.

“The man was then taken to the station where he was given necessary documents to take to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the 18-year-old lady came to the station to write a statement.”

The police source stated that a day after the man was rescued, the disgruntled OPC men, wielding guns and charms, stormed the station and threatened to burn it down.

The police source said, “They came to our station and started shooting. They said the police had no right to seize a suspect from their custody.

“The OPC guys were feeling invincible because they had put on charms for metaphysical protection and they started shooting. They shot a corporal, Emeka, and when we saw that we had no choice, we fired back.

“In the process, one of the OPC boys was also shot. He died, but his corpse has been taken away by his colleagues.”

Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone, said investigations into the shooting had commenced.

Braide said the policeman, who fired the killer shot, had been arrested to allow for objective investigation.

She said, “The policemen said they were under attack and shot in self-defence. However, the policeman who fired the killer shot has been arrested. Also, the corporal, who was shot by the OPC men is recuperating at a hospital.

“Normalcy has since returned to the area and security has been beefed up to prevent a recurrence at the station.”

Meanwhile, our correspondent learnt that the slain 45-year-old OPC man had been buried.

2000 Boko Haram killed, 20 soldiers missing in Sambisa forest

No fewer than an estimated 2,000 insurgents were killed in a combined operation by Special Forces and the men of the Air Force on Friday and Saturday in the volatile Sambisa Forest of Borno State, which has become a prominent hideout of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

Nigerian army, Gunmen, Boko Haram terroristsWhat would have been a great victory for the Special Forces was, however, marred by an operational misunderstanding between the ground troops and the officers in the Air Force Alpha Jet.

Investigations revealed that 20 soldiers are still missing as a result of the operational misunderstanding.

It was learnt that mid-way into the operation, the Air Force Alpha Jet radioed the ground forces who had advanced in three companies, that they should withdraw because it was running out of bombs.

It was learnt that while the second and the third battalions withdrew, the first company of soldiers did not get the critical operational order.

The situation was said to have put them at a numerical disadvantage in the encounter with the insurgents.

It was gathered that the soldiers fought their way through in desperation until they got to Bama Barracks.

Investigation revealed that a headcount among the soldiers revealed that  20 of them were missing.

The military would not declare a soldier dead unless the corpse is recovered.

It was further learnt that the soldiers became bitter because they felt they were not given the operational information that could have prevented the ugly occurrence.

Investigations further revealed that the angry soldiers became unruly and refused to take further orders from their superiors.

It was gathered that the soldiers, who came from 103 Battalion, Okuname under 81 Div Enugu, only take instructions from their commanding officer.

It was learnt that the commanders are still in the process of resolving the issue as of the time of filing this story.

However, the Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen Chris Olukolade, said the officers only went to their commanders to narrate their operational experience.

He said the issues had been resolved.

He confirmed that the Special Forces bombed the main operational headquarters of the insurgents where many of them were killed in droves.

Olukolade said, “There were operational issues; the issues have been resolved for the operation to commence.

The spokesman added that some of the soldiers that were said to be missing had returned to base.

“The troops only came to narrate their operational experience to the commanders for them to be resolved and they have been resolved; and the operation is already continuing,” He said

Nyako blasts Jonathan for blaming northern governors over Insecurity in the north

The governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, on Sunday said President Goodluck Jonathan, had once again demonstrated a lack of humility in his approach to issues.

Jonathan Might fire more ministersNyako was reacting to comments made by the President during the North-East rally of the Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday.

Jonathan had accused governors of the North-East for abdicating their responsibility of educating youths in their states. This, he said, was largely responsible for the Boko Haram menace.

In a response which was made public by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Mr. Ahmad Sajo, Nyako said it was unfortunate that the President has chosen once again, to blame everybody but himself, things going wrong with his government.

He said the decision of the President to shift blame to governors, is not a mark of good leadership.

He said, “We also wish to draw the attention of the President to the fact that over 800 classroom blocks were destroyed in Borno state.

“Over 2000 classroom blocks were destroyed in Yobe State including those belonging to the Federal Government. Recently some classrooms were destroyed in Adamawa State as well.

“Several Schools were damaged and closed down in the affected states including Federal Government Colleges even though the President said his government has no responsibility for Secondary Education.

“The President’s persistent refusal to visit the affected states could be interpreted to mean an abdication of his constitutional responsibility to cater for the welfare and safety of the people of the zone. If he could go to Bauchi on a political jamboree, why not visit Borno and Yobe as part of his constitutional responsibility?”

The governor said if there is any proof of bad governance, it will be located in the way and manner the President executes his priorities and the kind of statements he and his spokespersons make.

Governors, he said, are not and cannot be held responsible for security challenges since they have no control over security apparatus.

“The President is the Commander-in-Chief with powers over the Armed Forces, Police and other security agencies. On the issue of education, the President is either being mislead or is totally ignorant,” he said.

Nyako equally explained that, the name Boko Haram was coined by the Media in response to University graduates destroying their certificates in the very city of Bauchi where he made the latest statement. So it is not about University Education.

The Adamawa State governor also challenged President Jonathan to tell the world what his administration has done to improve Adamawa State since he assumed office.

He noted that his administration (re) constructed all the Federal Roads in our State, built the Nigerian Law School, built structures for the Army, Police and other security Agencies including the Prison Headquarters. These, he pointed out, are all responsibilities of the Federal Government.

He urged the President to check the records of Adamawa State at the Universal Basic Education Commission, since 2010 to see the level of commitment the Nyako administration has been to education.

The governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, however said he does not want to join issues with the President.

His Special Adviser on Media, Malam Isa Gusau explained that the President must have been misquoted because; he has a grasp of what the issues are.

He said, “If you will recall, the Minister of Special Duties who met some of the Boko Haram members, announced that he conferred with first class graduates among adherents of Boko Haram.

“There are many who dropped out of school to join the Boko Haram, there were graduates among them who tore their certificates.

“So, it is not about education per se. We believe that the President understands the issues and must have been misquoted in this case.”

President Jonathan had in his remarks at the North-East rally of the PDP in Bauchi on Saturday accused governors of the zone of failing to provide leadership for their people.

Jonathan said, “It is shameful for a governor who has stayed in power in his state for up to six years or more, to come to me and talk about bad leadership when you have youth in your state, more than half of whom have not attended primary school and you are doing nothing about it.

“State Governors should be ashamed of themselves when our children do not go to primary and secondary schools and they decide to carry arms.”

The Yobe State governor, Ibrahim Geidam, could not be reached for comments. Attempts to reach his Director of Press, Malam Abdullahi Bego were also unsuccessful as his mobile telephone number indicated that it was switched off. A text message sent to him returned undelivered.

APC pays newspaper columnists N5 million to discredit PDP officials - Olisa Metuh

By Ehi Ekhator

The leadership of the People Democratic Parties, (PDP) has said that the opposition party, All Progressives Congress (APC) is haunted by its own shadow.

APC vs PDP APC vs PDP

This was contained in a statement signed by the party National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh.

Mr. Metuh accused the APC of using the media to castigate, discredit and riducule PDP officials by using the resources meant for their state to pay for such negative columnists.

The party said that APC paid some newspaper columnists up to the amount of N5m to castigate and insult the party including the President.

The statement read “We have observed the ill-conceived and wicked offensive deployed by the APC wherein it has now resorted to attacking the personality of individuals and institutions of government using a section of the media.

“In the last few days, the media have been awash with paid write-ups and advertorials by the APC using resources meant for the development of their states to castigate, discredit and ridicule PDP officials and other well meaning individuals in the country.

“It is rather despicable that instead of coming out with tangible explanations that would delink it from the negatives for which Nigerians have rejected it, the APC, now haunted by its ugly shadow, has resorted to yet another diversionary tactics of propaganda, blackmail and falsehood, this time, using paid consultants masquerading as newspaper columnists to attack and insult individuals including the person of President Goodluck Jonathan.”

Mr. Metuh in the statement said that the APC’s agenda is to destroy the democracy and the peace and Unity enjoyed by Nigerians.

He said “We however wish to restate that the PDP is not perturbed by these attacks and they cannot deter us from exposing the APC. We completely stand by our position that the APC is a party of unpatriotic persons whose agenda is to destroy our democracy and the unity we enjoy as a nation.

“This wave of attack is clearly part of APC’s “Janjaweed” ideology of destruction and inciting the people against individuals, especially government officials, in furtherance of the plot to undermine the system and balkanize the nation along ethnic and religious lines ahead of the 2015 general elections; an agenda which has already failed.

“We are aware that the APC has engaged the services of foreigners who have since been imported into the country to do the hatchet job in collaboration with the paid consultants who pocket as much as N5 million naira for each negative publication.

“We are however aware of failed efforts by the APC to compromise credible Nigerian columnists and bloggers, who for the love of our dear country and fear of God refused to be made agents of destabilization.

“Nigerians must insist that the APC declares the source of the billions of naira with which it is sponsoring the negative publications. We must ensure that the funds are not coming from the resources meant for the development of their states where the people are already subjected to untold hardship on account of the looting and heavy taxes by the APC.

“As an ill-bred party, it is not surprising that the APC has continued to exhibit crass hatred for the President even to the extent of unleashing their thugs to attack innocent citizens for the singular reason of being in possession of posters of President Goodluck Jonathan.

“Nigerians are now aware that the APC is a party of hypocrites; of wolves in messianic robes seeking to deceive with the promise of change. We wish to state categorically that the APC as presently constituted has nothing to offer. It is not an alternative to the PDP neither is it an option to Nigerians. Its orchestrated mantra of change remains cosmetic, hypocritical and hollow, unless we now speak of change from democracy to dictatorship.

“By every indication, the APC is a rudderless ship heading for crisis and self destruction. We want Nigerians to note that whilst the leaders of the APC have continued to focus on attacking people and causing confusion, the PDP has focused on sensitizing the people as well as strengthening and expanding its support base.

“Whilst the APC leaders have relegated their duty of organizing their party ahead of elections and remain fixated on mischief, PDP leaders are working hard to organize our members in all the states, local government and wards of the country for a successful outing in 2015.

“Nigerians must note that as we match towards the general elections, the APC has no single democratic structure on the ground. It still lacks genuine followership and has no defined presence at the grassroot. On the other hand, the PDP remains the party with the largest number of members and supporters and shall continue to be committed to the national interest for the good of all.

“We wish to remind the APC that he who fails to work, works to fail. This is the ultimate fate that awaits them in 2015 and they should have nobody but themselves to blame. Of course, as bad losers, the only plan the APC has perfected is to incite the people and unleash mayhem in furtherance of its greater plot to truncate our democracy by reenacting the ugly experience of December 1983. This agenda has also failed as Nigerians are no longer in the dark regarding who the true enemies of our dear country are.

Too many old delegates may hinder progress of national conference - Lawmaker

A lawmaker, Dr Rafiu Ibrahim, says the presence of “too many old people’’ at the National Conference may be a negation of President Goodluck Jonathan’s good intention of convening it.

National conference National conference

Ibrahim who said this in Ilorin on Sunday told newsmen the ongoing National Conference was a laudable event which has too many old people as delegates.

The lawmaker who was inaugurated as Honorary President of Mess Committee of the Nigeria Navy School of Health Sciences in Offa, Kwara said the timeliness of the conference was apt.

The member of the House of Representatives said: “the preponderance of the old generation may negate the conference’s outcome.

“My major reservation is that the confab is skewed to the old age. They are too many. Spent forces cannot decide on how our tomorrow will be.

“That’s the only problem with it. I’m not against the intention. That (the intention) would be judged by the outcome.

“Now, we have so many old people at the confab. But, I hope that they will allow the young ones there to say something concrete,’’ he said.

Ibrahim, who represents Ifelodun/Offa/Oyun Federal Constituency, urged the Federal Government to correct the anomaly in order to tackle the country’s multifaceted problems.

He pointed out that inadequate representation and leadership inequality had been partly responsible for the under-development being experienced in all spheres of the nation’s life.

The lawmaker, who is a member of the House Committees on Navy and Appropriation, said he was determined to initiate programmes which would improve the lot of the people.

He then called for more support from the people to enable him achieve his lofty dreams.(NAN (0)

Buba Marwa dumps APC for PDP in Adamawa

Yola – Former Military Governor of Lagos State  and a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa,  retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, has formally defected to People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with his teeming supporters.

PDP PDP

The decision by Marwa to defect to PDP followed a meeting held on Sunday with his supporters in Yola after their  complaint of  being marginalised in the  APC.

In his speech, Marwa accused APC’s  national leadership of handing over the party in the state to Gov Murtala Nyako.

Marwa, who contested the last state governorship election with Nyako under defunct CPC, said his supporters were marginalised during the recent APC membership registration in the state.

He noted that as members of the legacy parties that formed APC he would not accept a situation where Nyako, who came from PDP, would just take over the party from “the original founders in the state”.

Marwa said he would dialogue  with the PDP so as to ensure their fair share in the party.

Others, who spoke at the meeting shortly before the voice vote, insisted that they should leave for PDP  their original party.

Marwa left PDP for defunct CPC in 2011 after the conduct of the  PDP governorship primaries which nominated  Gov. Murtala  Nyako to run for second term. (NAN)

PDP approached us millions to dump APC - NIPF

Ehi Ekhator

The Non-Indigenes Political Forum (NIPF) of the Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State to desist from luring its members.

NIPF Coordinator, Chief Uchenna Okokoba, issued the warning yesterday during a meeting of the Forum held at the State APC Secretariat in Port Harcourt.

He said that the warning had become necessary following reports reaching him that PDP leaders in the State had been making overtures to NIPF members with a view to luring them away from the ruling APC.

APC vs PDP APC vs PDP

“The PDP leadership in Rivers State has approached some of us, requesting us to dump our great party and switch camp to them, assuring us that we will be paid in millions of Naira if we switch camp. What they forget is that we are not in this project for money but to ensure that Rivers State is blessed with good leadership under an APC government. We are committed and ready to ensure that our goals, vision and mission for Rivers State are actualised no matter the odds,” Chief Okokoba said in his welcome address.

He disclosed that based on their rejection of the overtures from the PDP leadership, the party in its desperate efforts to make a presence in the State has contacted one Dr. Peter Okoye residing in Nnewi in Anambra State to help it establish a sister body of non-indigenes in Rivers State to be named “PDP Rivers State Non-Indigenes Movement”. “We wonder why a fellow who is not residing in Rivers State should be contacted to form a political body in the State. We have instructed our people not to have anything to do with such a body when finally formed,” Okokoba stated.

The NIPF Coordinator, Chief Okokoba presented the final report from the 21 Local Government Areas of Rivers State, indicating that 148,497 non-indigenes registered with APC at the end of the recent registration of new members of APC in the state. This new figure, he noted, is far above the 100,000 registrants contained in the group’s preliminary report. Giving a breakdown of the figures, Okokoba said that Port Harcourt registered the highest number of 15,156 non-indigenes; followed by Ikwerre, 10,931; Obio-Akpor, 10433; Etche, 10,112; Eleme, 9,915;, Etche, 7,280; while Asari-Toru Local Government came last with only 2,090. The results of other Local Government Areas are as follows – Abua/Odua, 3,520; Akuku Toru, 4,560; Ahoada East, 5,612; Ahoada West, 4,991; Andoni, 8,931; Bonny, 6173; Degema, 2,860; Emohua, 10,112; Gokana, 4,131; Khana, 8,921; Ogun/Bolo, 2,920; Okirika, 2,550; Omuma, 4,272; ONELGA, 6,832; Opobo/Nkoro, 5,168; Oyigbo, 6,860 and Tai, 4,390 making the grand total of 148, 497 non indigenes that have registered with our great party, APC. He said that more non-indigenes would have been registered if not for the violence introduced by the PDP leadership during the exercise. The full list of Local Government by Local Government registration of non indigenes in Rivers State during the just concluded registration exercise is attached for doubting ‘Thomases’ who were at a loss on how the non indigenes are indentifying with the aspiration and vision of APC in Rivers State in such a large and massive number.

NIPF Leader, Barr. Chuma Chinye, who is also the Rivers State Commissioner of Commerce and Industry, surprised the meeting by donating a brand new air-conditioned Coaster Bus to the group. Chinye, said he made the donation to make it easier for NIPF to mobilise non-indigenes in the state to contribute optimally towards making APC the leading political party in the State. Barr. Chinye declared that the Forum stands on a firm ground, assuring the members that the era of non-indigenes being excluded in the affairs of the State is gone for good “as we have done much in contributing to the development of Rivers State through payment of our taxes and participating in good governance of the state.”

He charged the NIPF leadership and members not to feel intimidated by the acts and antecedents of the PDP leadership in the State as they have nothing good to offer them and the state in general. “To us in Rivers State, PDP is history as Governor Amaechi departed with the soul of the party leaving a mere corpse of the party in the hands of some confused and misguided elements to handle”. He concluded by urging other well-to-do members of the Forum to assist in any way possible to put the Forum on a solid footing.

An elated NIPF Coordinator, Chief Uchenna Okokoba, commended Barr. Chinye for his avowed commitment towards the Forum, assuring him and the revolutionary Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi that NIPF would work hard to ensure that both non-indigenes and the entire Rivers State elect an APC Government come 2015.

Other leaders of the Forum present at the meeting were Chief Ade Adeogun, Chairman of Rivers State Sanitation Commission, Mr. David Iyofor, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Amaechi, and Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, Alh. Yusuf Tanko, NIPF Secretary, Chief Joseph Udoh, Leader, Akwa/Cross, Chief Solomon Nwnoye, NIPF Igbo Leader, Chief Joseph Ijede, Edo/Delta Leader, Alh. Ahmed Adisa, Youth Leader, Alh. Halliru Imam, Hausa Leader, Hausa Leader among others. (0)

It was said that a member of the Boko Haram attacked armed SSS, disarmed him and led to the shooting.

But one of the residence said that they didn’t know what was going on as heavy gunfire was coming from the direction of the villa. He disclosed that the entire area was barricaded and SSS operatives were scampering out of their headquarters as the gunshots get louder.

He also said that soldiers were  heading in the direction of the SSS headquarters with armoured Personnel Carriers and they were asked to stay in doors.

Responding to the issue, Spokesperson of the SS, Marilyn Ogar said the gunshots was as a result of an attempted jailbreak at the headquarter by a detained member of Boko Haram and promised to gather more information before speaking further.

Again Boko Haram attacks Borno village, kills 4

Violence erupted again in Borno state, as 30 gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists on motorcycles attacked Azir village in Damboa council area of the state, killing four residents with the injuring of seven others in the early hours of Saturday.

Boko haram attacks nafAzir village is a farming and herdsmen community, and 107 kilometres south of

Maiduguri, the state capital.

The gunmen, in the dawn attack, also torched several houses and shops with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and petrol bombs, before fleeing into the Sambisa Forest, east of the village.

According to source, a resident of Damboa yesterday in a telephone interview said the Boko Haram sect issued a threat letter to the village head early this month that the people should vacate their village, as the Islamist sect group will execute the work of Allah (God) in the night of undisclosed date.

“Two weeks after the threat letter, we were shocked and terrified by 30 gunmen on motorcycles; and surrounded the entire village, shooting sporadically at people fleeing, before setting most of the houses and huts ablaze. Some of the villagers had to flee into nearby farmlands for safety, while others climbed trees to hide, as the village was burning with plumes of smoke for two hours last night,” the source said while explaining how some villagers escaped from being killed yesterday night.

On casualties of attack, he said: “I cannot tell you the exact number of people killed, but definitely four of our people were shot dead, before their children and wives, while fleeing for safety that night along with other villagers to the bush and farmlands. Also seven villagers had broken limbs and fire burns; and they had been taken to an undisclosed hospital in Maiduguri for treatments.”

He added that the villagers were left without security from either the Military or police from Maiduguri, stating that before Saturday’s attack, the soldiers and policemen patrolling Maiduguri-Biu road; were however; withdrawn early this month.

This, he explained, enabled the gunmen to cash in on non-protection of the village against insurgency attacks and killings of yesterday.

The Borno police commissioner, Tanko Lawal confirmed the incident yesterday in Maiduguri, but said he is yet to get details on the number of casualties from the Divisional Police Officer ( DPO ) in Damboa, adding that as soon as he get details, the Police Public Relations Officer ( PPRO ) DSP Gideon Jubrin will call our Correspondent as at the time of going to press.

Gun fire exchange rocks presidential villa, SSS quaters

Heavy gunfire exchanges rocks the vicinity of Nigeria’s presidential palace and the headquarters of the Department of State Services in the Asokoro District of  Abuja as reported by Premium Times in the past one hour.

Human Right Watch Accused Boko HaramAccording to the reports, residents of the nearby Aso Drive Area said the gunshots were either coming out of the SSS headquarters or the presidential villa.

One of the resident said, “We don’t know what’s going on here. Heavy gunfire has been coming from the direction of the villa. The entire area has been barricaded. SSS operatives are scampering out of their headquarters as the gunshots get louder.

“Soldiers are now heading in the direction of the SSS headquarters with Armoured Personnel Carriers. Those of us living around here have been asked to stay indoors and not venture out.”

Reacting to the incidence, spokesperson of the SSS, Marilyn Ogar, said the gunshots were triggered by attempted jailbreak at the Service’s headquarters by suspected members of the extremist Boko Haram sect.

She said, “What happened was that the suspects’ handlers went to feed the detainees here but suddenly they attacked him with their handcuffs, disarmed him and started shooting.

“The military was quickly called in before they could do any harm and that is responsible for the shootings you heard.

“It was an attempted jailbreak but it has been brought under control.”

The true face of horror in Ibadan! Bow, knife expose herdsmen as suspects

Everybody who got to the ‘evil forest’ in Ibadan, Oyo State capital where hundreds of people have been killed by kidnappers was stunned to speechlessness seeing the number of decomposed bodies of victims.

Call the place the Soka house of horror, a den of killers, the place of skull, the evil shrine, the valley of dry bones, killers’ hideouts, you will not be wrong. No adjective or description is too much to express the horror there. In the isolated bush, life is hellish, brutish, loutish and nasty. It is distasteful, barbaric and fetish. It is better read and heard than seen.

SOKA-1If you go there once, you could find it difficult to have your meal. Flies of different sizes and colours were feasting on the bodies. The bodies were in different positions. The odour was unbearable. The land brings to mind David’s statement when he heard about the death of his bosom friend, Jonathan, “Tell it not in Gath or publish it in the streets of Ashkelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph”.

Chief Isiaka Bello Olupoju, a community leader in the area who was not sure of the exact number of people killed, put the figure at about 120 persons.

Apart from the atrocities committed in the den, the incident raises a serious security concern.

Alleged connivance

It is indefensible for residents in the area to claim ignorance of the activities of the kidnappers. The stench oozing from the decomposed bodies was a strong indication that nobody in the area could claim ignorance.

A woman, who spoke in the presence of Governor Abiola Ajimobi, said the matter had been reported at Sanyo Police Station several times. She said some policemen either said the place had been set aside to take care of the destitute who had become a nuisance in the city or it didn’t fall under their jurisdiction.

Another source said they always saw some people moving up and down particularly herdsmen. He said the police should investigate the herdsmen. To fuel suspicion that the herdsmen might know something about the  killings there, a knife and a bow commonly used by cattle rearers were found close to one of the decomposed bodies. The knife was still looking fresh as at Tuesday indicating it was just dropped there.

Besides, a company populated by foreigners where the vehicles or motorcycles conveying the victims always pass should know something about the isolated bush. The building of the company is tall and so should afford the persons staying inside to have a glimpse of what is going on in the bush.

Arbitrary arrests and shooting

Sunday Vanguard saw the body of a woman identified simply as Kafayat, pregnant and said to be a mother of three, who was allegedly killed by an overzealous security man during the protest that followed the uncovering of the bush. She was said to have left her wares at Agodi Gate where she operated a shop to have a glimpse of the horror when she was felled by stray bullet.

Apart from seven suspects earlier arrested as confirmed by the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olabisi Ilobanafor, three other suspects were rounded up in the area.  Sunday Vanguard gathered from a security man that a mob made up of youths, angered that the police failed to uncover the bush of horror, was coming to set the Sanyo Police Station ablaze.

This prompted policemen to guard the station. Anybody coming from the Lagos end of the expressway towards Iwo Road without an Identity card was picked up as a suspect. An Okada man, who proved difficult for two policemen trying to pin him down, was beaten blue and black as about eight policemen descended on him with gun butts and boots.

He was thereafter arrested. Before Ajimobi got to the scene, it was gathered that five more bodies had been taken away and also a boy who was trying to dig the hall to locate some of his missing relatives was reportedly shot by security men guarding the place. When arraigned in court one day after, the court could not find any cogent reason why the suspects should be remanded in custody. They were released on bail in the sum of N100, 000 each.

How the den was discovered

After several failed attempts to find their missing ones, commercial motorcyclists, popularly called Okada riders, mobilized in hundreds and stormed the kidnappers’ den. On getting there, they raised the alarm seeing numerous bodies of victims.

Ajimobi revokes right to land

When Governor Ajimobi got to the scene, the crowd was unruly. He had to talk tough to get the people to listen to him. He said, “As from today, the state government has revoked the land from its owners. We would dig all the land and expose any victims hidden in the ground. God would expose them. We, into whose hands you have entrusted the governance of this state through your votes, God will use us to punish the culprits”.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Indabawa, assured the crowd that he would do everything to get all the suspects.

Survivors in hospital

Doctors at Adeoyo State Hospital, Ibadan, where victims who survived the ‘evil forest’ horror were admitted for treatment, did not allow journalists’ access to the survivors. After much pressure, the hospital officials and security men there, however, allowed some newsmen to have a brief chat with the survivors but they did not allow anybody to take pictures.

The survivors, who identified themselves as Nafiu Shittu, Michael Ola, Mrs. Titi Adeniyi, nee Dokpesi and Wale Atoyebi, gave indications that the kidnappers, who operated in the bush, capitalized on the urban renewal initiative of the Oyo government to arrest some hawkers under the pretext that they violated the state environmental law even though they did not have the authority of government to do it. Shittu recalled how he was kidnapped. He said he was selling concoction at Agodi Gate when he was accosted by some men who forced him into a waiting car.

Titi Adeniyi-nee Dokpesi said she was forced into a vehicle in front of her house and later found herself in the den.

She said, “I am from the compound of the late Baba Awolowo located in Oke Bola area of Ibadan. Some people kidnapped me while I was sitting in front of our house. Nobody was around then. My people were in Lagos. They said I was wanted somewhere and that they came to arrest me. They then took me away in their vehicle. Later, I found myself in that forest”. The survivor said she could not tell if people were being killed in the forest by the kidnappers.  ”I don’t know whether people were being killed or women giving birth. Where they kept us was where I used to be. Once I covered my head with my dress, I would sleep off”.

As if that was not enough, three human tongues were allegedly found on three men at Oni and Sons Hospital area of Ibadan in a cellophane bag. After being mobbed, the men were handed over to the police.

Armed soldiers raid Al-Mustapha’s residence

Armed men, believed to be soldiers, Friday evening, raided one of the residences of Major Hamza Al Mustapha (rtd), former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha,  located at Durbin Katsina, Kano metropolis, leaving in its wake sordid tales of rights violation and molestation.

Al-Mustapha Challenges Obasanjo to a public debate Al Mustapha leaving Kirikiri

The heavily armed men, who reportedly came in trucks and  tanks,  allegedly cordoned  several streets leading to the house and seized the occupants who were mostly women and children in an operation that lasted 60 minutes.

Al-Mustapha’s younger brother, identified as Hadi, is also said to be a resident of the house.

Eyewitnesss said the ‘soldiers’ came in trucks and tanks and, immediately they gained entrance into the building, ordered everyone around to lie face flat on ground and, at gunpoint, conducted a thorough search of the building.

“One Abubakar, reportedly  a cousin to Major Al-Mustapha, was maltreated by the troops. He is recuperating at a private hospital, a  witness  recounted.

The eyewitness revealed that  the wife of Hadi, Al Mustapha’s  brother, was  forced, at gunpoint, to conduct the armed men round the expansive building, adding that “the traumatized housewife was immediately taken to a hospital shortly after they left”.

Another source stated: “The invading forces were not friendly, not even the children were spared as the house  was ransacked inside out all in the name of searching for an imaginary cache of arms”.

The source added, “The same treatment was meted to those outside. I heard their leader, a colonel, during a telephone conversation, telling the person at the other end that they had  not found anything incriminating  and  that it seemed  the information (they had) was not accurate”.

Speaking on the development, Hadi disclosed that the family was evaluating the damages done by the men, stressing: “We intend to come up with details of what happened and the action to follow in due course.”

The outgoing military spokesman in Kano State, Captain Ikediche Iweha, while reacting to the story, declared: “ Haba, we don’t  invade houses. If  the story you are telling is correct, then it must be the usual routine checks.

“In any case, give me time to verify the matter and get back to you”.

As at press time the spokesman did not call back. He is on transfer to 3rd Armoured Brigade, Jos.

Islamic Cleric Caught While Beheading a Woman in His Room in Ibadan

BUT for providence, another ritual target would have been killed in Ibadan at the weekend by an Islamic cleric (Alfa).

KnifeChiwendu Nkwocha  was already pinned to the ground  by  the suspect, Isa Salaudeen, in his room  at Ori Eru in Ibadan, with the knife slicing through her neck when, with the last strength in her, she  screamed for help  at the top of her voice.

Residents in the neighbourhood rushed to the scene with one of them kicking the door open. When Salaudeen looked up, he saw a crowd.

He dropped the knife and made to flee. He did not go far before he was caught and given the beating of his life. Some in the crowd even wanted him lynched on the spot.

A resident of the area told The Nation that the suspect had told his victim, Nkwocha, that she needed to be exorcised of some evil spirits troubling her.

The ‘ritual ‘would be performed by the Alfa with Nkwocha all alone with him in the room, the source said. She agreed and the Alfa commenced the ‘ritual’ by pinning her to the ground and putting the knife to her neck.

However, the knife appeared not to be sharp enough and forced the Alfa to reach for another knife.

That gave the victim an opportunity to fight for her life by shouting for help.

The eyewitness said: “People heard the lady shout from inside the house and they kicked the door open only to find her pinned down by the Alfa who was already cutting her neck.

“But once the door was kicked open by those who responded to the woman’s shouts for help, the Alfa ran out of the house when the first person broke in.

“The woman’s neck was already cut. The head would have been totally cut off if help hadn’t come”.

Another resident of the area, Taiwo Agunlofi, said   angry youths gave the fleeing Alfa a chase and caught up with him in no time. They were in the process of lynching him when the police arrived the scene and intervened.

They arrested the suspect and dispersed the crowd that gathered to kill him. Nkwocha was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Other residents in the area also told The Nation that the victim was brought to Salaudeen by her boyfriend, who was still at large, for “spiritual cleansing”.

According to them, Salaudeen and the yet- to- be named boyfriend must have connived to use her for money rituals.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Olabisi Ilobanafor confirmed the incident and said that Salaudeen was in police custody while investigation continues.

Ilobanafor said it appeared that the suspect used different knives in attempting to slaughter  Nkwocha.According to her, the suspect has made useful statements to the police.

The Alfa’s room and parlour have been locked up. The incident came barely a week after the discovery of the Soka ‘Forest of Death’ in Ibadan suspected to be a den of ritualists.

Many decomposed bodies and human parts were found in the forest while about 18 kidnapped people were rescued alive from the bush. (0)

President Jonathan"s administration shameless - Tinubu

National leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on Saturday described President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration as shameless.

He added that rather than account for the alleged missing $20bn oil revenue, it kept giving untenable excuses.

Tinubu Bola Tinubu

Tinubu said, “They are so shameless that the number of years they have ruled does not matter to them. Don’t change the subject matter. Account for the missing money or go. All the explanations they gave about the missing money are just explanations. They steal from pensioners. We must kick them out.”

The APC leader who spoke at the sixth Bola Tinubu Colloquium in Lagos titled ‘The Summit of the Common man’, added that the electorate would not continue to vote for a government that refused to give them electricity.

“The change is for you to vote and defend it. We must break the shackles of poverty. How can we continue to vote for a government that refused to give us petrol and which removed subsidy on petroleum products. Are we sadistic? Do we enjoy being punished?” he stated.

Also, Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola urged the electorate to be mindful of those they elect.

He said, “ You must pay critical attention to the people you vote for.

I know that we have employed somebody for the top job in this country but when we asked him about his qualifications and experience, he said he had no shoes. You must decide whether you want someone who spends most of his time in church or mosque, or the man who is ready to spend his time on the job.”

Fashola also said Tinubu had solved problems, built an array of leaders and passed the torch to them.

Selected Nigerians across the country also shared their experiences ranging from unemployment, poverty, and injustice to audiences at event.

They included a farmer, Nasiru Daudawa, an unemployed graduate, Sopriye Victor and a fisherman, Eric Dooh.

In his remark, Chairman of the event, The Most Reverend, Ephraim

Ademowo, described the APC national leader as an uncommon man.

He said, “He is a consummate and tested politician. A master strategist and a libertarian par excellence. He is kind to a fault.”

Those who attended the event included APC interim Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, a former military Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), Chief Segun Osoba, Prof Pat Utomi, Governors of Ogun, Osun and Ekiti states, among many others.

Efforts to reach the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Goodluck Jonathan Dr. Reuben Abati, for his comments were futile on Saturday night. Calls made to his mobile number by our correspondent didn’t go through while a text message to the same number was not replied as at press time. (0)

Presidency will not probe Alison-Madueke on jet scandal

The Presidency, on Saturday, insisted it would not probe the Minister of Petroleum, Mrs. Dieziani Alison-Madueke, because it does not possess the necessary documents needed to do so.

The Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, who said this in a statement in Abuja on Saturday while reacting to the ongoing probe of the minister by the House of Representatives, also said the President had vowed not to condone any act of corruption from any quarters no matter how  highly placed.

He said, “We wish to reiterate emphatically that President Goodluck Jonathan had never and will never condone any act of corruption no matter which quarters such may come from.

“This clarification has become necessary as a result of a publication which suggested falsely that my response to the planned probe by the  House of Representatives on the hiring of a private jet by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation implied that the President was encouraging corruption.”

He added, “The true fact of the matter is that it is the House of Representatives that claimed to be in possession of certain documents relating to the leasing of private jets for which they decided to institute a probe.

“The Presidency is not in possession of such papers neither has any petition relating to such issue been received by the Presidency. Therefore, the Presidency is not in any position to investigate a matter that it has no fact or presentation on.

“It therefore becomes imperative that that the Presidency awaits the outcome of the on-going investigation by the House of Representatives before it can undertake any reasonable action.”

Okupe stated that in his determination to fight corruption in the country, the President endorsed and directed that an alleged non-remittance of about $10 billion into the national coffers by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation be subjected to a forensic audit by reputable international audit firms as suggested the minister of finance.

This he said, was a clear indication that President Goodluck Jonathan upholds integrity, openness and accountability in the affairs of government and will never tolerate a cover up of any act of corruption by any person or agency of government.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Secretary of the PDP, Major Raphael Towobola(retd.), has, in a petition sent to the National Chairman of the party, Adamu Mu’azu, stated the party may lose the Osun State governorship election.

In the petition dated March 28 and entitled, ‘Protest on my purported suspension as a state secretary of Osun State PDP and need to ensure the conduct of a proper and credible gubernatorial primary election in Osun State in order to secure electoral victory,’ Towobola said there were pointers that the party was going to field an unpopular candidate in the August governorship election.

He said he had earlier sent a petition to Mu’azu on February 27 on what was happening in the state chapter of the party,  but that he was astonished that he was suspended from office for a month by a clique of the party in Osun State because of the petition. (0)

Blame no one but governors for insecurity in the north, says Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday indicted some unnamed state governors in the north-eastern part of the country over the spate of insecurity in the zone that has left hundreds of people dead.

President Goodluck JonathanHe said the unnamed governors who turn around to attribute the violence to bad leadership failed in their responsibility of providing basic primary and secondary education for the children.

He said the uneducated children who form an army of unemployed and unemployable youths are now tools in the hands of miscreants who feed and arm them to kill innocent citizens.

Jonathan spoke at the Peoples Democratic Party’s North East Unity Rally held in Bauchi, Bauchi State.

He said while the Federal Government was doing its part by providing tertiary education to teeming Nigerian youths, state governments must also play their roles and stop pointing accusing fingers at him.

He said he played his role well to end insecurity in Bayelsa State when he was the deputy governor and the state governor, hence he expected state governors to play their roles too.

He added that north-eastern states had lost more people than any other part of the country in the violence orchestrated by the fundamental Islamic sect, Boko Haram because people refused to do the right thing.

Meanwhile, Jonathan  on Saturday also said the problems of youth restiveness and insecurity within the African continent might have been caused  by “external forces” working against the progress of the region.

Jonathan was not specific on what he meant by “external forces” but stated however, that the growth which the continent had recorded within the last few years might be a major reason for people who are envious of the region to cause instability.

He stated these in Abuja at the opening session of the Seventh joint annual meetings of the Economic Commission of Africa conference of African ministers of finance, planning and economic development and the African Union conference of ministers of economy and finance.

In a related development, the Katsina State Government said it had concluded arrangements to convene a special security meeting with neighbouring Zamfara on ways to fight crime and attacks on villages.

Gov. Ibrahim Shema said this at a meeting with his Zamfara counterpart, Gov. Abdulaziz Yari, at the Government House in Gusau.

He expressed concerns over increasing criminal activities, where large number of heavily armed hoodlums invaded villages, maimed and killed several community members. (0)
