Bauchi State: Former Governor, Isa Yuguda dumps PDP

The immediate past Governor of Bauchi State, Isa Yuguda, has left the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Mr. Yuguda, as member of the PDP, served as minister of aviation under former President Olusegun Obasanjo and also served as governor for two terms on the platform of the party.

He briefly left the party for the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party in the run-up to the 2007 general election after he was denied the governorship ticket of the party. But he soon returned to the PDP shortly after he was elected on the platform of the ANPP.

Mr. Yuguda, who spoke to journalists in Bauchi over the telephone on Saturday said he decided to leave the PDP because the party had lost focus and presently lacked the will to bring development to Nigeria.

The PDP governed Nigeria for an unbroken 16 years beginning May 29, 1999.

It lost power to the All Progressives Congress during the 2015 general election.

Mr. Yuguda did however not disclose the political party to which he is headed, saying he was still consulting his supporters.

“Already I have told my supporters that I will not force them to leave PDP. Anybody that wants to remain in PDP is free to do so and whoever wants to move with me is welcome.

“I decided to leave PDP because the party can no longer bring development to Nigeria, it’s unfortunate that the party has lost focus,” he said.

Mr. Yuguda also prayed for the success of President Muhammadu Buhari in the discharge of his duties as president.

“We must always pray for the success of our leaders because the Holy Quran admonishes people to pray for their leaders to succeed and that is why we should pray for the success of President Buhari’s administration,” he said.

As soon as Mr. Yuguda finished speaking to the journalists, some of his supporters trooped to the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Bauchi where they publicly tore their PDP membership cards.

Bauchi State Governor, Mallam Isa Yuguda, on Monday sacked over 2, 000 of his political aides but retained very few on essential services.

The sacking, which was contained in a statement by the Permanent Secretary, Political Affairs, Government House, Hashimu Yakubu, on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government, stated that the sacking of all Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants and Personal Assistants was with immediate effect.

Although, the number of aides sacked was not disclosed in the government statement, it was, however, learnt from a government source that they might well be over 2, 000.

The source said, “I don’t know how many of them were sacked but they can be more than 2, 000 because even shortly before the elections, the Governor was said to have appointed over 70 aides.”

The statement read, “The Executive Governor of Bauchi State, Mallam Isa Yuguda, has approved the  disengagement of all Special Advisers (with the exception of the Special Adviser, Due Process).

“Also, all Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants and Personal Assistants (with the exception of those who work directly under His Excellency the Executive Governor or the Deputy Governor).”

According to the statement, all those affected are requested to hand over government property in their possession (if any) to the heads of organisations where they served.

Yuguda therefore expressed his appreciation to the disengaged political aides for their contributions to the development of Bauchi State in their various capacities and wished them the best in their future endeavours

Bauchi: Soldiers killed my son while monitoring his vote – Father

A 78-year-old man in Bauchi State has narrated how a soldier shot and killed his 28-year-old son to monitor the collation of results after the presidential election in Bauchi State on Sunday.

Father of the deceased, Alhaji Yahaya Wunti, a bicycle repairer, said his son, Mohammed Bello, who is single, left the house at Wunti that morning for the Independent National Electoral Commission Headquarters in the state where results were being collated.

Wunti, who spoke to journalists in his house on Thursday, said, “Mohammed always asked for my permission before leaving the house. He came to me that fateful day at around 11am and informed me that he wanted to go to INEC and I asked him whether he was carrying any incriminating thing on him and he said, ‘no’.

“It was just about 10 minutes after he left that they brought his dead body that he was shot by a soldier.”

The bereaved father, who has beeen receiving sympathisers at his house, said he had yet to understand why the soldier should shoot his son in the head.

“He was a good boy, who did not like making trouble. He was a mason and was very hardworking but he was very passionate about Buhari. I know my son wouldn’t break the law because of his love for Buhari, so I wonder why the soldier chose to waste a promising young man like Mohammed,” he said.

The Bauchi South Senator-elect, Mallam Ali Wakili of the All Progressives Congress, who was among the sympatisers, expressed sadness over the loss.

Wakili, who defeated the incumbent Governor, Isa Yuguda, during the Senatorial election, said he reported the incidence to the Army and the trigger-happy soldier had been arrested.

He said the army had assured him that the matter would be looked into to the letter and ensured that justice was done over the brutal murder of the young man.

There are different unconfirmed reports of what led to the shooting of Mohammed by the soldier.

A version of the incident had it that Mohammed threw a stone at the soldiers, who had a hard time trying to control the multitude of Buhari supporters who thronged the INEC Headquaters at Ahmadu Bello Way in the state capital on Sunday, after the general election.

It was learnt that the soldier, reacting to the alleged stoning, shot Mohammed in the head.

Another account said Mohammed was in the crowd, not being of any threat, when the bullet hit him.

A friend, who accompanied Mohammed, while speaking in confidence, said the soldier actually aimed to kill Mohammed.

He claimed that he was standing with Mohammed at a place far removed from the area barricaded by the security operatives.

He said:” The State Campaign council had already setup a committee headed by Governor Isa Yuguda to find the missing funds and whoever is guilty of the dubious act of diverting the missing funds will face the disciplinary action by the Party”

” The money was released to the State campaign council in two batches, one N80 million and N150million .They were diverted by prominent persons in the party and we requested the Governor to investigate and find the missing funds”

On the feud and Political rivalry between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Mohammed and his former boss, Yuguda, Mai Auduga said they have already reconciled their differences which is in the best interest of the State and Country .

Mai’Auduga said the Minister had apologized to G Yuguda whom he described as his mentor, pointing out that it was Yuguda who made him who he is today.

He said the Minister had already collapsed all his campaigns structures in to the state campaign council and contributed a lot to the PDP campaign organisation for the success of all the PDP candidates.

Director General said President Good luck Jonathan’s visit to Bauchi last Monday had diminished fears that other political parties could defeat PDP in the North East region.

He said : “The visit is one of the President’s most successful trips to Bauchi State. The difference is now very clear and the question of opposition or or whatever existing sentiment has already diminished”

” I am very confident that we can deliver Bauchi to the president. The President visited the state and went home very happy with the development projects he commissioned like Airport and 400 bed Specialist Hospital”

Alhaji Bala said Jonathan was happy and confident that Bauchi people did not hate him and will vote for him.

He thanked President Jonathan for all his support, Prominent PDP Stake Holders, the Deputy Senate Leader Abdul Ahmed Ningi who used their wealth of experience and wisdom in reconciling the Governor and the Minister.

Suspected female suicide bomber set ablaze in Bauchi

Bauchi — A suspected female suicide bomber was yesterday burnt by an angry mob in Mudal Lawal market in Bauchi, Bauchi State. The incident, which occurred at about 7:00 pm attracted residents who rushed to the market area to behold the burnt body of the lady.

An eyewitness told Vanguard on phone that the alleged bomber refused to be screened and attempted to escape, sensing that she could not achieve her mission.

“A female, wearing a long hijab wanted to enter the market, but was stopped at the entrance to be searched. “The security team at the market started to suspect that she was carrying an Improvised Explosive Devise, IED, which made her to refuse the screening at the market. “Sensing that she could not achieve her mission, the suspected bomber attempted to escape but the angry mob went into action and set her ablaze.”

Confirming the incident, state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Haruna Mohammed, said: “The lady was attacked by irate mob who took the law into their hands and set her ablaze. “As a result, she died on the spot before rescue could come. Police patrol teams, including Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit rushed to the scene, dispersed the crowd and restored normalcy to the area.”

The PPRO said the case was under investigation and that intensive patrol was ongoing in the area to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further breakdown of law and order. He then warned members of the public against taking the law into their hands, adding that anyone arrested would face the full wrath of the law.

Female suicide bomber kills Bauchi’s First Bank customers

A female suicide bomber yesterday morning, at about 10 am, bombed bank customers at the First Bank, Azare, Bauchi State while banking transactions were going on, killing seven and injuring 10.

A resident of Azare town who spoke on the condition of anonymity said most of the victims were workers who were in the bank to withdraw their salaries.

Reuters however reported that nine people died from the explosion.

The suicide bomber, it was learnt concealed the Improvised Explosive Device, IED, in her hijab and joined the bank customers on a queue to make withdrawals from one of the bank’s ATMs centres before the bomb exploded.

The Information and Communications Officer, at the Federal Medical Centre, Azare, Mallam Dahiru Haruna Shira, confirmed the incident on the telephone with newsmen adding that both the injured and the dead were brought to the hospital.

However, the Chief Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre, Azare, Dr. Abdullahi Ibrahim,  said at the hospital that 14 dead bodies and 37 injured persons were brought to the hospital.

Ibrahim also said 16 other victims were still on admission, while others were referred to Malam Aminu Kano University Teaching Hospital, Kano because the victims had brain injuries.

Two women were among those who died, and most of the people are from within Azare, while others are from Shira and Giade, he said.

The First Bank building where the suicide bombing took place had all its glass windows shattered. All banks in the town have been closed down and banking services suspended.

Another bank staff who spoke on the issue said about 20 persons died while another said that the woman who carried out the attack had her body cut into two even as her head was found across the road near a suya spot, adding that a student of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, who was in the bank to make withdrawals when the incident that killed her occurred.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in Bauchi State, DSP Haruna Mohammed, also confirmed the bank attack by a suspected Boko Haram female suicide bomber, pointing out that  seven persons died while another 10 sustained various degrees of injuries.

“On the 7/11/2014 at about 10:05hrs,there was a bomb explosion suspected to have been carried out by a female suicide bomber at First Bank premises in Azare Town, Bauchi State,” he said, adding that the, “scene of incident was visited by the Commissioner of Police for an on the spot assessment and to commiserate with victims.”

He further said that, ‘’five of those wounded were treated and discharged.”

According to him, “The entire surrounding have been cordoned off and swept by Police Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit, E.O.D,” even as “four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident and they are assisting the police with useful information that could aid investigation.’’

A bomb blast on Wednesday night at a motor park in Azare in Bauchi State killed five persons.

A statement on the incident issued in Bauchi by the State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Haruna Mohammed, indicated that 12 others sustained severe injuries.

He said the incident occurred at about 9.45pm when explosives planted in the park detonated.

He said the injured had been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Azare, for treatment and the scene of the incident cordoned off.

Haruna said no arrest had been made yet, but that investigations had commenced on the incident.

The illiterate action displayed by Nigerians over the fear of Ebola has continued to claim lives in some part of Nigeria.

Two to three persons have been reported dead in Bauchi State after consuming excessive salt with the intention of preventing Ebola Virus.

Among the victims is an old man in Misau Local council and other three in Bigi, Gudum Sayawa and Bayara village in Bauchi who were reported to have hypertension could not survive the supposed prevention.

A source disclosed that the old man drank more than two cups of salted water after showering with same and robbing on his body, according to the directives passed by his children.

The source said that less than an hour after he consumed the salt, he started defecating continuously and died the next day at about 7am.

The victim in Gudum Sayawa who was identified as Mr. John Ayuba was said to have missed a bag of salt with a full drum filled with water to cater for the large number of people in his house, he died of diarrhea and vomiting after drinking and bathing with it.

Vanguard quoted a health worker as saying that ” a hypertensive patient who drank three classes of salt water was brought by his relatives to the hospital. He did not survive the crisis as his blood level has exceeded the normal range”

In the same community, a pregnant woman, Mrs. Hanatu Kushi was said to have had a miscarriage after drinking salt water solution and currently receiving treatment at the ATBUTH.

Meanwhile the state commission for health, Dr. Abubakar Sani Malami debunked the story that four people lost their lives as a result of excessive intake of salt water, adding that the rumour was to cause panic.

He advised Nigerians to remain alert and report any suspected cases of severe fever to the nearest health facility, adding that the government had put in place, adequate measure to treat infected persons.

Ritualists pluck 9-yr-old boy’s eyes in Bauchi

BAUCHI — The Bauchi State Police Command has disclosed that some unknown ritualists attacked and removed the eyes of a nine-year-old boy in Toro Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Haruna Mohammed, who confirmed the incident yesterday, said around 2.30 pm, unknown assailants, suspected to be ritualists, attacked and removed the eyes of a nine-year-old Haruna Dahiru of Badiko ward in Toro Local Government Area of the state.

It was learnt that the victim was rearing cattle at Babujaye in Gumau village when the ritualists trailed his movement to a solidarity area where they attacked him.

According to the Haruna, “the victim’s movement was trailed by the ritualists to a solidarity area before he was attacked.

“The scene was visited by the Police detectives attached to Gumau Division and the victim was rushed to General Hospital Toro for treatment.”

He, however, assured that the police had commenced investigation into the matter and were also making efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

Gunmen kill district head, 2 others in Bauchi

Unknown gunmen, on Saturday, night invaded Soro village in Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, killing the district head, Alhaji Abdurrahman Isa Baba and two other persons in the process and carted away huge sums of money.

Residents informed journalists on Sunday that the men, six in number, arrived at the village, armed and opened fire on the 45-year-old district head and one of his relatives, who was together with him in his sitting room at the time of the incidence and collected an undisclosed amount of money.

According to the sources, the bandits killed another person outside the building in their bid to escape from the scene before people could arrive to the rescue.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mohammed Haruna, told journalists that the deceased were killed by the gunmen at about 8.00 p.m. on Saturday, adding that the bandits escaped to unknown destination.

According to the PPRO, “six gunmen suspected to be armed bandits stormed Soro town in Ganjuwa LGA of Bauchi State and killed the District Head of Soro, Abdurrahman Isa Baba and two other traders, carted away undisclosed amount of money and escaped to unknown destination.”

Haruna informed that a team of combined security forces visited the scene of the incident and took the remains of the victims to the hospital, adding that the surrounding had been cordoned off and efforts were being intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects.

The police spokesperson added that investigations into the incident had since commenced, with a view to fishing out the bandits terrorising the area.

Fear grips Bauchi residents over Ebola as they shun meat for fish

Following the red  alert  over Ebola killer virus across the country, fish sellers are being heavily patronised in Bauchi, the Bauchi State capital, as residents shun meat in the light of the claim that the virus could be contracted through the eating of bush meat.

Reports from Bauchi, yesterday, said fish sellers at Wunti, Muda Lawal and Central markets, as well as those along the Maiduguri Road confirmed high patronage over the last few days. High patronage is also being recorded by business owners who have fish ponds in the state.

Mrs. Bolaji Olorunwaju, a fish seller, said the Ebola alert scared people away from consuming bush meat, adding that they now patronize fish.

“Since last week, I have made great profit from the sale of fish. I now make between five to ten thousand naira a day unlike the former situation when I made five thousand a day.”

Another seller opposite the Bauchi stadium, Sani Maigari, said his fish business had blossomed in the last two weeks because of the fear by residents that the Ebola virus could be contacted through the consumption of meat.

Reacting to the development, the Director of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency, PHCDA, Umar Gamawa, said the state government had put in place measures to forestall the outbreak of the virus.

Police arrest Boko Haram ‘chief butcher’ in Balmo Forest

Police detectives attached to Bauchi State Police Command have arrested one Mohammed Zakari, a top operative of the dreaded Boko Haram sect in Balmo Forest.

Zakari, 30, who identified himself as the “chief butcher” of Boko Haram, was apprehended last Saturday along Darazo-Basrika Road while fleeing from the intensive counter-insurgency operations going on around the Forest.

The suspect, who hails from Kaigamari Village, Daptchari in Darazo Local Government Area, Bauchi State, is the self-styled “chief butcher” of the insurgent group at the Balmo camp and was said to be linked with the recent slaughter of seven people, including women and children in the area.

A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, in Abuja on Tuesday, said that findings as well as disclosures from the suspect will assist law enforcement agencies in tracking down some other members of the terror cell.

It explained that the terror suspect was discovered to have actively participated in the April attack on Customs officers at Kari Town, along Maiduguri Road, Bauchi State.

The Police stated that investigation revealed that he was trained in the art of insurgency at Gombe Forest under the leadership of a fleeing insurgent, one Abba Taura, adding that he moved to Balmo Forest only three months ago.

The Police High Command called on the citizens in the affected areas to be on guard for any suspicious or strange character fleeing from the Forest.

It also called for the understanding and support of the public to assist the Police and other Security Forces in tackling insurgency, terrorism and other related crimes headlong, noting that “although the war on terrorism is unrelenting, it is certainly not insurmountable and must be won with the cooperation of all.”

Troops on mopping up operations in the forest had last week recovered over 10 rifles, as well as more than 80 General Purpose Machine Guns, tubes of Rocket Propelled Grenades and Launchers, cables,  wires and thousands of rounds of assorted ammunition.

They also recovered uniforms of security agencies including protective clothing used by the insurgents.

An explosion in the red light district of Bauchi city has killed 10 people and injured 14 others, police said Saturday.

The cause of the late Friday blast was not immediately clear, but Boko Haram Islamists have attacked Bauchi repeatedly during their five-year uprising aimed at creating a strict Islamic state in the north.

Bauchi state police spokesman Mohammed Haruna said the targeted building in the Bayan Gari neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city was widely known as a brothel.

“Ten people were confirmed dead, while 14 others sustained various degrees of injury,” Haruna said, adding that the explosion went off at roughly 10:00 pm (2100 GMT).

“The entire area has been cordoned off and (the) scene secured,” Haruna said. Bomb attacks on targets which Boko Haram has branded sinful – including bars, churches and schools teaching a Western curriculum – have formed a major part of the insurgency.

Nigeria has estimated that more than 10,000 people have been killed since the conflict began in 2009. The violence has escalated in recent months, with more than 2,000 deaths recorded since the start of the year.

The capital Abuja has been hit with three separate bomb attacks since mid-April, most recently on Wednesday when 24 people were killed in a blast at a popular shopping plaza in the heart of the city.

Police had initially given a death toll of 21 for the attack, but the health ministry revised those figures upwards on Saturday.

In Kano, the largest city in the mainly Muslim north, a bomb planted in the parking lot of a public health college killed eight people on Monday.

The Islamist extremists have received unprecedented international attention in recent weeks following their April 14 abduction of more than 200 teenage girls from the town of Chibok in the northeast.

The gruesome mass abduction has drawn condemnation from governments and prominent people worldwide and offers of military help from major world powers to boost Nigeria’s counter-insurgency effort.

Gunmen burn two schools, kill one in Bauchi

UNKNOWN gunmen on Wednesday burnt down two primary schools and an MTN telecommunication mast in Shadarki village in Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The attack is coming barely 28 days after unknown gunmen attacked the Government Girl’s Secondary School Yana in Shira Local Government Area of the state in which a five-year old girl was burnt to death and staff quaters, the school bus and an eight-man block rank and file quarters were all burnt down.

Other facilities attacked were the Yana branch of First Bank and large sums of money carted away, MTN, Glo and Etisalat Telecommunication masts were also destroyed.

The spokesperson for the Bauchi State Police Command, DSP Haruna Mohammed, in a statement in Bauchi, said no death was recorded during the over one hour attack.

“On May 14, 2014 between 10 and 11pm, unknown gunmen went on the rampage and burnt down Shadarki and Yelwan Darazo Primary Schools in Shadarki village in Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State,” Mohammed said.

The PPRO added that the gunmen also burnt down one MTN Mast Site T.1137 and the surveillance monitoring site located adjacent to the mast.

He said the entire surroundings had been cordoned off by the combined security forces and efforts were being intensified to arrest the suspects.

Also, the Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed that suspected Fulani ambushed and attacked a car in Bogoro Local Government Area of the state killing one person and injuring five passengers including the driver.

The PPRO confirmed this in a statement on Thursday.

“On May 14, 2014 at about 7.45pm, hoodlums attacked a Peugeot 806 vehicle with registration Number XA.06.BGR while returning from Bogoro Market along Kurum Dodo and Gobiya.

“As a result, a motor-cycle rider identified as Bogoro Tafiya Mwari, ‘M’ was hacked to death while the driver, one Isaiah Andrawus and four others, sustained various degrees of   injuries,” Mohammed stated.

He said some of the victims were rushed to Bogoro General Hospital and Jos University Teaching Hospital for treatment.

He said three expended ammunition of 7.62mm were recovered at the scene.

The police spokesperson said that investigation into the incidence had commenced and efforts were on to arrest the fleeing suspects.

It was also gathered that but for the quick intervention of the Sayawa elders and Special Task Force (STF) in the area, angry youths would have lynched the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Local Government, Mr. Simon Bukata, during the burial of the deceased.

The youths upon seeing Bukata, at the venue of the burial, were said to have quickly mobilised and rushed to attack him but were immediately stopped by the STF and the elders.

Blame no one but governors for insecurity in the north, says Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday indicted some unnamed state governors in the north-eastern part of the country over the spate of insecurity in the zone that has left hundreds of people dead.

He said the unnamed governors who turn around to attribute the violence to bad leadership failed in their responsibility of providing basic primary and secondary education for the children.

He said the uneducated children who form an army of unemployed and unemployable youths are now tools in the hands of miscreants who feed and arm them to kill innocent citizens.

Jonathan spoke at the Peoples Democratic Party’s North East Unity Rally held in Bauchi, Bauchi State.

He said while the Federal Government was doing its part by providing tertiary education to teeming Nigerian youths, state governments must also play their roles and stop pointing accusing fingers at him.

He said he played his role well to end insecurity in Bayelsa State when he was the deputy governor and the state governor, hence he expected state governors to play their roles too.

He added that north-eastern states had lost more people than any other part of the country in the violence orchestrated by the fundamental Islamic sect, Boko Haram because people refused to do the right thing.

Meanwhile, Jonathan  on Saturday also said the problems of youth restiveness and insecurity within the African continent might have been caused  by “external forces” working against the progress of the region.

Jonathan was not specific on what he meant by “external forces” but stated however, that the growth which the continent had recorded within the last few years might be a major reason for people who are envious of the region to cause instability.

He stated these in Abuja at the opening session of the Seventh joint annual meetings of the Economic Commission of Africa conference of African ministers of finance, planning and economic development and the African Union conference of ministers of economy and finance.

In a related development, the Katsina State Government said it had concluded arrangements to convene a special security meeting with neighbouring Zamfara on ways to fight crime and attacks on villages.

Gov. Ibrahim Shema said this at a meeting with his Zamfara counterpart, Gov. Abdulaziz Yari, at the Government House in Gusau.

He expressed concerns over increasing criminal activities, where large number of heavily armed hoodlums invaded villages, maimed and killed several community members. (0)
