The Ogun State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) led by former state Governor, Chief Segun Osoba, has denied that it received financial assistance from the presidency in the prosecution of its political campaigns against the state Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, and other elected officers in the state.
The party, in a statement signed by Chief Olu Agemo, Alhaji Abimbola Awofeso and Comrade Clement Adeniyi, who are the SDP chairman, secretary and publicity secretary respectively, lamented that the party and its leaders have been victims of blackmail on the social media and that the party never got help from the presidency for the elections.
The party leaders maintained that the SDP opposition to the Amosun-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government was driven by principle and not by financial gains.
“Our struggle in the state was not based on financial gains. None of those delegations at the highest level can say that any financial transaction transpired between us.
“We thank the powerful delegation from the presidency for appreciating that our disagreement is within the progressive family. The SDP in the state was self-funding throughout the campaign and elections. Even when the national body of SDP wanted to send us some funds, we advised that it should be sent to other SDP states that may be in financial trouble.
“As progressives, we have resolved to remain fully within the progressive family. We wish to thank our Royal Fathers, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo and the Awujale of Ijebuland, Dr. Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who up to the last moment, were still resolute in finding a solution to the disagreement.
“We reaffirm our faith in the honesty and strength of character of our leader, Osoba and thank his family particularly Beere Aderinsola Osoba who remained a strong pillar of support throughout the campaigns and elections.
“Our candidate has however, after the announcement of the result, sent a congratulatory text message to Amosun,” they noted.
