The President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari may have just started his revenge on media that attacked him during his Presidential campaign.
The African Independent Television, AIT, was on Monday barred from covering the visit of the Cuban ambassador over what they term as family concerns and security issues.
Vanguard quoted Buhiar’s media aide, Mallam Garba Shehu that the ban was a warning which will be revoked after issues relating to security and ethics were addressed with the medium.
He said “AIT has been asked to stay aside based on security and family concerns. In addition, Buhari has decided that they will have to resolve some issues relating to issues of standard and ethics.
“We will be t alking with them to try and resolve the matter, but for now the station has been asked to stay aside, because like I said there are some family and security concerns. They have been asked to step down their coverage until we resolve the matter with them on ethics and standards.”
When asked whether he should be quoted, Shehu said, “yes you can quote me that I said we have asked them to step aside and that we are resolving the issues of ethics and standards with them.”
But Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, was not barred as it was one of the media that published documentary against the President-elect during the campaign, probably because it’s a government owned medium which can easily be controlled through restructuring.
Many Nigerians had expressed fear over media infringement in Buhari’s administration as such was one of the legacies attributed to his administration when he first ruled as the military head of state in 1983-1985.
