Police in Edo arrests traditional ruler after missing rifle found in his bedroom

A traditional ruler of Sasaro, a community in Akoko-Edo Local government area of Edo state have been arrested after police found a police rifle allegedly taken from a policeman attached to some expatriate workers in the area in his bedroom.


According to the information gathered, a resident in the community who works for a company owned by a Lebanese drowned when swimming in a river near to his place of work on Tuesday.


Out of fear, the Lebanese and other employees in the company ran to the village to report the incident but as usual by Nigerians who believed in jungle justice, pounced on them, including the two policemen attached to the expatriates in the process, seized one of the rifles.


It took the intervention of other policemen called by the beaten ones to free them from the hoodlums.


While searching for the missing gun, it was discovered in the bedroom of the monarch. The traditional ruler was immediately whisked away to Igarra police station for interrogation and later, transferred to the state command for further questioning.


Stephen Onwochei, the newly posted Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) could not confirm the incident but promised to get full details. Meanwhile, a senior police officer in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) who preferred not to be named as he is not authorised to speak on the matter confirmed the development.
