A former Nigeria and Rayo Vallecano goalkeeper, Wilfred Agbonavbare, has died of cancer at the age of 48.
He died on Tuesday morning in a Madrid, Spain, hospital.
His former club confirmed his death on the club’s website.
The former New Nigeria Bank of Benin goalkeeper played at Rayo from 1990 to 1996 and was also a member of the Nigeria squad which won the 1994 African Cup of Nations.
He was also a member of the Super Eagles that reached the second round of the USA ’94 World Cup.
Eagles striker, Ikechukwu Uche, who plays in Spain, tweeted his condolences shortly after the demise of the ex-Eagles goal tender.
“I am shocked by the death of Wilfred Agbonavbare, Nigerian football legend. Feel so sad. My condolences to his family and friends,” Uche said.
