Outcome of Abacha, Jonathan close door meeting

By Ehi Ekhator, Naija Center News

The Son of the former head of state, Mohammed Abacha met the Nigeria President, Goodluck Jonathan behind close door on Friday as the party prepare for its gubernatorial primaries on Monday.

Speculators say that the meeting was to strategise for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in order to triumph over its main opposition, All Progressives Congress (APC).

Last year June, despite the N446 billion  corruption charges against the son of the late Abacha, the Federal Government intentionally dropped all charges and supported his governorship candidacy in Kano.

Speculators say that the PDP took the big step due to Mohammed popularity in Kano, which means he could be able to dislodge the APC candidate backed by Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso from the state with his influence

Though Abacha did not disclose the discussion had with the President, but he was confident to tell the State House corespondent that he is sure PDP would defeat APC in Kano.

It could be recalled that Kwankwaso became the governor of Kano under PDP before defecting to APC with the other governors. Well, Muhammed said while addressing the journalists that Kano was stolen from PDP and his party is on the way to recover its stolen mandate.

He seems to be very sure he would win the gubernatorial flag bearer of the party

“We are hopeful; I wouldn’t want to say too much. I said it before that it was a PDP state; it was a PDP ticket. It was taken or converted or even stolen; whatever you want to call it, so be it. The chances of the PDP are still bright. He said.

Due to Nigerians reaction to the unexpected withdrawal of all charges against Muhammad Abacha, the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Adoke, justified the nolle proseque granted, saying it was done for the interest of the country and not for political reasons.

The government had preferred the nine-count charge of stealing against him in February 2014, claiming that the amount was stolen from its coffers between 1995 and 1998.

But during its withdrawal of the case against Abacha, the government urged the court to strike out the case since it had since discovered “fresh facts” on the matter.

Nigerian lawyer rose against the administration over the matter but it refused to budge.
