Senator Abe Lied On Reason For Defecting To APC - PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Rivers State Chapter says there is no iota of truth in the statement credited to the Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Magnus Abe, positing that he left the PDP for the All Progressives Congress as a protest against the refusal of President Goodluck Jonathan to implement the recommendations of the United Nations Programme (UNEP) report on Ogoniland.

PDP PDP

The PDP which describes Abe’s  excuse as flimsy wonders why the well-being and affairs of the Ogoni people will at this time that he is aspiring for governorship ticket on the platform of the APC be of serious concern to him when records abound that he has consistently been opposed to the struggle for justice and emancipation of his kith and kin right from the days of his membership of the Rivers State House of Assembly, as a Minority Leader, serving on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP.

The PDP explains it would have ignored him, so as not to boost his image recovery campaign but for the need to explain the true reasons for his defection to the APC to the Ogoni people, whom the party believes are more intelligent and informed than what Abe and his allies had imagined.

The Party also recalls that the reasons given by Senator Abe and his colleagues when the decision to defect from the PDP was mooted are in contrast to the reason presented today. The PDP however believes whatever claim made by the Senator for his defection is only meant to deceive the people as he (Abe) is fond of defecting from one political party to the other, which therefore presents him as a politician without concrete principle and ideology.

It is a known fact that Magnus Abe, like his master, Gov Amaechi, left the PDP for the APC on selfish political ambitions, which unfortunately the APC has today refused to offer them after they have wasted huge financial resources of the State in pursuing their aspirations. That is the truth of the matter. So, making such claims is aimed at deceiving people and distorting facts as well as playing to the gallery.

The PDP can proudly affirm that as far as the issues of the development of the Niger Delta and the component communities are concerned, and in consideration of available records of personal interventions and relationship, Governor Amaechi and Senator Magnus Abe are not President Jonathan’s match and can never be seen to be at par with him.

The issue of UNEP report implementation, as much as we know, is PDP and Mr. President’s top priority, and must be executed accordingly as a further step to the setting up of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Programme (HYPREP), which is headed by an Ogoni daughter.

While calling on Senator Abe and Governor Amaechi to stop politicizing the UNEP report on Ogoni, we urge the people of Ogoni not to take those frivolous claims and positions by these selfish politicians seriously, but to remain assured that the PDP government will continue to hold them in high esteem and ensure that the Ogoni environment is completely remediated and made habitable.

The PDP is however not surprised that Senator Abe in his statement said the delay in the implementation of the UNEP report was not the fault of the oil giant, Shell, but that of the Nigerian government, because as much as we can recall, Magnus Abe had over the years maintained strong and visible support for the oil multinational against the aspiration of his people, whose agitation was ventilated through the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, MOSOP, a Movement Abe had been opposed to all his time in government.

It is therefore the expectation of the Party and the people that the Senator should change stance and be on the side of the people he ought to represent than imposing himself, his selfish political ambition on the people and lying on sensitive issues to regain relevance and acceptance.
