Hold state government for poor basic amenities - Okonjo-Iweala tells Nigerians

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has lashed at the state governors over the way they misuse the monthly allocation they receive from the Federal Government.


The Minister wondered why Nigerians would blame the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan for the failure of some state government despite basic public services such as education, health and agriculture falls under the concurrent list.


She disclosed this while addressing more than 1,544 graduated students at the 12th Convocation of Babcock University, BU, Ilishan Remo. She said that the monthly allocation received by some state governors are bigger than allocation of Liberia, Gambia and the Republic of Benin.


Okonjo-Iweala who was awarded with Dr of Science in Global Economic Development, Honoris Causa, said that Nigerians should hold their state government responsible for the poor standard of living instead accusing the Federal Government of insensitivity


She disclosed further that states like Akwa-Ibom, Rivers State, Delta State, Bayelsa, Lagos, Kano, Katsina, Oyo, Kaduna and Borno were given the highest allocation in 2013, adding that the money they received from the federation account is more than the annual budgetary allocation of neighbouring countries like Gambia, Republic of Benin and Liberia.
