Rescue of abducted children: The intrigues, rigmarole & frustrations behind Kidnapper nanny

The joy of the couple whose three children were abducted by a maid in Lagos knew no bounds, Wednesday, after they found their children, hale and hearty, dumped in a building at Shasha, a suburb of the city.

Before their eventual discovery, the couple had reportedly traversed round Lagos and other adjourning areas in company of operatives from the Special Investigations Bureau, SIB, attached to Lagos State Police command headquarters in Ikeja.

EARLY WARNING

Incidentally, few weeks before this abduction took place, the State Police Command had issued a release advising residents to always investigate properly and document the background of people they want to engage as house helps. They further advised that police should be fully involved during the process of engagement so that they would be able to document the identities of such people in order to avoid ugly incidents like this.

FAMILY RAISE ALARM

The missing Children

The missing Children

Police sources said immediately the distraught couple, Mr. and Mrs. Orekoya, raised alarm after discovering that a house help, Mary Akinloye abducted their children just 24 hours after she was employed by the family via OLX, an online sales portal, the State Police boss, Kayode Aderanti directed his men at Surulere to swing into action and carry out preliminary investigations.

Tension heightened the following day when instead of the maid showing up with the children, she spoke with the family on phone and handed over to an accomplice who gave them a two-day ultimatum to produce N15 million ransom with threats that they would lose the children if they failed to make the money available. In fact, it was gathered that the kidnappers used the word ‘delete ‘ to describe the extent they were ready to go if the family failed to comply with their demand. The traumatized mother of the children did not hesitate when she promised to PAY N10 million.

POLICE SWINGS INTO ACTION

Piqued by the development, the visibly worried Police boss then directed that the case be transferred to the Special Investigations Bureau, SIB, at the headquarters where the Superintendent of Police in-charge, Veronica Ameh-Akpa, a tested and highly intelligent officer, was detailed to set up a crack team with stern instructions to rescue the missing children and round up the kidnappers within 48 hours. That was how the stage was set for the melodrama, intrigues, frustrations and eventual rescue of the missing children.

Police sources intimated Crime Guard that the team led by one Supol Bright swung into action by constantly keeping discreet tab on the kidnappers who were busy issuing threats upon threats to the family. While negotiations were going on, operatives of the SIB were busy counselling the family, collecting data and at the same time, combing all nooks and crannies of the city of excellence in search of clues. Their efforts were also complemented by those of operatives from the dreaded Special anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, who swooped on all known criminal hide outs and black spots in search of the kidnappers.

APPREHENSION SETS IN

It was gathered that the hoodlums were very apprehensive and were expecting their ransom after they read that family members of the kidnapped children were publicly making frantic appeals to good spirited individuals, churches and cooperate bodies to help them raise the ransom in order to save their children.

They, therefore, increased their calls and demand for ransom with threats to ‘terminate lives of the children if the family should play pranks.’ They later reduced the ransom from N13 million to N8 million and then eventually to N2.5 million. A representative of the family was detailed to PAY it into the designated bank of their choice.

PAYMENT OF RANSOM AND CONNIVANCE WITH BANK OFFICIAL

That done, SIB agents were detailed to keep vigil permanently over the account with bank officials. The game plan was to allow the kidnapped have access to the ransom without hindrance. This was to re-assure them that it was paid and to safeguard the children. While the security agents were dutiful watching over the account, the clever criminals went and withdrew some money from two different ATM points at Mushin.

The dare-devils who are suspected to be conniving with a bank official were able to withdraw money from one of the points where their CCTV was faulty. Detectives strongly suspect that they may have succeeded in carrying out the smart manoeuvre with the aid of an insider in the bank. Police authorities immediately blocked the account in other to make it impossible for them to carry out further withdrawals.

THE RIGMAROLE AND MANOUVER

Assured now that their ransom was intact, they called the father of the children to go to a point at Ikorodu and carry his children. The elated man sped off with all the energy he could muster, closely followed by agents of SIB but ended up not seeing his children. As the crestfallen man was bemoaning his fate, the abductors called again and directed him to go to Shagamu.

When he got to Shagamu, they called again and directed him back to Ikorodu. At this stage, according to police sources, they suspected that the criminals were merely playing games. More over, the police team keeping tab on them were able to decipher that the caller was still operating from somewhere around Oshodi inside Lagos. They beat a fast retreat and started combing black spots inside Lagos. This singular decision by the team leader paid off but unfortunately, it failed to lead to the arrest of the suspects who ended up dumping the innocent and hapless children naked inside a bag in an uncompleted building around Shasha area of Egbeda, Lagos.

SUCCOR AT LAST

The children were found with their skin ravaged by mosquitoes by a man who over heard their strident cries from the building. The good Samaritan immediately alerted the Police at Shasha who raced to the scene and rescued the children. They were immediately rushed to the Police hospital, Ikeja where they were treated and later released to their joyous parents.

Meanwhile, Crime Guard learnt that operatives at the SIB and SARS renewed their resolve to crack the case and intensified efforts. It eventually paid off as they were able to corner the fleeing house help inside a dilapidated building at the same Shasha. As at the time of writing this report, serious efforts are in top gear to round up her accomplices. Detectives are said to be working round the clock in that regard.

Pastor"s marriage ends as wife gets pregnant for Okadaman

By Onozure Dania

Lagos—An Igando Customary Grade A Court has officially dissolved the 18-year-old marriage of Pastor Chris Onyekachi-Madu and his estranged wife, Augusta, after she got pregnant for an Okadaman, while still living with him.

CourtCourt president, Rasaq Ishola-Adeyeri, said in his judgment that from the cumulative evidence before the court, it had been proved beyond reasonable doubt that the relationship between the plaintiff and the defendant had hit the rocks, since all efforts to settle both parties had proved abortive.

He said the defendant had refused to show up in court after she had been served court summons on three occasions.

Adeyeri said: “It is, therefore, assumed that she too is no longer interested in the union again; the plaintiff also maintained his stand to part ways peacefully with the respondent.”

The President also said that based on the pronouncement of the plaintiff, the court had no option than to separate them.

He said: “The motion, therefore, succeeds and order is, hereby, given that the marriage between Chris Onyekachi and Augusta Madu is officially dissolved from today January 28.

“The custody of the two children is, hereby, referred to the family court within Lagos Judicial Division, who has executive right to hear and determine matters involving children under 18 years.”

It added that it had ensured immediate reactivation of all animal health components of the Emergency Preparedness Plan on bird flu for Nigeria, adding that the conduct of surveillance activities around infected areas to determine the level of spread of the disease were being undertaken.

FMARD said, “All stakeholders in the poultry industry are urged to enhance hygienic practices (bio-security measures) which include but not limited to regular disinfection, proper disposal of dead carcasses and poultry products and timely reporting of mortalities in poultry and other bird species to veterinary authorities.

“We wish to assure the public that given our experiences in handling previous outbreaks and with your full cooperation in the implementation of containment measures, we are determined to contain this disease again within a short time. We will keep you informed as events unfold.”

A veterinary doctor, Dr. Femi Oboye, said government must embark on a massive vaccination of birds at poultry farms across the country.

Political thugs unleash terror, destroy properties worth millions in Lagos

By Esther Onyegbula & Micheal Ediri

Lagos—Political thugs weekend unleashed terror on residents of Ajegunle, a suburb of Lagos, destroying properties worth millions of naira during a political campaign.

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola

The thugs, numbering over 300, allegedly invaded Ajegunle and its environs during a political declaration campaign by a politician (names withheld) and a member Lagos State House of Assembly, who is angling to contest for the fifth term.

According to reports, the politician, who was accompanied by the thugs during the declaration, gave out bundles of N1000 notes in appreciation of their undiluted support towards his political ambition around Alao bus stop in Ojo road.

Trouble, it was learned, started when the sharing formula did not go well with some of the thugs as those from Campus in Adejiyan and Alaba streets took advantage of the situation to unleash terror on residents, using guns and axes to frighten residents.

They also looted shops and damaged parked vehicles.

Also seen were damaged vehicles, properties and shrapnels of broken bottles and shattered car windscreens which littered major streets as Jinadu, Apasa Safejo and Alao streets, while most shops remained shut.

When contacted, the Layeni Divisional Police Officer, CSP Chijoke Ndu, was unavailable but Vanguard reliably gathered that the division arrested and charged to court over eight thugs allegedly caught with pistols.

Collapse building: TB Joshua shuns coroner"s inquest

Prophet TB Joshua has again failed to appear at the coroner’s inquest today to explain how 116 people died in a building collapse at his Lagos church, Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN)

TB Joshua TB Joshua

TB Joshua had been summoned to give evidence at the hearing into the September 12 tragedy at his church, which left 84 South Africans among the dead.

Coroner Oyetade Komolafe said last week that Joshua, would be arrested if he failed to show but Joshua worker did not appear on Wednesday to be questioned over his claims that sabotage from a low-flying aircraft and a terror attack may have caused the tragedy.

“The Man of God has not been personally served the witness summons,” his lawyer, Olalekan Ojo told the court when asked about his client’s whereabouts.

“He was unavoidably absent when the sheriff went for the service. We don’t want the impression to be created that The Prophet is avoiding the court.”

Expert witnesses at the hearing have previously ruled out the theory of aerial sabotage or an explosion and the court has been told that the guesthouse did not have any planning permission.

Inspections indicated that other structures on the site, including the church’s main auditorium which Joshua claims was designed by the Holy Spirit, were structurally defective.

Ojo refused to accept the witness summons on behalf of Joshua, saying he was not authorised to do so, but promised to tell the court when his client would be available.

Similarly, the building contractors did not receive their summonses because they could not be identified or located, he added.

Komolafe said: “We want Prophet Joshua to know that the court is not persecuting anybody but (trying) to find the truth. He should come.

“As a prophet of God that he claims to be, he must not do anything that will make him to be at variance with the law.”

Death toll now 40 in TB Joshua building collapse, says NEMA

Lagos – Forty people have now died as a result of a building collapse at the megachurch of one of Nigeria’s most famous preachers and televangelists, the country’s main rescue body said on Sunday.

“It’s now 40 dead,” Ibrahim Farinloye, southwest coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), told AFP by text message.

Some 124 people were rescued alive from the rubble of the building, believed to be a guesthouse for foreign followers of TB Joshua’s The Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), in the Ikotun area of Lagos.

The two-storey building, located in the sprawling compound of the vast church complex, came down on Friday afternoon. It was undergoing construction work to add extra floors.

TB Joshua, dubbed “The Prophet”, has an almost fanatical following among Nigerians and across the world, attracted by his purported healing powers and prophecies.

Joshua preaches to massive crowds at his megachurch in Ikotun every week and, according to his website, SCOAN “hosts thousands of national and international visitors” each year.

“People travel from around the world to witness and receive from the mighty work that God is doing in the life of Prophet TB Joshua,” it states.

Emergency services and the media were attacked as they tried to get to the building. Rescue operations were continuing on Sunday, Farinloye said.

Joshua said on his Facebook page TB Joshua Ministries that reports that the church auditorium had collapsed and that there had been heavy casualties were not correct.

“The few people that were there are being rescued,” he said on Friday.

Joshua was widely quoted in Nigeria’s media on Sunday as saying that a low-flying plane that had been repeatedly circling the building may have been responsible for the collapse.

Ikotun lies to the west of Lagos’ international airport.

TB Joshua claims collapse building, an attempt on his life

TB Joshua, one of Nigeria’s best known preachers, has linked a small plane circling over a church guesthouse in Lagos to its subsequent collapse.

At least 19 people died and 119 were injured when the two-storey guesthouse for members of the Synagogue Church of All Nations collapsed on Friday.

There is no official comment. Local officials have said additional floors were being added to the structure.

Joshua – also known as the Prophet – regularly preaches to vast crowds.

The popular televangelist says a small plane had circled over the building four times before it collapsed on Friday afternoon and it may have been an attempt to kill him.

“It was yesterday, Friday, as I was praying; they came to call me that there was an airplane hovering over the church. They said it is like it wanted to land,” his statement said.

He said about 30 minutes later, it came over the building several times.

“About five minutes after, the building came down.”

He gave journalists a CCTV video clip of the alleged plane, urging them “to use their discretion to write on what they saw”.

AFP news agency reports cited an official putting the number of deaths at 40. Many foreigners are believed to have been there at the time.

Mr Joshua’s services, at a mega-church in Lagos’s Ikotun district, are known for attracting thousands of people.

Followers in Nigeria and abroad believe he has the gifts of healing and prophecy.

Ebola situation in Nigeria and Guinea: encouraging signs - WHO

The outbreak of Ebola virus disease in west Africa continues to evolve, with cases confirmed in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. At present, no cases have been confirmed anywhere else in the world outside these 4 countries.

Nigeria

The situation in Lagos, Nigeria, where the first imported case was detected in July, looks reassuring. At present, the city’s 12 confirmed cases are all part of a single chain of transmission. Those infected by the initial case include medical staff involved in his treatment, a patient in the same hospital, and a protocol officer in very close contact with the patient.

The initial patient was vomiting frequently during travel and upon arrival. No one on the same flight was infected.

The full recovery to date of one infected contact is additional good news. It counters the widespread perception that infection with the Ebola virus is invariably a death sentence. Evidence suggests that early detection and supportive therapy increase the prospects of survival.

Intensive contact tracing, conducted by Nigerian health officials and staff from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has not, so far, identified any further confirmed cases outside the initial transmission chain.

The index case arrived in Lagos on 20 July and died on 25 July. The 21-day incubation period has lapsed. All 12 cases were confirmed in a WHO-approved laboratory.

The intensity of the search and monitoring effort raises cautious optimism that further spread of the virus in Nigeria can be stopped. The search for additional cases continues, as does the current high level of vigilance.

Guinea

The outbreak in Guinea, where the virus made its first appearance in west Africa last December, is less alarming than in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Public awareness of the facts about Ebola is higher there than in the other affected countries. Innovative solutions are being found. For example, respected community leaders have been used to secure the cooperation of 26 villages that were highly resistant to outside help.

The opening of these villages has resulted in a surge of reported cases. These are cases that were previously concealed; their reporting should not be interpreted as a sudden upsurge in Guinea’s outbreak.

However, the outbreak is not under control. As recent experience shows, progress is fragile, with a real risk that the outbreak could experience another flare-up. A case in a previously unaffected area was reported last week, indicating continuing spread to new areas.

Suspected suicide bomber arrested near Lagos airport

A suspected suicide bomber was arrested by security officials close to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos, on Monday.

Suspected suicide bomber Suspect

The presence of the young man who was disabled, threw the airport into confusion as people scampered for safety following the incident.

A source who confimed this to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity said the man was arrested for allegedly planning to bomb the Centrex unit of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency along the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

The source said the suspect was arrested by the security operatives as he attempted to detonate the explosive device he wore round his body, adding that the suspect’s movement attracted the attention of security operatives who rounded him up around the complex.

He said, “Our security men were curious of his presence at the place and they queried him, but the explanation he gave was not convincing. So, they kept an eye on him. A few seconds later, they discovered that he was struggling and protecting an object tied around his neck.

“The airport police command was promptly alerted and he was immediately handed over to the police. I can confirm to you that he was immediately taken to the Beesam Police Station within the airport. Why he chose NAMA and airport is still unknown to some of us here.”

As at press time, the suspect was still being held at the Beesam Police Station within the airport, undergoing interrogation.

When contacted, the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Mr. Waheed Salahu, declined to comment, saying that it would be too premature to talk with the media at the moment.

But a source close to the command confirmed the story to our correspondent.

Nigeria: Ebola patient survived, discharged in Lagos

Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, says the first Nigerian Ebola patient declared fit and discharged from hospital.

He told journalists in Lagos on Saturday that the patient, whose identity has not been revealed, was asked to go home after all the necessary medical examinations were carried out.

“The total number of Ebola cases now stands at 12, while the number of deaths remains four. The people under surveillance in Lagos are now 189, while six are in Enugu, in South-East Nigeria,” he said.

The minister also announced that the drug, Nano Silva, which was thought could be used to treat Ebola patients in Nigeria, was said not to have met the requirements of the National Health Research ethics code.

His statement is coming two days after the death of a fourth Ebola patient was reported.

In an effort to contain the spread of the virus, the Lagos State Government, the only state in Nigeria with reported cases of Ebola, had provided an isolation unit to accommodate persons who tested positive to the virus.

At a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Chukwu said eight persons were still alive, more than half of them doing very well and showing signs of recovery.

The discharged patient is believed to be among those he earlier said were recovering.

More details later.

Boko Haram claims responsibility for Lagos, Abuja attack

“I ordered (the bomber) who went and detonated it,” Abubakar Shekau says of the Lagos bomb, while claiming responsibility for the “bomb in filthy Abuja” that killed at least 22 people.

The leader of Nigeria’s Boko Haram Islamists has claimed responsibility for a June 25 bombing in the capital Abuja and an attack the same day at a fuel depot in Lagos, in a new video seen by AFP Sunday.

The authorities tried to cover up the Lagos attack, describing it as an industrial accident, but an AFP investigation revealed it was a deliberate explosion.

“I ordered (the bomber) who went and detonated it,” Abubakar Shekau says of the Lagos bomb, while claiming responsibility for the “bomb in filthy Abuja” that killed at least 22 people.

Shekau also voiced support for the extremist Sunni Islamic State (IS) militant group, which has taken over large swathes of Iraq and Syria, in a new video seen Sunday.

“My brethren… may Allah protect you,” Shekau said in the video given to AFP, listing IS chief, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Al-Qaeda head Ayman al-Zawahiri and Taliban leader Mullah Omar.

Mother abandons 10-months-old baby suffering from autism in Lagos

A ten-month old baby boy, suffering from autism, was on Friday, abandoned by his mother, within the premises of Alausa Secretariat, seat of the Lagos state government.

The baby, was abandoned on the bare floor, beside the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, a stone throw from the Round House, office of the Deputy Governor of the state.

The mother of the baby was nowhere to be found as at 3pm, when a passerby discovered the sleeping baby beside the rear tyre of a car, parked under a tree.

The Good Samaritan, on sighting the baby on the floor, took pity and made attempt to find a cloth, which she put the baby on.

She thereafter, alerted one of the officers in charge of the Press Centre who immediately informed the office of the Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), the ministry in charge of such cases.

The baby was in deep sleep, obviously drugged by his mother to prevent him from crying.

Concerned staff of the state government, who were shocked by the sight of the baby, could not fathom how the mother could have successfully walked into the premises of the Alausa secretariat; abandon her baby and escape, despite the presence of Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, placed in strategic places within the premises.

Officers of the Ministry of WAPA, a few minutes later, arrived and took custody of the baby.

Speaking on behalf of the state government, , Director, Child Development Department of the Ministry of WAPA,  Mrs. Alaba Fadiaro said the child will be put in the state’s special home centre in Ketu, assuring that adequate care will be given to him to ensure he is comfortable and healthy.

Fadiaro, however frowned at the decision of the mother to abandon her baby, saying that the state government runs a home where such babies are catered for and given the best of care.

“Every child needs a home, every child wants a mother and a father in her life, I don’t know why the mother of this child should abandon him. There are some provisions where you can take your child in Lagos state on a daily basis where he could receive care free of charge and people have been benefitting from this service. Nobody knows what can become of this child tomorrow; I know government, because we are very sensitive and passionate about issues of children in the state.

“I can assure you that the child will go to a convenient and comfortable home where he will be treated, where there are professionals there that would take him up and work on him,” Fadiaro assured.

She urged mothers with children suffering from Down syndrome to approach the state government or visit its facilities, stressing that such children could turn out to be skilled in one aspect or the other if given special care and attention.

“Our special home is in Ketu, with professionals there who manage such conditions, so the child will go there and will benefit from the facilities available. Mothers who have such children should know that abandonment is not the right attitude; there is always ability in disability. I know that if the necessary facilities are in place, these children will thrive and become something.

“I want to advice such mothers to come forward, opportunities are there for their children on a daily basis to have the care and then go home, every child needs the bond of their biological mothers. So when they come, it’s like a day school run for them, they are taken care of in the day and then in the evening, they can take them home. The mother who abandoned this boy perhaps did not know where to go, but that is not the best option,” she added.
