Buhari will make a big mistake if he dumps National Confab Report – Victor Umeh

Immediate past National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh, is the senatorial candidate of the party for the rerun election in Anambra Central. In this interview, Umeh speaks on his mission in the Senate if he wins. Excerpts:

It’s some weeks to the Anambra Central senatorial rerun election. How prepared are you?

Victor Umeh
Victor Umeh

I am fully prepared for the election. My party, APGA, is ready and I have been going round to talk to the people and visiting them even in their private homes and reaching out to major stakeholders. I am talking to people of various groups as wells as maintaining a communication line with the voters of Anambra Central.   I have also been on radio and television programmes, dishing out to the electorates the relevant issues and convincing them to continue supporting me.

Of course you are aware that this is not entirely a brand new election. We have campaigned very vigorously before the March 28, 2015 general election, which was later annulled by the Court of Appeal. One thing that pleases me now is that any place I go to, I discover that the people have made up their minds that I am the candidate they want at this time to go and represent them. So I find it very easy talking with them because even before I say anything, they take it over and start reeling my achievements and antecedents that make them properly convinced that at this time they need my services as a senator. In summary I will say that the level of enthusiasm on the part of the electorate of Anambra Central Senatorial District is quite high. So, I am just waiting for the day to come and let this elections be over so that I can settle down to task to work for them.

Do you see the forthcoming election as an easy battle for you?

In politics, if you are not humble, you can over shoot your range, but I will like to say without being immodest, that 15 of us were all part of the election in 2015, including the two others from PDP and APC and I clearly won the election. I got 86,000 recorded for me in the result sheet, and PDP, which was all over the place using Amoured Personnel Carriers, INEC and security agencies, got 93,000 recorded for it. It was me, like David in the Bible, having 86,000 votes and the big goliath, who was everywhere having 93000 recorded for it. APC got 24,000 with its super candidate, Dr Chris Ngige.

Coming to the 12 candidates that are in the race now, no one can take anyone’s fight and fight for him or her, and most of them have been calling me that they want to work for me, They are candidates of other parties, but they believe in what I can do. I have also heard that those who are disgruntled have been ganging up to support the even the least of the candidates to see how they can stop me, but I don’t see how they can achieve that. I am confident that that election, when the votes are counted, I will win.

Apart from my acceptability to the electorate, the APGA government in Anambra State is doing exceedingly well. I do not judge the success of a government, based on what armchair critics say. As a member of APGA and someone who has been in the leadership of APGA for over 13years and someone who has been championing APGA programmes, I can tell you that the government of APGA is doing very well for the people of the state. So the governor, being from my party will also act as a boost to me in the election. The governor has traditional critics who don’t like him and those who do not believe that as far as they are not the ones in charge, things are not going on well. I can say that Willie Obiano has surpassed my own expectations in less than two years.

The level of projects being executed in the state and particularly in Awka capital territory and elsewhere will show you that this government is a very serious government, and the governor is thinking about how to make Anambra State a good state. He tackled the issue of security immediately he came in. People thought it was going to be a flash in the pan which will stop after one month and criminality will start, but Anambra has been very peaceful – no kidnapping, no armed robbery and all that. So I don’t see how people will want a party that is doing all these to go down. What will be the alternative? We have everything going for us in this election, Even if PDP and APC were going to contest the election with their strong candidates, we would have defeated them. What I insisted on not allowing to happen was to go into the election with illegitimate candidates, You go into the election with them and you expose the election to further risk of nullification. That is the essence, otherwise we are not afraid of any political party, APGA is a prominent political party and we know we have the structure.

Some people say the Court of Appeal should ordinarily have declared you the winner of that election. So how do you feel going through this process again?

Well, I am still grateful to the Court of Appeal because if you remember, the election tribunal made a joke of our petition at the tribunal, but the Court of Appeal decided to go deeper into the petition and decided to nullify the election and said that the PDP did not hold any primary to select their candidates and that was what put forward this arrangement of conducting another election. For me it’s very painful, but I have to bear the pain. If they had said no at the tribunal, this opportunity would not be here.

That they were able to nullify the election and offer us a second chance is good enough. We will go through it and there is not cost that I will bear in pursuing justice that I will consider too high. If I had considered that charade of 2015 to stand, the psychology of people of Anambra Central Senatorial district would have been so greatly tortured. They were traumatized with the way PDP militarized that election. So many people were badly beaten up and result sheets were carried away brazenly. If they had gone away with that victory, it would have destroyed the interest of people in elections. For the fact that we were able to get this back, you can see the happiness in the faces of people that they stole this thing and they could not get away with it, and they have another day, and we are ready for the election to pay them back in their own bad coin.

So, for me, I ought to have been declared winner because there was no need for a repeat of this election. But for the wisdom of the judges of the Court of Appeal that the nullification should suffice, I accept it. Good enough, it is just about 19 days away, and the extra cost of going for this repeat election should be borne by lovers of genuine democracy.

Can you tell us those things that are dear to you which, when you get to the senate, you will work on?

I said it clearly that I was not averse to Buhari becoming president as a person, but we decided to vote the way we voted because of what our party considered very critical to the survival of Nigeria as a nation, and that critical thing was the promise made by Jonathan to implement the report of the National Conference, which he put together in the first place. The report of that National Conference remains a key to the survival of this country as a nation. Anyone who wishes it away is postponing the dooms day. This country cannot continue to be run in an atmosphere of tension, where there are too many grievances from various parts of the nation. Good leadership requires that a nation should be put on a pedestal of sustainable development and peace. There are too many people who have been cheated. I am known to be championing this cause all the time, the structural imbalance is skewed against the Igbo people of Nigeria because of the war.

This will not last for ever. Nations have fought wars all over the world, America fought wars, many nations in Europe fought wars, and they come out of their wars stronger and things that caused the wars were looked into at the end of the wars, and ways of maintaining sustainable peace became the order of the day, but in Nigeria they refuse to agree that the war has ended. They agree that the war has ended in principle, but the war is still on against the Igbo people of Nigeria. If I have time to state it, there are so many areas begging for attention. So outside the confab reports, the boldest efforts Nigeria has made towards preserving its desired unity where in a dialogue arrangement where there was give and take for all parts of Nigeria. The Igbo were given additional state, increasing their number of state to six, because we presently have five. The issues about local government were also addressed. Local government funds can no longer be shared to the 774 local governments. Money will be shared to the states and the states can create the number of local governments they want.

These were the things we agreed to at the National Conference. We also saw that who becomes the president of Nigeria was a major action in Nigeria anytime we are going to have an election. Everybody wants his own person or tribe’s man to become the president of Nigeria. So we said instead of killing ourselves over who becomes the president of Nigeria, let us have an arrangement where every part of Nigeria will have hope that one day they will ascend the presidency of this country and it was agreed that the presidency should rotate between the north and south and across the geo political zones, and with that type of arrangement, it won’t take time and presidency will reach to places where it had not gotten.

When I get to the senate, we want a Nigeria where there will be equal rights and opportunity for all people of Nigeria, not just for the Igbo people. We will make efforts to close the gap created against the Igbo people. We want equity and fairness. We can easily achieve that through legislation. Every aspect of Nigerian life, you can use legislation to put things in proper perspective, and it will work for everybody. So if I go to the senate, I will pay my primary responsibility to Anambra Central Senatorial district, and I will get everything they are entitled to get as a federal constituency in Nigeria in any form, be it infrastructural development, be it youth empowerment programmes, be it women empowerment programmes, be it education. Anything that it being done at the centre for federal constituencies, that of Anambra Central will come home complete and none will be found wanting. I will be alert to my responsibility. On a second stanza, I will contribute to nation- building; I want to be a part of any group in the senate or the national assembly for that matter that will be championing for a better Nigeria – a Nigeria that every citizen will be proud of. In the senate there are too many progressives from all parts of Nigeria, so the issue of people thinking that the status quo will always remain; even those who think they have the advantage today are aware that it will not be forever. Or if these pressures and agitations keep building in the land, people will be forced to let go some of the things they are holding. So that there will be peace in the land. At the senate I know there are people from the north who are progressive minded and will want Nigeria to move forward.

Nigeria of today is not like the Nigeria of 50, 60 years ago. Even in the north, education has changed things, people have gone to other climes, and have seen how things are done, particularly in the area of civic rights.

I want to help in building a more united Nigeria, a Nigeria where everybody will have confidence in. If we do not achieve that, we are wasting our time, and that is why I said we will address the various problems facing the country. That is why I also said that the only document that has addressed the problem of the country is the report of the national conference, which Jonathan handed over to President Buhari as one of the major handover documents, So we will keep our eyes on that report.

If you win the rerun, you will be the only APGA senator in the senate. How will you feel about such a situation?

Well, this is the only senatorial seat that APGA has a very bright prospect of taking now and I don’t see that to be a problem. I think the people of this zone need a very strong character in the senate. They will say that one APGA senator in Chief Sir Victor Umeh is a large slot, but there is nothing like winner takes all in this matter. If you check all that I have just said about achieving unity at the senate for the good of our people, you will understand that the issue of being from one party or the other in the senate will be drastically reduced. We will begin to see ourselves as brothers and sisters working for the interest of our people.

Dasukigate: Why APGA did not get money from alliance with PDP - Umeh

Immediate past chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Chief Victor Umeh has said, the party did not collect a single kobo to support the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the last presidential election, noting that the support was essentially ideological.

Victor Umeh
Victor Umeh

Speaking against the background of reports that some other political parties including the Social Democratic Party, SDP, and Accord Party, collected N100 million each to support the PDP, Umeh said that nobody collected a kobo on behalf of APGA for the support given the PDP in the last presidential election.

Speaking to newsmen in Lagos, Umeh, the party’s senatorial candidate in the forthcoming Anambra Central re-run election ruled out the participation of the immediate past senator, Uche Ekwunife in the election, noting that she cannot participate in the same election on the platform of two different political parties.

“We didn’t get into that arrangement because of monetary benefit. Not a kobo was given to anybody or APGA. Some people think that APGA, being a robust supporter of President Jonathan more than the SDP and Accord Party, which got N100 million each, then we must have got more, but I am so happy that I didn’t entangle myself in such thing.

“It would have been an opportunity for those who are worried that I am contesting the senatorial election to come and pick me up and dump me at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, cell.”

Affirming the ineligibility of the former senator representing Anambra Central in the forthcoming election, he said: “Having been disqualified through her previous party, crossing over to the All Progressives Congress, APC, would mean that she would be contesting one election on two different platforms if she was allowed to contest.

“This is very absurd and I think that she is wasting her time and therefore, has to get proper legal advice. Whoever advised her that she can jump from PDP to APC and become its candidate and return to the election, has not given her proper advice.

“Assuming that she has that right, the Supreme Court judgment that I explained, has foreclosed that option. There is nothing that can make the APC present her for the election.”

Procured protest in Abuja: PDP mocks APGA over tribunal verdicts

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) berates the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) over its embarrassing resort to calling out paid touts and street urchins to attempt and/or orchestrate a cosmetic protest in Abia against the verdicts of election tribunals.

Olisah Metuh
Olisah Metuh

In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary,  Chief Olisa Metuh, the party said it’s a crass display of shameful desperation that a political party that was roundly defeated in duly conducted elections as well as in election tribunals would resort to attempting an imaginary protest.

The PDP reminded APGA that without apologies, its candidates defeated them their candidates.

Mr. Metuh said “The PDP wishes to remind APGA that our candidates in national and state elections outrightly defeated them and we have no apologies for that. In the same vein, APGA need not be told that in the governorship election, they were comprehensively vanquished by the PDP candidate, who is by all measures, the true choice of the people.

“We wish to inform APGA leaders that their attempt to go into an alliance with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and pledge an unholy mortgage of Abia state treasury and the identity of their party to Bourdillon is inoperable, since the image and identity of APGA has since been lost.”

The PDP reminded APGA that after the demise of its founder, Chief Odimegwu Ojukwu, a former governor who took his place, Peter Obi is now a member of the PDP.

Metuh added ” Nigerians are aware that the weight, strength and financial muscle of APGA was concentrated in Anambra Central Senatorial zone in the elections, only for their candidate, their former National Chairman, (Chief Victor Umeh) to be completely overwhelmed, outmatched, dazed and roundly defeated by the PDP candidate.

“The people of the South East have in many ways, including the 2015 general elections, shown their support and faith in the PDP. Even in Imo state, the only state which was fraudulently taken from the PDP in the zone, the citizens have been groaning and hoping that the judiciary, as the last hope of the common man, would recover their mandate stolen at the governorship election.

“We therefore wish to inform APGA that no amount of blackmail, threats and protest by paid touts and street urchins will override the tenets and principles of democracy; the wishes and aspirations of the people and the sanctity of the judicial process.”

The national leadership of the PDP assures that it is solidly behind the governor, government and people of Abia state in their electoral feats. “We wish to place on record that the Governor of Abia state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, since taking office on May 29, has distinguished himself as one of the best governors in Nigeria as evidenced in his quality of governance; the acceleration of infrastructural development in the state, especially the spirited efforts towards the re-establishment of Aba as one of the foremost commercial hubs of the nation.” Metuh said.

The national leadership urges all their members of the PDP in Abia state and the nation in general to remain steadfast in their commitment towards the party, democracy, unity and stability of the nation, in line with their manifesto and the visions of the founding fathers of their great party.

Stop Living in Fool’s Paradise, APGA Tells Okorocha

  • Your rescue slogan visionless, rudderless – APGA tells Okorocha

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has asked the Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, not to delude himself that the people are happy with his performance.

Okorocha
Okorocha

In a statement issued on Sunday by APGA’s National Director of Publicity, Mr. Ifeanacho Oguejiofor, the party described the governor’s rescue mission slogan as nothing but “visionless and rudderless, that needs to be truly rescued from crass ineptitude and gross maladministration.”

The party said its attention had been drawn to the self-serving and personal glorification interview granted by Okorocha in which he made disparaging and caustic remarks  against APGA, adding that the party was more than just a political association which nobody can wish away, not even the governor.

While cautioning the governor to mind his negative utterances against APGA, the party said its formation  was deep rooted, strong, invincible and made up of a mass movement of true democrats and progressives, which nobody can conquer or destroy.

It said instead of the governor to be eternally grateful to APGA which emancipated him from “his aeon of political bondage, years of unrealised electoral contestation and long gallivanting political  wilderness, which his personal quest for power made him to traverse, he chose to commit sacrilege against the party and poured insult on the sensibilities of those APGA faithful and supporters.

“The party is advising  Okorocha to stop living in fool’s paradise, as his governance anchored on “Rescue Mission” is nothing but visionless and rudderless, that needs to be truly rescued from crass ineptitude and gross maladministration,” it said

The statement said it is a common knowledge that the government of Imo state led by Okorocha lacks the basic managerial skills and ideas on how to govern a state like Imo State, which is richly endowed with both great intellectuals and huge material resources.

“APGA therefore urges him to go to Anambra State for a tutorial on how to govern a modern state and on how to harness the various abundant potentialities in Imo State.

“The  Imo State governor should be told in case he pretends not to be aware, that Imo people are generally disappointed in his awkward style of administration, which caters only to the needs and desires of his in-laws, relations and business partners with his self-deceptive slogan of “my people, my people” instead of “my in-laws, my business partners”, which is a baptismal reference of his kind of governance of Imo State.

“Moreover, the man who is at the helm of affairs in Douglas House who is politically naïve should know that governance is not about how loquacious, garrulous, sophistry and theatrical a governor chooses to be, but how he can positively impact on the welfare and lives of the hoi polloi, which is what the Imo people are in dire need of now, instead of his junketing around.

“He should know that the present national leadership of the party led by Victor Ike Oye, is painstakingly revitalising, reinvigorating and repositioning the party, for a strong presence and quick march to take its due political space and position in the body politic, so as to liberate the marginalised and the downtrodden people of Nigeria.”

Edo APGA woos gov aspirants

BENIN—Ahead of the 2016 governorship election in Edo State, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, has said it had thrown its doors open for credible persons aspiring to contest in the election to join the party.

Elder Godfrey Ehimen, APGA state chairman disclosed this in Benin City at the party’s stakeholders meeting attended by leaders from the three senatorial districts of the state.

He said: “APGA as a ranking national party has opened wide its doors to all aspirants credible enough who may wish to use its platform to contest the 2016 election and with genuine ambition of becoming Edo next governor. “

Elder Ehimen disabused the mindset of those who were yet to identify with the party, saying, “APGA as it is today has been re-strengthened and a force to reckon with in the 2016 governorship election in Edo State.”

APGA members may storm Otuoke over unpaid election largesse

Leaders and members of the All Progressive Grand Alliance across the country are set to embark on a protest to President Goodluck Jonathan’s hometown, Otuoke in Bayelsa State, over the refusal of the President’s aides to release election largesse, promised them before the last presidential poll, to them.

The National Organising Secretary of APGA, Dr. Gbenga Afeni, said this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Monday.

Afeni said the party was promised some amount of money before agreeing to support Jonathan’s re-election, lamenting that the APGA members had yet to receive the promised fund since March 28, when the presidential election took place.

He alleged that the party was shortchanged the same way after supporting Jonathan during the 2011 presidential election, which he won.

The APGA chieftain said at least, 100 members from each state of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory were planning to march to Otuoke even after Jonathan’s exit from Aso Rock to register their displeasure with the breach of agreement by his aides and party leaders.

The statement read, “Arrangements have been concluded to march at least 100 party members from each state of the federation and the FCT to Otuoke, the hometown of President Gooluck Jonathan.

“The purpose of the march is to protest the breach of agreements in 2011 and 2015 general elections. In 2011, APGA supported Jonathan and the PDP to victory and the PDP promised to form a government of national unity inclusive of APGA but the B0T of the PDP, after the election, schemed out APGA from any political appointment.

“Also in 2015, we supported President Jonathan and PDP, but till date, those saddled with the responsibilities of liaising or reaching out to political parties have not shown up by way of appreciation to APGA.”

Afeni said APGA leaders had suffered much embarrassment as their followers were daily demanding their share of the election largesse from them.

APGA clinches 26 LGAs in Anambra State Assembly election

The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared the All Progressive Grand Alliance as winner of 26 seats out of 30 state constituencies in Anambra State in the State Assembly elections held on Saturday.

INEC, therefore, rescheduled the remaining four LGAs in the state for April 18, 2015.

Addressing newsmen in Awka on Sunday, the  Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in the state, Mr. Edwin Nwatarali, listed the affected areas, where the election have been rescheduled as Aniocha Constituencies 1 and 2, Aguata 1, Constituency 1 and Ekwusigo Constituency.

“Out of the 30 constituency seats in the Anambra State House of Assembly, 26 have been declared; and they were all won by APGA,” he said.

He said the Commission had to move the Ekwusigo elections from April 25, which was its initial scheduled date  to April 18 following a recommendation from the INEC headquarters.

According to him, the Ekwusigo Constituency election was cancelled after thugs made away with over 75 per cent of the total electoral materials meant for the Saturday election.

He said for Uga ward 1 in Aguata, the number of voters exceeded the number of registered voters with Permanent Voter Card.

For Aniocha Constituencies 1 and 2, Nwatarali said there was a deliberate attempt not to use card readers in the area despite certifications by technical personnel from INEC confirming the workability of the devices.

“So, we are rejecting the result from these constituencies. Our card reader was working and yet over 80 per cent of accreditation was done manually,” he said, adding that the commission had enough technical personnel to address issues of such nature.

#nigeriadecides: Umeh calls for cancellation of elections in Abia

Aguluzigbo (#Anambra) – Chief Victor Umeh, the National Chairman, All Progressives Grand Alliance (#APGA), has called for the cancellation of the #Abia governorship and the state House of Assembly elections over alleged irregularities.

Victor Umeh

Victor Umeh

Speaking with newsmen at Aguluzigbo in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra after casting his vote on Saturday, Umeh described the entire exercise in Abia as a “sham”.

“From the reports so far gathered, there were no materials on ground and collation officers with result sheets could not be found.

“There are also reports of fake security personnel moving about in the state intimidating people.”

Umeh, who is also the Anambra Central Senatorial candidate of APGA, called for the arrest of some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the alleged irregularities in Abia.

He, however, commended the peaceful conduct of the election in Anambra but noted that the exercise in the state witnessed voter apathy.

Umeh attributed the poor turnout to voters’ discontent with the outcome of March 28 presidential national assembly elections.

“The fraudulent result announced on March 28 elections affected the morale of the people and resulted to voter apathy in today’s election,” Umeh said.

The party boss further observed that the card readers again failed in some areas of the state and urged INEC to reschedule the polls in the affected areas including Nri, Agulu and Ichida.

In a related development, a former governor of the state, Mr Peter Obi, said the card reader deployed for use in many polling units failed.

He urged INEC to do the needful to ensure that his people take part in the exercise. (NAN)

Buhari Will Not Succeed If He Sees Ndigbo As His Enemies, Says Umeh

The National Chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, Chief Victor Umeh, has appealed to the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), not to ostracize people of the South East for not voting massively for him during the March 28 presidential election.

Victor Umeh

Victor Umeh

Umeh, who made the appeal at a press conference in Umuahia, the Abia State capital on Tuesday, said the massive support Ndigbo gave to the candidate if the Peoples Democratic Party and incumbent, President Goodluck Jonathan, though he lost at the poll, was based on the conviction of the people that he [Jonathan] represented hope for their political future.

He said “Buhari should not see Ndigbo as his enemies. We are not against Buhari but were only pursuing our political interest.

“We were looking for somebody who would help Ndigbo recover from the ruins of the civil war. Jonathan convened a national conference and we felt that the report of the conference would address most of the injustices against Ndigbo – that was why we followed him.

“But now that the election is won and lost we should not be seen as enemies. We hope God will still use Buhari to address our many challenges. He should adopt the report of the conference.

“Buhari will not succeed if he fails to address the injustices in Nigeria or treats Ndigbo as his enemies. We will embrace him and support him if he shows concern for our plights.

“What we followed in the last election was the line of hope we saw in Jonathan. We are looking for a way Ndigbo can come back to Nigeria’s political tripod and survive.

“If Buhari had promised to implement the report of the conference, maybe we would have voted for him en mass. But now he should look for a way to accommodate us and give us a sense of belonging in his government”.

Umeh, however, said all hope was not lost for Ndigbo politically as APGA would provide the ethnic group with the opportunity to be re-integrated into national politics.

He, therefore, enjoined the people of South East to help in reviving APGA by voting massively for all its candidates at the April 11 Governorship and House of Assembly elections to serve as a political platform to advance the cause of the Igbo nation.

Political parties sign peace pact in Ekiti

0

Political parties in Ekiti State at a stakeholders meeting on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding to ensure peaceful conduct of the 2015 general elections.

According to the Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, the MoU organised by the Nigeria Police Force in Ado Ekiti is aimed at avoiding scars of agony, makes, discord and enmity after the election.

He expressed worries that politicians these days cared less about the credibility of elections.

“All that matters to them is attainment of political office, somehow and anyhow. More worrisome is the instigation of violence by political office seekers that sometimes lead to loss of lives, physical injuries and destruction of properties.

“It is disheartening that while most of us treasure and pamper our children and wards, we exploit the ignorance, poverty and the myopic view of other people’s children using them to carry arms, cutlasses and various weapons to fight our perceived political opponents. This without mincing words is a sin against humanity and against God.”

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of zone 8, Christopher Dega, at the event stressed the need for the election to be free of rancor, acrimony, I’ll feelings, bad blood and other things that could undermine the credibility of the election.

“The Inspector General of Police (Suleiman Abba) has advised on the need to maintain decorum, exercise caution and restraint as we go into the election. It is important you play the game according to the rules.”

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ekiti, Mr. Sam Olumekun, advised politicians against killing people to occupy public offices.

Governor Ayodele Fayose, at the event assured of purposeful leadership to promote peace.

He said, “Four years is a short time in the life of a man. I won’t muzzle anybody. If you abuse me, I will abuse you back, it is all politics. If you abuse me and I can’t abuse you, I will look for somebody to abuse you.

“For a system to work, the leader must key into it. I will key into the peace process. I will respect and do everything to ensure it works.

“For this election, nobody will muzzle another person. I won’t ask for favour from the police. If my party won an election about six months ago, I do not have to muzzle anybody to win an election. I only need to improve on my chances.”

Meanwhile, thugs on Thursday reportedly stormed some communities in Gbonyin and Irepodun/Ifelodun local governments attacking the supporters of the All Progressives Congress and destroying the billboards and posters of its candidates in the March 28 and April 11 general elections.

The state Publicity Secretary of APC, Taiwo Olatubosun, while alluding to the attack at the stakeholders meeting commended the Police for their quick response to the distress call.

The Ekiti Police Public Relations Officer, Albert Adeyemi, confirmed the attack to our correspondent but said investigation was ongoing.

The APC spokesperson who later issued a statement said thugs armed with guns and machetes stormed Igbemo-Ekiti where they disrupted an ongoing APC ward meeting.

“A car belonging to ward chairman was damaged while several members were attacked in an orgy of violence that lasted several minutes. They came back in the night unleashing fiercer violence, abducting four members in the process.

“They started their raids from Ijan-Ekiti where they shot sporadically to the air. Residents scampered to safety as thugs went about destroying APC candidates’ billboard and posters.

“After Ijan-Ekiti operation, they headed for Iluomoba-Ekiti where APC ward meeting was disrupted. Billboards and posters of APC candidates, including the chairs and tables were destroyed before moving to other communities in Gbonyin to unleash violence,”‎ Olatubosun stated.

According to him, the thugs returned to Igbemo-Ekiti at night in three Hilux vans backed by policemen shooting and destroying the billboards and posters of APC candidates, including those of Rotimi Odu, a member of the House of Assembly seeking reelection.

“They also visited Olatubosun and Odu’s homes. It was during their night visit that these men in military uniform abducted ‎Chief Peter Akinsola a.k.a Pitoro, the senior brother of the Ward Chairman, Mr. Olusola Bello, Mr. Olujimi Ogunade and 22-year-old Adefemi Ojo.

“Investigation has revealed that the abducted men are illegally detained at Fayose’s task force office along Iyin road Ado Ekiti,” Olatubosun added.

Olatubosun said the thugs inflicted a machete wound on one Ajayi Temisoro, while a pharmaceutical shop belonging‎ to Ogunade was destroyed.

He added that a high Chief in the town and one of brothers to Governor Fayose were seen with the thugs encouraging them and pointing to APC members houses.

At a rally held to receive the defectors at Saint Mary Primary school ground in Orlu town, the chairman of the PDP in the state, Mr Nnamdi Anyahie and other stalwarts of the party said the development was an indicator that “Imo State is predominantly a PDP state”.

They believe the defection would also boost the morale of the party in winning elections at all levels in the state come February.

Mr Anyahie maintained that the PDP in the state had put all strategies in place to claim the Governorship seat in the state in the coming elections.

“That is the main reason why members of other parties are identifying with the PDP,” he said.

The incumbent Governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha, is a member of the All Progressives Congress but was elected on the platform of the APGA. He had already started a statewide campaign to seek indigenes support in the governorship election.

He defected to the APC in 2013 along with some other governors that were members of the Peoples Democratic Party.

At a campaign rally on Saturday Governor Okorocha maintained that he remained a candidate to beat in the governorship election that will hold in February, as his good record of performance in the last three and a half years remained a landmark achievement in the history of governance in the state.

He promised that if elected into office for the second time, apart from consolidating the existing programmes, he would provide more industries, factories and job opportunities for the people of the state.

2015: APGA offers Jonathan, Umeh automatic tickets

Ahead of the 2015 general elections, the All Progressives Grand Alliance has offered automatic tickets to President Goodluck Jonathan and Chief Victor Umeh.

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State disclosed this on Saturday in Awka where a mega-rally was to urge Jonathan to seek re-election as President.

Obiano however said the party’s candidates for all other elective positions will be determined through primaries.

While Jonathan has the party’s presidential ticket, Umeh, APGA’s national chairman, will fly the party’s banner in the Anambra Central Senatorial election.

Umeh said APGA has gone into an accord with the Peoples Democratic Party to support Jonathan for the presidential election.

Former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, was absent at the rally. But Obiano said Obi got permission to travel to the United States to attend the World Igbo Congress.

Former Senate President Ken Nnamani and former PDP national women’s leader, Mrs. Josephine Anenih, presented solidarity messages at the rally.

APGA: Okwu blames Umeh over members" defection

ONITSHA—Former chairman of All Progressive Grand Alliance, Chief Maxi Okwu, yesterday blamed the national chairman of the party, Chief Victor Umeh, for the recent defection of four members of the House of Representatives and two lawmakers in the state House of Assembly elected on the platform of the party to Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Speaking exclusively to Vanguard, Okwu, who described the development as very sad for the party, said it was an indictment on Umeh’s leadership after what he described as the obtuse Court of Appeal judgement on June 19, 2014.

He said: “ Every serious party guards jealously its membership, especially people of such high profile membership. You note the extra mile the PDP goes in seeking and trying to reconcile with migrant members.”

Those who defected include former Anambra State governorship aspirant on the platform of APGA and Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Environment, Honourable Uche Ekwunife; Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Capital Market, Honourable Chris Emeka Azubogu and the Deputy Chairman, Media and Public Affairs Committee, Honourable Victor Afam Ogene.

Others are member representing Onitsha North/Onitsha South Federal Constituency, Honorable Cyril Egwuatu and the Chairman, House Committee on Culture, Tourism, Pilgrimages and Religious Matters, Honourable John Olibie.

They were received into the party on Thursday, at Legacy House, Abuja by the National Chairman, Dr Ahmed Muazu and members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

Those who defected had earlier written to the national leadership of the PDP on their intention to join the party and requested for waiver to enable them to contest for any future elective position in the state.

Receiving them, Muazu expressed delight at the return of many of them who were formerly members of the PDP and assured that the returnees and new members will be treated with fairness equity and justice as if they had always been in the PDP.

He said: “I am very delighted. As I have said all the time, for those prodigal children of PDP that have decided to go wandering, that are coming back home, we welcome you.

He assured the new members of the support saying, “You are as old as me and we will treat you accordingly”

He observed that the PDP is the leading party that it is today because of its consistency and transparency.

According to him, “I want to assure you, the party you have chosen to come back to is not just the largest as they say, it is the most Democratic Party. We are the most transparent. In whatever we do, we try to make it clear and that is why we insisted since I came that those of you that a interested in vying for positions, please, the power does not lie in me or in the villa, neither does it lie in any of us in the Working Committee or the governors. It lies in the power of democracy, the power in the power of democracy, the power to elect by the people for themselves for the good of the people,” the party boss said.
