Next Saturday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) will in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, gather to hold the party’s primaries where the flagbearer of the party in the December 5 gubernatorial contest will be elected.
The party’s delegates are presently assessing the capacity of the two frontline aspirants for the post: Mr Timi Alaibe and Mr Timipre Sylva.
While the one is a burnished technocrat who had ran a federal parastatal (the Niger Delta Development Commission–NDDC) most credibly with blazing testimonies of performance, the latter was a former governor of the state and a senior chieftain of the party in the state. The two Timis are the lead contenders in the boat heading for Creek Havens, the seat of power in the state.
The facts on the ground in terms of capacity and competence favour Alaibe. For a state that has continued to lack good governance at the top, the reason the state has failed to really develop and grow, the time for a rebirth is now.
It is not rocket science. It is not mystery. Good governance is possible even in Bayelsa. Another and better Bayelsa is possible. The shortest cut to it is for the delegates to shun retrogressive sentiments and think for the overall future and development of the state and vote for competence and character. The party apparatchik must also look beyond the primaries to the real electoral contest with a view to wining the polls. Who it hands over the ticket to will be a great indication of how far the party can go in the state. But the way to start is ensuring a level playing field for all contestants.
