Defection of PDP leaders worries senator

The Senator representing Bayelsa-Central in the National Assembly, Senator Emmanuel Paulker, on Sunday lamented the loss of some prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party in Bayelsa State to the All Progressives Congress.

Recently, stream of defections had hit the PDP with some heavyweights jumping into the ship of the APC.

Paulker, who spoke at a news conference in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, said though he was not comfortable with their exit, he remained a committed member of the PDP.

The three time Senator said the same scenario played out at the national level of the party last year that resulted in the defeat of the party at the centre.

He, however, said consultations were ongoing to bring back defected members back to the party in the state.

The ranking Senator said, “As a politician, definitely I am not comfortable, especially with regard to the calibre of some people that left my party, the PDP. I am not comfortable especially if you are bitten by a snake, you will jump when you see a lizard cross your path.

“I am saying this because of my  knowledge of what happened to us (PDP) at the centre which began with the exit of some key members and it took us quite sometime to get ourselves together. And before we got ourselves back, election was just around the corner and you all know what happened, it is all history now. You all know that Bayelsa is a PDP state, very soon all efforts will be put in place where chunks of these people will return.”

On his governorship ambition, the Senator said though there was clamour by his constituents for him to run for the race, he was still consulting with stakeholders, saying he would make his intention known to Bayelsans very soon.

He debunked allegation of any hidden acrimony with the Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, saying he would remain a committed party member despite his ambition.
