Nigerians shouldn"t expect miracles - Buhari makes u-turn after election

By Ehi Ekhator, Naija Center News.

After emerging as the President-elect in the just concluded general election, the All Progressives Congress candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) may have bargained more than he can handle as he has started retracting his promises.

Nigerians massively voted for Buhari over his numberous promises. some of the promises made was to transform the economy by tackling insurgency, Boko Haram, corruption, power, unemployment and many more.

While answering questions on BBC after emerging as the winner of the election, Buhari has said Nigerians should not expect miracle as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP had destroyed the country for 16 years.

When asked how he was going hit the terrorist group hard or negotiate with them, Buhari said “Hit them hard with what? Boko Haram, by the 14th of February, according to the government is in control of 14 local government. These are 14 local government out of 774 local governments. If for 5-6 years the Nigerian law enforcement agency including the military could not secure 14 local government, how can i promise miracle when i come?

But with the cooperation of our neighbours, Cameroon, Chad, Niger community, and the commitment we are going to get from the military, i think it will take us much shorter time to deal with insurgency.”

He also said he was not surprised that Jonathan concealed defeat because he was warned by the international community, adding that he is respectful of those countries and their leadership. He said “Well i am not surpised because he had been told by the international community especially united State. I think that he is respecful of those countries and their leaderships. He told him to allow the law of Nigeria take it cause i think he gave them his undertaken and i think he did his best”

Asked how he was going to fulfilled his promises, he said “I think i wouldn’t make a promise if i don’t know how to go about it, we have identified some problems, insecurity in the problem which everybody knows, and then lack of employment and the destruction o the economy by corruption and then, the corruption itself. These are fundamental problems and all Nigeria know this.

We are asking Nigerians for their cooperation, they shouldn’t expect miracles to happen in a couple of months after we take over because the destruction took so many years, 16 years of the ruling party to rule this country. I believe that the country will give us the opportunity to do our best, to pick our priorities and work as hard as we can”

President Jonathan in his numerous interview had said similar statement requesting Nigerians to be patient as things he placed in motion was yet to start yielding positive result.

The APC had said the out-going president was weak as he could not tackle any of the problems Nigeria was facing.

One of the many statements made against the President elect during the campaign was that he may favour the Boko Haram since he was one of those the sect selected to negotiate for them.

A former spokesman for United States Ambassadors to the United Nations, Richard Grenell, warned against voting for Buhari as it may lead to calamity.

In his statement, he said “Western foreign policy observers pre-occupied with the rise of ISIS in the Middle East should wake up to the reality unfolding in Nigeria. Opposition candidate General Buhari wants Sharia law throughout Nigeria. In fact, he wants it everywhere.

“Is this an indication that Buhari supports violence because the end goal of the terrorist attacks throughout Nigeria and Africa is an Islamic state? It is a legitimate question that should be asked by leaders of the Obama administration.

“Boko Haram has pledged its allegiance and support to ISIS. The Northern Nigerian based Islamic terrorist group wants Sharia law throughout the country and beyond. They are also actively terrorising Chad, Niger and Cameroon with their goal of an Islamic state.

“Buhari has also spoken sympathetically about members of the terrorist group Boko Haram, has cautioned against a rush to judgement on its members and has personally been selected by the terrorist group to lead its negotiations with the Government of Nigeria.

“Buhari’s election as Nigeria’s head of state would be a disaster for Africa. It would also signal trouble for the West’s fight against ISIS and terrorism throughout the Middle East.”
