As reactions continue to trail the recent postponement of the 2015 general elections, the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has cautioned against getting the military involved in politics.
Oshiomhole, who spoke during the commencement of the reconstruction and dualisation of the 3.6km 2nd East Circular Road in Benin, warned that dragging the military into the Nigerian political system could be dangerous for the nation’s democracy.
He said shifting the poll by six weeks to address the insurgency in the North-East showed “somebody knew what should be done and failed to do it.”
The governor added, “Those who said they were helpless over Boko Haram have said in six weeks, they would do what they could not do in six years; which means somebody knew what should be done and failed to do it, so that they can postpone elections.
“We are warning them not to drag the military into politics because that could be very dangerous.”
He also stated that he was satisfied with the support received from the international community, condemning the postponement of the elections.
He said, “All around the world, the PDP Federal Government is being denounced; I am happy that the world is with Nigeria. From America, to the UK and Europe, the PDP Federal Government is being denounced for postponing the election.”
On the road infrastructure, the governor explained that the state government was executing a complete redesign and reconstruction, replacing the old seve-meter wide road with 14.5 meters wide dual carriage road.
He added that the road would “no longer be just one road” but a “dual carriage way, complete with street lights and a median with plants and trees.”
Oshiomhole stated, “This is the kind of road you will find anywhere in the world. I believe that the people of this community deserve everything that government can do because we have always won elections in this part of the city.”
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Works, Osarodion Ogie, said the road, which had not been “worked on in the past 20 years, was one of the three main routes connecting Sapele road, through Sakponba to Akpakpava, to major commercial activities.
