President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday night declared that it would be impossible for elections to be won by the opposition movement through propaganda.

He spoke through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, during the Presidential Dinner organized in his honour by the University of Port Harcourt Alumni Association.

Jonathan, who was a member of the university pioneer class of 81, could not attend the dinner as he was reportedly weighed down by Tuesday’s suicide blasts in Kano and Yobe.

The President said his administration created room for the opposition movement to exist as a deliberate attempt to deepen democracy in the country.

He said: “Unlike what many people thought, you know when the opposition tries to make so much noise, one thing we know is that you cannot win elections in Nigeria through propaganda.”

According to the President, his objective in politics was not to remain perpetually in power but to expand the political atmosphere for wider participation.

“We created the political opposition movement. The opposition movements owe their existence and activities to our administration. I can assure you that we are determined to deliver the dividends of fundamentals of democracy in Nigeria,’’ he stated.

He also maintained that neither the ruling Peoples Democratic Party nor the administration is scared about the rising opposition movement in the country.
