Poor oil revenue in Edo communities worries commissioner

The Edo State Commissioner for Transport, Erobosa Omo-ojo, has decried the low level of oil revenue accruing to some oil-producing communities in the state.

The former commissioner for oil and gas stated in Benin that he had carried out investigations on locked-down oil wells in Ovia South-West.

He lamented that the wells were left unattended to by oil companies on the claim that they were low in commercial value.

Omo-ojo stressed that oil-producing communities must carry out need assessments to determine projects suitable for community development, rather than allow oil companies to force the projects on them.

The commissioner, who is also aiming to represent Ovia in the Federal House of Representatives, promised to draw federal attention, which would ensure that shutdown marginal oil wells in the constituency were re-evaluated to resume production.

While noting that Edo was yet to have its fair share of oil wealth, he also stated that communities with non-productive oil wells would get assistance to reclaim their land for alternative use.

Omo-ojo said, “Those oil wells were drilled in the early 70s and 80s by Agip and Total. I still have the data.

“The reasons they gave was that most of those wells were not of commercial value.

“I think Edo State is not getting the fair of oil wealth. How do I know? I have been in that ministry, I have been exposed to papers and I know all the manner of tricks played there.

“I’m equipped enough to ensure that the host communities get their fair share, most of the locked down oil wells in the riverine area are evaluated and those that need to be re-opened are put to production.”
