EDSG serves contravention notice on building owners

Edo State Government under the supervision of Ministry of Housing and Urban Development have served contravention notices to over one hundred and fifty (150) building owners which have failed to comply with the State’s physical planning regulations.

It added that no fewer than fifteen (15) other buildings in the City had been identified as either ‘defective, unfit for habitation or built without the proper building plans or permit’.

The Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Francis Evbuomwan explained that this was part of Government’s plans to enforce the original Benin master plan in a bid to ensure proper planning of the State capital and to put an end to the situation where people developed buildings without proper government building approval which has created problems in town/ urban planning.

Arc. Evbuomwan said that the State Government had realized that the original master plan of the city, with regards to physical planning, urban design and building development had been greatly altered.

He explained that some property owners had erected structures willy-nilly thereby compounding the problem of flooding and erosions in the State. He also noted that illegal conversion of property for other purposes from the originally intended had defaced the aesthetics of the town and disturbed the peace of neighbours and harmony in the environment.

This has led to the demolition of illegal structures in Ugbiyiokho, Upper Ekenwan area of Benin City. The affected structures were illegal as they were erected on natural water ways mapped out by the Edo State Government, crowding the right of ways and found to be blocking the drainage system causing flood to overtake a major street.

It will be recalled that a Task Force on Illegal Structures and Building Control Development was inaugurated March 2014, and empowered by the State Executive Council with the aim to help put order, discipline and restore the City to what it should be; as Benin City and its environs are been ‘defaced, disorganized and rubbished by persons and organizations’.
