Taraba Runoff: PDP Candidate Wins Polling Unit

The gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Taraba state, Arch. Darius Ishaku, has been declared winner of the polling unit where he voted in the runoff election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine the winner of the 2015 governorship election in the state.

Ishaku, who cast his vote at Kofan Sarki polling unit (PU 002), polled 369 votes to defeat the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Aisha Jummai Alhassan, who polled only four votes.

In the same vein, the PDP candidate polled 219 votes in PU 001which is within the same vicinity while the APC candidate polled three votes.

Speaking to journalists after casting his vote about 2:30 pm, Darius expressed optimism of emerging victorious in the election, saying his victory was only delayed but could not be denied.

“Today’s exercise is just a confirmation of the victory the people gave me on April 11, which INEC refused to announce,” he said.

The run-off election held in 218 polling units across 10 local government areas of Donga, Bali, Takum, Karim Lamido, Kurmi, Yorro, Ussa, Wukari and Zing.

The State Returning Officer, Prof Mohammed Kyari, had declared the governorship election in state inconclusive on Monday April 13th on the grounds that the numbers of votes cancelled in the state was more than the margin between the PDP candidate who came tops and the APC candidate who was runner up.

Ishaku had polled 317,198 votes while Senator Alhassan polled 262,386 votes with a difference of 54,812 votes while the total number of cancelled votes stood at 127,125 votes.
