Police uncover human parts ‘depot’ in Ilorin

ILORIN— Men of Kwara State Police Command have discovered abandoned buildings along Lagos‑Ilorin expressway, in the Ilorin International Airport area, suspected to be hideout for criminals dealing in human parts and other nefarious criminal activities.

PoliceSome of the items discovered in the six buildings of about 18 flats, said to be owned by an 85-year‑old socialite, include decomposed human parts, a decomposing headless body, decomposed human feet, snail shells, piece of cloth suspected to be used in strangulating victims, under-wears, NYSC caps, shoes, eye glasses, hand set cover, sandals, among other personal belongings, were found in the abandoned buildings.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Ambrose Aisabor, said this during a press conference yesterday at the Police Headquarters, Ilorin.

Aisabor said the command’s special undercover agents, with information from members of the public, discovered the criminal hideout on Saturday.

According to the state Police Commissioner; “we have made another breakthrough in our efforts to ensure that we chase out criminals from this state and ensure that residents live in peace.”

He added that the identified buildings have inscription of “For Sale” written all over them. They are located near NASFAT praying ground, with a road separating the fenced buildings and the praying ground.”

The police boss, who said no arrest has been made so far, added that the aged socialite, who allegedly owns the place and suspected to be a native of Oro town in Irepodun Local Government Area of the state, was being interrogated.

The Kwara State Police Commissioner, who also paraded one Ganiyu Lawal, suspected to be a robber, said the suspect removed a Toyota Camry, with number plate Lagos APP 645 AN, from where it was parked in Ikorodu, Lagos.

Abuja gives you script to act - Nyako tells Adamawa PDP

ABUJA—Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, yesterday, accused members of the state chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of acting the script prepared by Abuja for them against him and his deputy, James Ngilari

The governor and his deputy are facing impeachment threat from the House of Assembly, a decision which had been halted by the court, but received overwhelming backing by PDP stakeholders, who ended their meeting in Yola on Sunday.

The stakeholders apparently incurred Nyako’s wrath for declaring their support for the House to impeach him and his deputy.

Nyako, yesterday, described the PDP stakeholders as selfish and carried away by their lust to grab power at all cost.

The governor, who spoke through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Sajoh, noted that the resolution reached by the PDP stakeholders was an indication that they were propelled by ulterior motives.

The governor said the plot to unseat him and his deputy was tele-guided by some unseen hands in Abuja, who did not wish the state well.

Nyako noted that with the decision of the stakeholders it was clear that PDP had displayed its usual penchant for forsaking its own.

Northern delegates accuse Confab leadership of hidden agenda

There was mild drama at the ongoing National Conference on Monday when Northern delegates accused the confab leadership of habouring a hidden agenda.

Trouble started when Ishaq Modibo drew the attention of the Conference, under a matter of urgent national importance, to media reports which he said, questioned the integrity of the Conference leadership.

Mr. Modibo said two reports on Daily Trust newspaper indicted the Deputy Chairman, Bolaji Akinyemi, of lobbying Northern delegates in order to smuggle in a demand for a new Constitution in the Conference final report.

He also drew the attention to another publication in a section of the media, alluding that the Conference was trying to adopt a geo-political arrangement in the country.

“Mr. Chairman, I want to urge that the leadership should come out and clear its name from the allegations contained in the newspaper report,” Mr. Modibo said.

But Sergeant Awuse disagreed with Mr. Modibo, saying that the Conference should not be distracted from doing its job because of unfair media reports.

To buttress his point, Mr. Awuse said, “We should avoid grandstanding. Most of those sponsoring these publications are from this Conference. I am pleading that we continue the good work we are doing.

“There are many people who do not support the Conference but there are more people in support of what we are doing here.

“If there is a delegate here who has been approached by the Deputy Chairman, such delegate should rise up and say it. But if there is none, then we should ignore the publication sponsored by people inside this Conference.”

Mike Ahamba, however, disagreed with Mr. Modibo on the need for the Deputy Chairman to address the Conference on account of the allegation in the newspaper report.

“We must always try to act in accordance with what we know. When we started, a lot of people said the Conference will break in down less than two weeks,” he began.

“But they have failed. We have a duty to disappoint them. There is no young person here; even those who are youth here are not very young.

“When people start writing about things that are not true and quote sources that are nonexistent, we should not be pulled into it. If there is anybody that has been lobbied, he should stand up and tell us.

Haruna Yerima, however, insisted that dismissing the newspaper publication would not be in the best interest of the Conference.

He said Mr. Akinyemi has been mentioned and the onus is on him to rise up and clear his name.

Mr. Yerima said, “You either clear your name here and now or you will have morality demands that you take it on yourself to defend your name in this Conference. This is the opportunity for you to clear your name. I am advising you as a patriot, as a friend and as a true Nigerian.”

Given the opposing views on the matter, Mr. Ahamba moved a motion to invite those who were lobbied to speak up publicly.

This was supported by Ken Nnamani who argued that it was necessary for the Conference Vice Chairman to clear his name.

He said, “Whereas God gave us two ears to hear two sides of the story, I hereby move that the Vice Chairman should clear his name from the allegation made against him in the media report.”

Responding, Mr. Akinyemi said, “Since the beginning of this Conference, whenever I find controversies arising, I have always tried to reach out to people on both divides to resolve them.”

We have an issue coming up which has to do with the modality for implementing the outcome of this Conference.

“I approached those who say they want to write a new Constitution. I also approached those who kick against the writing of a new constitution. I had approached Ibrahim Kumasi, who is the leader of the Northern delegates.

“And I said to them, I have spoken to the people who say they want us to write a new Constitution and those who say we don’t need a new constitution. I had told him we need to build a consensus.”

Mr. Akinyemi argued that he was merely trying to build bridges between the two groups in a bid to create a consensus when the matter came up for debate on the floor.

He listed some of those he approached as Iyorchia Ayu, Mr. Kumasi, among others.

Ibrahim Ida argued that two issues where involved in the controversy, saying one had to do with a document which he showed to the Conference.

He explained that what was contained in the document were some of the things already rejected by the Conference.

He warned that anybody propagating a report that claims to be an agreement made by the Conference was trying to scuttle the entire process.

He said, “Mr. Chairman, it is even carrying the logo of the Conference. It is now an opportunity for the leadership to come out before the world and disown this document. I believe this is the time for this Conference to come and disown this document.”

The Conference Chairman, Idris Kutigi, said he has not seen the document referred to.

“I know nothing about this. I have not seen this before,” he said.

Since the name of Mr. Kumasi was mentioned in the newspaper publication, he was asked to stand up and clear the air on the matter.

Speaking, Mr. Kumasi explained how the Deputy Chairman had sent a note inviting him for a meeting with some persons.

He told the Conference that he accepted to attend the meeting but noted that since Mondays were his regular fasting days, he opted to send some delegates to represent him.

He named some of the delegates he sent to attend the meeting to include Iyorchia Ayu, Jerry Gana, among others.

On the final note, Mr. Kumasi said, “Raymond Dokpesi has been organising meetings among Northern and Southern delegates. I was told that a new constitution has been written.

“Later, Dokpesi came over to me and handed to me the document and from that day, the Northern delegates have not attended the meeting. The document has the logo of the Conference and even has the name of the new state to be created.

“I wanted to meet the Northern delegates but I found this published in the Daily Trust today.”

When Mr. Dokpesi rose to address the Conference on issue, he agreed that he was involved in the activities of the National Consensus Building Group headed by Ibrahim Gambari.

He said the objective of the group was to close the gaps in the decisions taken by delegates at the Conference, adding that membership was extended to as many members as possible.

Mr. Dokpesi said right from the outset there were fears that there would be problem in achieving consensus on some of the reports, saying that leaders of the geo-political zones nominated three delegates to join the Gambari-led group.

According to him, during the first meeting, the group tried to harmonize the position on the report of the Committee on National Security.

He said the group agreed that there was need for a multi-tier policing in the country, adding that five other reports of the Conference were considered.

“Any person that is honest will say that all the reports of the committees are embedded in that report as well as the concerns of the all the groups,” Mr. Dokpesi said.

He noted that Mr. Yadudu was not nominated to join the group but he came into the meeting, adding that the document prepared was merely a working document covering all the issues discussed at the Conference.

Mr. Dokpesi continued, “I want to aver that the leadership of this Conference has no hand in this document. There is nobody who does not know that what we have is a working document and not the decision of the leadership.”

After Mr. Dokpesi’s contribution, Mr. Kutigi said, “It is now clear, that the leadership of this Conference is not aware of the report.

“We know nothing about the technical committee. If you want to do anything for yourself, you are free but don’t bring us into it.”

Lai Mohammed replies Fani-Kayode says he lied on alleged comments by party on Boko Haram

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode to retract his comment alleging that the APC, through its National Publicity Secretary Lai Mohammed, condemned the Federal Government for proscribing the terror group Boko Haram or face a legal action.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said at no time did it issue a statement condemning the proscription of Boko Haram, and challenged Mr. Fani-Kayode to produce such a statement if he was so sure the APC issue it.

Femi Fani-Kayode and Alhaji Lai Mohammed

It quoted Alhaji Lai Mohammed as saying: ”I have caused my attorneys to formally write both Fani-Kayode and Channel television, where he made his allegation, to retract the statement and apologize, failing which I will sue for defamation of character.”

”Our position on Boko Haram has been well articulated for anyone who cares to know, but at no time did we condemn the government for proscribing it. When the state of emergency was declared on three northern states, we criticized it and we stand by that. But we did not condemn the proscription of Boko Haram. We are not Boko Haram sympathizers and we cannot be under any circumstance,” APC said.

The party also condemned Mr. Fani-Kayode’s description of Boko Haram as the armed wing of the APC, saying the statement is most irresponsible, uncharitable and without basis.

”Equally irresponsible and condemnable is Mr. Fani-Kayode’s deliberate distortion of statements made in the past by Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to mean that he or his party is a sympathizer of Boko Haram,” the party said.

It said Mr. Fani-Kayode’s latter day castigation of opposition politicians, after he returned to his vomit and repudiated all the damaging statements he made publicly in the past about the PDP and the Jonathan Administration, is not based on any altruistic considerations.

”It is common knowledge that Mr. Fani-Kayode has been charged by the Federal Government with money laundering. The trial is almost ending, and he knows he faces a certain jail term if convicted.

”It is therefore not impossible that Mr. Fani-Kayode may be seeking to ingratiate himself to the FG by using various media platforms to destroy the APC through accusing its leaders of being Boko Haram sponsors or that the party is bent on fielding a Muslim/Muslim ticket in next year’s presidential elections.

”Unfortunately, in his eagerness to please the FG and cut a deal to avoid going to jail, he has resorted to pathological lies aimed at calling the dog a bad name in order to hang it. Whatever evidence he has to prove that our party is a sponsor of Boko Haram, he should be prepared to tender such in court,” APC said.

Soldiers arrest man who actively participated in abduction of Chibok girls

Security forces have bust a Boko Haram intelligence cell headed by a businessman, Babuji Ya’ari, who participated actively in the abduction of over 200 school girls in Chibok in April, 2014.

Ya’ari who is also a member of the Youth Vigilante Group popularly known as Civilian JTF which he used as cover while remaining an active terrorist, also spearheaded the murder of the Emir of Gwoza.

A statement by the Director, Defense Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade in Abuja on Monday, said the suspect’s main role in the group was to spy and gather information for the terrorists group.

“Babuji has been coordinating several deadly attacks in Maiduguri since 2011, including the daring attacks on Customs and military locations as well as the planting of IEDs in several locations in the town,” it said.

Olukolade said the arrest of the businessman who is known to deal in tricycles, has also yielded some vital information and facilitated the arrest of other members of the terrorists’ intelligence cell who are women.

He stated that one of them, Hafsat Bako had earlier escaped to Gombe State to avoid suspicion but was tracked and arrested.

According to him, prior to her arrest, Bako coordinated the payment of other operatives on the payroll of the group, adding that in her confession, she disclosed that a minimum of N10,000 is paid to each operative depending on the enormity of his task.

Olukolade said, “Another female suspect named Haj Kaka who doubles as an armourer and a spy for the terrorists group has also been arrested.

“Until their arrest, all the suspects actively operated a terrorists’ intelligence cell in collaboration with others still at large.”

In another development, troops deployed in Goniri, Yobe State, had an encounter with terrorists, resulting in casualties on both sides after the attack was successfully repelled.

Fight for democracy - Oshiomhole tells Oyegun

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State says the election of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a show of confidence in his ability to take the party to the next level, urging him to do everything possible, as the first chairman of the party, to protect the nation’s democracy.

Oshiomhole Ize-Iyamu Oshiomhole

Speaking the National Chairman and some APC chieftains paid him a visit in his office in Benin City, last Friday, Oshiomhole said “history is on your side as the first elected substantive chairman of our great party”.

He said: “You were a governor before me and you are assuming office at a very delicate period in our national political life not only in terms of the challenges of a new party seeking power at various levels of government including Federal but also at a time when there seems to be a lot of tension in the country and clear frightening security challenges.

“Politics by its very nature generates heat and my leader, God will give you the wisdom to be able to raise the voice of APC in a way that reflects our collective consciousness about the will of the security of the country and yet engage in robust partisan contestations for power.

According to him, “no one appreciates the importance of democracy more than you. As a governor who labored hard to persuade voters to vote for you and you got elected, your tenure was cut short by forces beyond your control and not democratic process and so drawing from your own life experience, I am sure APC will play its role of protecting democracy.”

Oshiomhole said: “I am happy to hear from you that you have already reached out to people who for one reason or the other have feelings that need to be managed. It’s something that should be sustained until everyone is sufficiently able to accept the fact that we have had a congress and we should put it behind us.”

He noted “We have the fortune of having two out of the four contestants which is also a statement about the quality of leaders that we have in our state. It is also on record to say that it was our own son Chief Tom Ikimi, who had the privilege of managing these four political parties without clear cut rules to get all of them to accept to come together to form a mega party.

“I am sure when the history of the party would be written, these pioneering efforts, these robust contributions would be acknowledged. When your person is found to be on the right side of history you would want to claim ownership of him. Our state would be remembered as having contributed leaders that helped to make APC a reality.”

Oshiomhole assured “We would continue to work with him as our leader here and I know working with him, you will be able to draw heavily from his own wealth of experience having been a National Chairman to help you to pilot this big family known as APC.

“Let me assure you that in Edo State, we are committed to giving you all the support you need to succeed. We will continue to work for peace, work for reconciliation and the unity of this party.”

He said, “I know you are also aware of the fracas in the House of Assembly where four Lawmakers chose to be in collision with the law refusing court orders and even boasting that they will never comply with the court order.

“Every right thinking Edo person should appeal to everyone to obey the law particularly even as we speak, we are protected by the same court. The Court Injunction says ‘don’t declare our seats vacant’ and the House obeys it and another court injunction says ‘you are suspended’ and you disobey it because you belong to a Federal ruling party. We can’t go on like that. Be assured that I will do whatever I can to ensure that the rule of law prevails in Edo State.”

Earlier, the National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, Chief John Odigie Oyegun commended the governor for maintaining neutrality between the two contestants from Edo State.

He said, “I congratulate you for the very able way you were able to pilot the affairs and for the help you gave to me which I am also sure you extended to the other party. I want to say that we in Edo State have been done a great honor. One of us has been chosen as the very first elected chairman of the APC.

The Chairman noted that the healing process of the party is already under way and “I want to pray and offer myself in my new capacity that whatever can be done to bring total peace and harmony, total acceptance to the party in Edo State will be done. We are now in the eye of the storm. You have given us the responsibility to guide the party to victory.

“The whole nation now expects a lot from the party in Edo State so it is my hope and prayer that in the days ahead, we will be able to build the kind of movement in Edo State that will make people outside Edo State say that we entrusted them with national leadership and they are not letting us down” he said.

Fani-Kayode: I never question Atiku who changed four parties within five years

APC is like a beautiful woman that you saw, and you look at her, you feel attracted to her, you say what, that’s a beautiful woman, let me stay close to her, it provides alternative. You get close to the woman, you touch her hair, she smiles at you, you see her teeth and suddenly you smell her breath and her breath is absolutely awful and it almost causes you to faint. You look at her hands, you see blood on her hands, you find that she has questions to answer, you say goodness me, this is not what i banked for, i really looked at it from the outside

By Ehi Ekhator, Naija Center News

The former minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has said that Nigeria is a troubled Nation, adding that Nigerians need to sit and recognise what’s going on in the country.

Chief Fani-Kayode Chief Fani-Kayode

He said that Nigeria is at war and urged Nigerians to join hands with the government and fight against the Islamist fundamentalist instead of fighting government.

He disclosed these while answering questions from Channel TV on Monday morning.

He said “Let me say we are a troubled nation and a lot of things are happening in which we need to look at very carefully and need to sit up and recognized what is really going on. A few days ago we heard people killed in Bauchi, a few days before we heard 200 people killed in Southern Kaduna and yesterday we heard 53 people in the church, the church was locked up and the community was attacked by Boko Haram and then the church was burned to the ground along with a number of houses. It is very clear to me when you look at all these things that Nigeria is a nation at war and we need to be able to do something about this and reconize the fact that when we are at war, we don’t start fighting the government of the day, what you do is try to join forces with all relevant individuals, fight the militant, fight the insurgency and move the country forward.

”And that is where i think we are, we are at war, a nation of war. This war is not between Christians and Muslims, it is between those that believe in Islamic fundamentalist state and the creation of it. Islamic fundamentalist on one hand against the rest of us. That’s Christians and Muslims together and everybody else and we need to recognize that; and those wars is being fought in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and throughout the middle east and in Syria today. In those countries, it’s the Muslims themselves, the moderate Muslims that are fighting the Islamic fundamentalist with vigour and strength and holding them back and i think it is important that we need to recognize this in this country that every right thinking person whetehr you are a christian or a muslim, you need to join hands and fight the Taliban elements and Al Qaeda element and the Islamic fundamentalist and make sure they do not make the necessary gains that they have been making for the last few years.’

Fani Kayode warned that if Nigeria doesn’t understand the gravity of what’s going on the country, if the necessary steps are not taken, Boko Haram could take over the country capital just like ISIS is planning to take over Bagdad.

He said ”If you look at what’s happening in Iraq, the advances of ISIS, they have managed to take over most of the country, they are now on their way to Bagdad, the state capital. If we are not careful, if we don’t take this matter seriously, if we don’t become to understand the gravity of  of the situation we are facing in this country, you may well find that sooner or later, you may have such advances been made on Abuja by Islamist fundamentalist and Boko Haram.

Fani said that the primary motive of the Islamic fundamentalist is to establish an Islamic state or to fight against being ruled by a Christian or a moderate Muslim. He added that there is no basics of negotiation, stressing that the only way to end the insurgency is to fight them and wipe them out of the country.

He said that they could burn down the country until one of them is running the country or there is an Islamic State. He gives option to Nigerians that they either stay and get killed or join forces with relevant authorities and fight them. Suggesting an alternative way to fight the insurgency, the former minister stressed that APC is tainted therefore, it can’t be an alternative.

Fani-Kayode explained that though, Boko Haram has support from Taliban and Al Queda,  the group also has a lot of people within the country who according to him, ”have some levels of sympathy for the dreaded group”.

He said ” It is obvious that Hoko Haram has internal support, Al Qaeda and so on and so forth, It is also obvious that Boko Haram has a lot of people in this country who has some level of sympathy for them. There are some people in this county that believes that it suit their purpose for Boko haram to kill people in order to discredit the government, to destabilize the country and in order to bring the government down, what we nee to understand is that each time the bomb goes of anywhere, some people actually rejoice. As far as i am concerned those people that rejoice simply because they feel that this is evidence that the government is not doing its job, those people are just as culpable as people that put those bombs there and cause them to detonate and slit the throat of children and adult people.

Fani Kayode stressed that the All Progressives Congress, APC, is not an alternative as many of its members have sympathy for the dreaded Boko Haram. He reminded Nigerians that in 2011, certain people made threat that if power was not returned to the North, they would make Nigeria ungovernable .

He said ”In 2011, we have to remember element within the opposition actually came out and said that if the presidency did not return to the north, certain people will make this country ungovernable.  Three or four years later, we have seen evidence of that, we have seen that unfolding in this country, There is an attempt to make this country ungovernable, 100 of our citizens are being killed everyday, and that’s for me will give you some level of insight about what’s really going on here.

Recalling a comment made by a former head of State, now a chieftain of All Progressives Congress, APC, Gen. Buhari, last year, Fani Kayode said ”Buhari said Boko Haram should be granted amnesty, should be treated with same way like Niger Delta militant, that’s to say that they should be sent abroad, given money, paid monthly salary as so on and so forth, and that they should not be killed. That’s very interesting to me because iw ould have thought that after they ahve killed more than 15,000 of our citizens, At that point in time, this is not the sort of thing anybody of that statue ought to be saying.

Fani-Kayode added ” in 2001, right before the insurgency started, the same gentleman said that, in this country, he would spread Sharia, which is the cardinal principle of the Boko Haram philosophy, he will spread it throughout Nigeria. That was his stated objective as far back that time, he tallies with the objective of Boko Haram. Again he said in 2011, Boko Haram should vote only for those that would protect their interests. Again in 2011, he said, why should Christians should be bother when Muslims chop of their limbs after all it’s all Muslims affair and these issues gave course to concern”

Without stopping there, Fani-Kayode dragged his rope to Senator Ndume who according to him, due to his statements, has some issues to clarify. He said Senator Ndume has strong links, and know so much about Boko Haram.

Fani also took his whip to some members of the Peoples Democratic Party. He mentioned of the former National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Tukur when he described Boko Haram as justice fighters.

He stressed that anybody that has inside knowledge, or anybody that sympathizes or act as an intermediary or spokesman or as a defender of Boko Haram, being PDP or APC should be as an enemy of the country.

He added ”We only want to have good Christians, good Muslims that believes in a circular state that rejects the concept of Islamic Fundamentalist state, that rejects the concept of the idea that they cannot live or abide under a Christian President. We have been living together for so many years and we cannot allow these people to divide us”

Fani-Kayode agrees that politicians from both parties are far too resolved about the issue of Boko Haram, he urged every politicians should come out courageously should come out and condemn Boko haram every single day.

He said ”what i found is that, most of the opposition politicians spend their time criticizing the government not criticizing Boko Haram. As far as i am concerned, criticize the government as much as you like, that’s our right and that’s what we are supposed to do. You must understand that the enemy is not the government, the enemy is Boko Haram, and those that are supporting them covertly, those that are behind them, those that are encouraging them and those that are saying they shouldn’t be proscribed, those that are saying that they should be treated with fairness, these are people that slit the throat of children, that adopt little girls, that steal them from their schools, they are not human beings they are beat, and anyone who has good things to say about them has to be suspects.”

Fani Kayode debunked the believe that he moved back to PDP that so as to make the federal government dropped the EFCC case he has. He advised the Federal Government not to drop his case as he has been fighting it for five years and it will be so over.

He said ”I am accountable to my conscience and to God and to nobody else, and those around me that matters to me. God knows the reasons why i went to the APC in the first place, i spent almost a year there, and i left after one year haven’t come across what i came across there. I was moved by my passion and my conviction for this country for rightecousness and for truth, and i did the right and proper thing to retrace my step to go back to the family i came from simply because it was clear to me that APC was not clear to handle power in this country. You talk about charges and cases, no charges have been drooped, and i would prefer not dropped because we are almost at the end of that case, it has been going on for five years, nobody has discussed it, we have been in court last week, and we’ll be in court again too, and i am glad to be there, it has nothing to do with that.

I joined the APC in February, i declared the APC before the party was even registered. People said why would you declare for the party that ahven’t be registered, and i said it was an act of faith. I joined formerly in my ward in Ife earlier this year, haven’t been with them for one year, i realized i cannot operate in a two man cult, where people are not accepted for who they are, where you cannot have a different opinion from the leaders and i chose to leave, that’s my right and that’s my prerogative. I will continue to leave any group of people that i am not comfortable with because i don’t operate in cult. I have never been a member of a cult.

”APC is like a beautiful woman that you saw, and you look at her, you feel attracted to her, you say what, that’s a beautiful woman, let me stay close to her, it provides alternative. You get close to the woman, you touch her hair, she smiles at you, you see her teeth and suddenly you smell her breath and her breath is absolutely awful and it almost causes you to faint. You look at her hands, you see blood on her hands, you find that she has questions to answer, you say goodness me, this is not what i banked for, i really looked at it from the outside. I have been in the inside, regardless of what anybody said, i am not happy with what i said and i exercise my right to move away.

”I never question somebody like the former vice president, Atiku who changed party four times in a space of five years, i have never question Buhari, i have never question Tinubu, i never question so many others that chose to leave their other parties to join other parties, i have always assume the best in people and why should anybody questions my own motives and why should anybody lay expression on my own character. IT really doesn’t matter what anybody think, the most important thing is that we join hands to try our bests that those that seek to destabilize this country for political reasons in order to get this sudden Christian out of power at the centre will fail in their endeavour.

Fani-Kayode stressed that he was not afraid of the people he mentioned as he didn’t accuse anyone but only mention quotes and it’s perfectly reasonable within the law.

I Apologise To All Those I Offended In Office – Ex Imo State Gov, Ohakim

The immediate past governor of Imo State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim has asked for forgiveness from all those he offended during his tenure as governor of the state.

Ohakim made the appeal yesterday while playing host to the people of Okigwe who called on him at his country home.

According to Ohakim, those he offended included the sacked school teachers verified by the state government, the operators of illegal shanties on the major roads in the state, the banned commercial motorcycle riders among others.

He said he thought he was doing the right thing but expressed surprise that during the campaign for governorship election in the state in 2011, the incumbent governor used it against him to get himself into power.

On the purported flogging of a clergy man, the former governor maintained that his political detractors used it as a campaign strategy to edge him out of the Government House, saying he never assaulted any clergy, just as he added that he has been vindicated by the said victim.

“I apologise to the street traders, the school teachers, about 44 of them who underwent a verification excercise, even though it is sad that most of them are campaigning for the present government, the Okada riders who thought I have offended them; I thought I was doing the right thing,” Ohakim begged.

While deliberating on his next political ambition, Ohakim stated that it would be his desire to complete his tenure as provided by the constitution, but noted that his party’s decision was paramount as he promised to abide by any decision taken by his party.

“I will seek the authorisation of my party in line with the constitution to continue my tenure, but that does not mean I will not abide by my party’s decision; I am not desperate; my ambition is to fly my party’s flag”.

I will be a better human being now , those party members who voted for me, it is only me that can assuage their suffering, I have not declared but only consulting” Ohakim stated.

ICPC Can Investigate, Prosecute Without Petitions – Appeal Court

The Court of Appeal sitting in Makurdi, Benue State, has held that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has the powers to investigate and prosecute cases without first receiving petitions.

ICPC

The ruling is sequel to an appeal filed by the ICPC on June 21, 2011, which asked the appellate court to set aside the judgment of a Nasarawa State High Court that discharged and acquitted the chairman of Toto local government area of the state and the director of finance of the council over alleged involvement in corrupt practices.

Justice I. A Ramalan (now retired) had, in his verdict on May 20, 2008, discharged and acquitted the accused persons on “11-count charge of conspiracy to inflate prices of stationery and furnishing of false information, contrary to sections 26[1][c]; 22[3]; 19; and 16 of the ICPC Act”.

But the certified true copy of the Court of Appeal’s judgment delivered on May 2, 2014, and made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday, reversed the judgment of the lower court and ruled in favour of the ICPC.

In the judgment delivered by a justice of the Court of Appeal, Obande Ogbuinya, the appellate court cited sections 6[a] and 27[3] of ICPC Act and held that “a petition is just a guide and it is not ultra vires the powers of the commission to investigate and prosecute offences outside a petition or initiate investigations and prosecutions without a petition”.

We don’t know where Chibok girls are – US

The United States said on Friday it had decreased its surveillance flights in the search for the about 219 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram, but added that the overall effort was unchanged due to more flights by other countries.

Chibok girls Chibok girls

It stated that it had no idea of the location of the girls, noting however that there is no letup in the efforts to locate and rescue them.

“We don’t have any better idea today than we did before about where these girls are, but there’s been no letup of the effort itself,” Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby told reporters, according to Reuters.

Kirby said the same level of effort was being sustained now through international involvement.

A US defence official speaking on condition of anonymity said American flights had been reduced only after a body of intelligence had been gathered and that the cuts had been offset by the British and the French support.

Kirby denied a suggestion that US flights over Nigeria had been reduced to accommodate increased US surveillance over Iraq, where Washington is flying unmanned and manned aircraft to gather intelligence about Sunni insurgents.

He said some of the resources that were being used in Nigeria had been diverted from other missions in Africa and could now be used elsewhere on the continent.

Officials declined to say how long heightened U.S. surveillance over Nigeria had lasted.

Asked whether it was just a week or two, the defence official said, “No. We were building this baseline for a good period of time.”

US surveillance flights over Nigeria were now intermittent, the source said.

US military personnel are in Abuja helping to coordinate the effort, and some 80 others were sent to Chad in May to support the surveillance operation.

Chad is northeast of Nigeria and borders the area in which Boko Haram is known to operate.

In the last month, US officials had played down expectations about a swift rescue of the girls and stressed the limitations of intelligence from surveillance flights.

One US official voiced concerns that Boko Haram might have booby-trapped areas where the girls could be held, and there had been reports that they might have been split up into groups that were not being held in one place.

The defence official said surveillance alone would not lead to a resolution. “It will take the Nigerian piece of the equation with their own sources and human intelligence coupled with the other forms to really understand the picture,” he noted.

In an opinion piece in the Washington Post on Friday, President Goodluck Jonathan said his government and security services had “spared no resources, have not stopped and will not stop until the girls are returned home.”

Apapa Explosion Was Terror Attack - US

The United States of America (USA) on Friday told President Goodluck Jonathan that the Thursday explosion in the Apapa area of Lagos State could actually be attributed to the activities of a terrorist gang.

The US intelligence experts in Lagos revealed this to President Jonathan in classified report, which our Correspondent sighted, at the presidential wing of the Lagos Airport.

The U.S. said it had already warned its citizens of a planned suicide attack in Lagos.

“ There is plan by terrorists to launch a deadly attack on one or two densely populated spots in Lagos. Sheraton Hotels near Lagos, Nigeria’s main commercial hub which attracts many foreign business people and which so far has been spared by the country’s violent Islamist militants, may have been slated as one of the targets,” it said.

A security source also told our Correspondent that President Jonathan had been briefed about the true position of the Apapa blast which happened on Thursday.

The source said Jonathan who had to cut short his trip for the African Union (AU) Head of Governments meeting in Equitorial Guinea, made a brief stop in Lagos to get briefing on the Thursday blast at Apapa.

It was gathered that the Nigerian leader was told by the U.S. operatives that a warning to this effect had been issued since April.

It was also confirmed that, seven persons were confirmed dead on the spot after the blast occurred. The group also told Jonathan that investigation after the blast had revealed that a suspected female suicide bomber might have carried out the attack.

“We were reliably informed that a lady dressed in Hijab had fled the scene after perhaps detonating the IED and entered a car that was parked strategically at Allen Junction. Minutes after the first explosion occurred, the second one happened at that same junction,” U.S. operatives said.

Speaking to newsmen after the incident, the Lagos State Police Spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, would rather attribute the explosion to a tanker conveying petrol. “There is nothing whatsoever suggesting that it was a bomb explosion, it was a tanker loaded with fuel that burst into flames,” Braide said. “Policemen are on ground there now and we cannot yet ascertain the casualty figures. But everything is under control.”

Also speaking, Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr. Kehinde Adebayo, who responded on behalf of the Managing Director, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed to journalists that the loud noise accompanied by the fire explosion is “from a tanker loaded with fuel.”

Similarly, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), also attributed the cause of the fire to a gas cylinder explosion. Ibrahim Farinloye, NEMA Spokesperson, South-West, said the explosion occurred at 26 Creek Road, Apapa at about 9:15 p.m.

“People were reported to be filling gas into the cylinder before it exploded,” Farinloye said in a text message.

The Apapa explosion happened less that eight hours a blast killed more than 20 persons at a shopping plaza in Abuja.

INEC lacks financial capacity to conduct 2015 election - Reps

The House of Representatives on Sunday raised the alarm that the much-expected 2015 general elections would be in jeopardy if no urgent steps were taken to address the financial predicament besetting the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Tambuwal and the others Tambuwal and the others

The lower chamber said through its Committee on Electoral Matters that INEC, as a matter of fact, had no money to conduct the 2015 polls because the Federal Government had not funded the commission.

The committee chairman, Mr. Jerry Manwe, told The PUNCH that the electoral commission needed N120bn to conduct the election but that it had less than half of the sum.

Manwe said, “Out of the N120bn that INEC proposed, only N45bn was given to the commission by government. It means that the commission is short of a huge difference of N75bn.

“We have alerted the Ministry of Finance and the Budget Office of the Federation; we as a committee, we cannot initiate a supplementary budget for INEC.

“As it stands, INEC has no money to conduct the elections. If they are not able to get supplementary appropriation, there will be serious problems.”

The lawmaker said time was already running out on the commission to get some of its programmes for the election on track.

He noted that that funding challenges could mar the elections, expressing concern that while everyone was already looking forward to the election, questions were not asked about the financial capacity of INEC to deliver.

He stressed that his committee had come to the conclusion that a supplementary budget for INEC could be the only way out, following a series of interface with the INEC chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, and independent investigations conducted by the committee.

“As the Committee on Electoral Matters, our work is to alert the relevant authorities to our findings and the implications for the 2015 elections,” Manwe explained.

He however said he was hopeful that the Federal Government would address the issue with a supplementary budget in the weeks ahead.

“We are waiting to see what happens as we enter July, but it is important to say that, ‘this is the situation for now’”, he added.

Curiously, Jega had barely three weeks ago appeared before the House Committee on Reform of Government Institutions on June 9 and gave the assurance that preparations for the polls were on course.

“We give assurance that preparations by INEC for the 2015 general elections are proceeding in earnest,” he stated.

But, he also admitted that the commission’s immediate challenges included “insecurity, funding, attitude of the political class, apathetic and inactive citizenry, delay in amendment to the legal framework; completion of the review of electoral constituencies and polling units.”

INEC could not respond to the Reps’disclosure on Sunday as efforts to reach the spokesman for Jega, Mr. Kayode Idowu, failed.

Several calls to Idowu’s mobile were not answered and he did not respond to text messages sent to him on the matter.

Nothing Shocks Again

THE body counts from the war against terrorism are getting abnormal. Whether the losses are on the part of the security agencies or mere standbys, like school children, it is becoming clearer .that government needs to do more.

Terrorists may do all they can to make the country unsafe, but government has the responsibility to .not only protect us, it has to make us feel safe.

What we find more absurd is that the seasonal killings, their brutality, which the killers have .made their trademark, no longer shock.

The condemnations have thinned. We have moved on with obviously more important matters like who becomes whatever in 2015. We forget the killings quickly in order to sustain the .pretence that the union is in sane state.

Nigeria has lost thousands of lives to terrorists. Neither the numbers, nor those killed, appears to be important. Lives, no longer seem to count, they have become numbers, ordinary statistics, .kept for the records.

Which society watches its members decimated in this manner without being shocked into action? How can a society be so unfeeling when it cannot protect its young, its future?

Nigeria has failed to tell terrorists in succinct terms, that their actions would be punished. There .are no examples to deter them.

The choice of soft targets like schools, markets, entertainment centres and churches has become a signature of these attacks. The terrorists want attention, and bigger headlines. Our security agencies need to do more. Failure of intelligence and armed actions against terrorists is .not as bad as the unwillingness of many top Nigerians who can exert pressure on them to do so.

We cannot bring terrorists to account when we place personal and political considerations above millions of lives at risk. The lives at risk could be anyone’s as the indiscriminate attacks .have proved.

The war against terrorists can be won when we are pulling together. Any group that can murder so mindlessly, including children, is a risk to everyone, even to its avowed supporters.

Chibok burns again; as gunmen kill 51, burn Churches, houses

MAIDUGURI—Gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram Islamic sect, yesterday, attacked some communities in Chibok and Biu local government areas of Borno State, killing no fewer than 51 people. Those killed were mostly Christian worshippers. Five churches including Cocin, EYN and Deeper Life Bible Church in Kwada village, about 10 kilometres from Chibok were also burnt down when the gunmen laid ambush on them during church service.

File Photo: A car burns at the scene of a bomb explosion at St. Theresa Catholic Church at Madalla, Suleja, on December 25, 2011.

The attacks were carried out on a day the Federal Government said last week’s bomb attack on Abuja was meant to intimidate the government and that it is a struggle for power.

It was in Chibok town that 276 female students of Government Girls Secondary School were abducted by terrorists on April 14 this year.

Boko Haram had two weeks ago written to Chibok communities threatening to carry out further attacks.

The attackers, according to report from locals in Chibok, made good their threat at a time the people were all in Church for the Sunday worship. A resident of one of the affected communities, Amos Bulus told Vanguard that, “the attackers killed and burnt houses after attacking worshippers in five churches in Kwada, before moving to Kautikari less than 8 kilometres to Chibok town, killing and burning down people’s houses and property. The security operatives were not on ground to defend us. In fact, those who ran into the bush were pursued and killed by the murderers.”

It was gathered from another source that the people living in Chibok town have fled their homes following the news of the attacks in Kwada and Kautikari.

A police officer, Peter Maina said he was called out from a Church service in Maiduguri, only to be informed that his brother was killed at Kwada when the insurgents attacked the village during church service.

Tears flow from Chibok natives

Vanguard also gathered that Chibok natives resident in Maiduguri could not hold back tears, yesterday, when they learnt that some of their villages came under deadly attacks .

At Chikwarkir village in Biu Local Government Area, a resident, Mallam Audu Zira told Vanguard on phone that the terrorists came in pick up vehicles and motorcycles and opened fire on people before setting houses, and other property ablaze.

He said after killing one person, the terrorists carted away foodstuffs and motorcycles before they fled into the bush.

All efforts to reach spokesman of the Borno State police command, DSP Gideon Jibrin proved abortive as his line was switched off at the time of this report.

Sen. Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District also confirmed the multiple attacks on Chibok villages, yesterday, in a telephone interview in Maiduguri. He said the Federal Government should do more by deploying more troops to the affected areas of Chibok to secure other villages from being attacked by Boko Haram insurgents.

“The military and other security agencies should do more by not only deploying more personnel, but cooperating fully with members of the Local Vigilante Group in fighting terrorism and insurgency in this part of the state. They know the terrains of Sambisa Forest and can track insurgents in their hideouts.

“The two should work as a team to end this Boko Haram insurgency that will clock five years by July 29, 2014”, Ndume said.

Chibok girls: US reduces surveillance flights

Meanwhile, the United States said weekend that it had reduced its surveillance flights in the search for more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram members on April 14 this year but added that the overall effort was unchanged due to more flights by other countries.

“We don’t have any better idea today than we did before about where these girls are, but there has been no let up of the effort itself”, Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby told reporters. Kirby said the same level of effort was being sustained now through international involvement.

A U S defence official speaking on condition of anonymity told Reuters that US flights had been reduced only after a body of intelligence had been gathered and that the cuts had been offset by British and French support.

Muslims are not responsible for Nigeria violence - Prof. Ishaq Oloyede

ABUJA—Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Secretary-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, has called on security agencies in the country to be fair and professional in the discharge of their duties.

Oloyede who gave the advice while delivering a keynote address at the 9th Ramadan Lecture of Muslim Media Professionals of

Nigeria (MMPN) in Abuja described the security situation in the country as serious. The Islamic leader said Muslims in Nigeria were for peace as long as there was justice and fairness, adding, “Muslims are not responsible for the violence in the country. Muslims are for peace. If there is any problem, it is a failure of the system.”

The NSCIA scribe said there “cannot be peace without justice. Our appeal is that Federal Government should be just to all segments of the society.” Oloyede said in the spirit of the theme of the lecture, “Peace and Leadership: The Missing Link”, there should be more consultation and dialogue among the stakeholders in the country.

Speaking on the theme of the lecture, the guest speaker, Prof. Musa Abdur-Raheem said that for peace to reign there must be justice.

“Boko Haram are not representing Islam, Muslims are for peace and most of the victims of Boko Haram attacks are Muslims,” he said.

He called on the leaders in the country to live up to expectations by urgently addressing the nation’s security challenges.

Abdur-Raheem advised all groups to channel their grievances through legal means.

Declaring the event open, a representative of Gov. Babangida Aliyu of Niger, Alhaji Hamidu Kadi-kuta, called on the populace to take steps in tackling the nation’s security challenges.

Aliyu described as unfortunate the security challenges in the country, saying it would slow down developments.

The governor also called on the Muslims to use the Ramadan period to pray for the peace and unity of the country.

Earlier, Chairman of the Association, Abdurrahman Balogun, urged politicians in the country to play politics according to the rules of the game.

“As 2015 general elections approaches, politicians should play the game according to the rules.

“Fear Allah in all their dealings and remember that everyone will account for all deeds in the hereafter,” Balogun said.

Nothing would make him contest in any position in Nigeria again - Peter Obi

AWKA- IMMEDIATE past governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter said weekend that no amount of pressure would make him change his mind to go for any elective position in Nigeria.

Peter Obi Governor Obi

Speaking with reporters at Ochuche in Ogbaru local government area of Anambra State where his former commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Mr. Dubem Obaze received a chieftaincy title from all traditional rulers in Anambra North senatorial zone, Obi, however said he is prepared to serve Nigeria in any capacity.

Obi’s entry into the venue of the ceremony sent jubilation among the audience, with most politicians who graced the occasion swarming his sitting position to greet and have a handshake with him.

In what sounded like a note of finality on the issue, Obi said: “I started telling people during my second tenure in office as governor that I will not aspire for any elective position in the country, but some people thought I was joking.

“Some have even been speculating that I will be contesting for senate for Anambra Central in 2015 or for another elective position at the national level and I want to say here that I have no such ambition.

“However, I am prepared to make myself available for the service of my country in non- elective position.

“I believe that after serving as governor for eight years, I should allow other people go for political offices meant for the state. There is therefore no truth in the rumour that I want to contest for senate next year.”

Obi said he would remain in All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, no matter the nature of assignment he is carrying out for the nation, adding that deliberate efforts would continue to ensure that the party becomes stronger in the country.

With Obi’s statement on his future political ambition, his admirers and political associates who have already started holding nocturnal meetings for the purpose of drafting him to contest for senate in 2015 may have to look elsewhere.

Eagles will fly over France, says Keshi

Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi has declared that his team has no option than to win against France when they clash in the round of 16 on Monday.

“I said before the tournament that our mentality must be strong. Our approach to every match has always been the same: to win.

“Whether we are playing against Spain at the FIFA Confederations Cup or playing against Liberia in a friendly match, I always tell the boys that victory is non–negotiable.

“For us, we will go into Monday’s match aiming to win. But as I also said before the competition, we take it one match at a time.

“We don’t even want to think of who might be lurking in the quarter finals if we win; we are not bothered. All we know is that we must win on Monday.”

France top group E with seven points and they have played some excellent football unlike in 2010 where they were dumped in the preliminaries. With their arrays of stars in all departments they have left no one in doubt that they are candidates for the trophy.

Edo Lawmakers must obey the law, says Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole says the crisis rocking the state House of Assembly has persisted this long because the four suspended lawmakers in the State House of Assembly have refused to obey a subsisting court order, saying those who make laws must be seen to obey the laws they make.

Governor Oshiomhole Governor Oshiomhole

Speaking on the protracted crisis in the state House of Assembly when he granted audience to the leadership of the Edo Civil Society Organization (EDCSO) in Government House, on Friday, Oshiomhole said he spoke to both parties on the matter on the need to settle the matter amicably to avoid distraction in their legislative duties.

He said: “My attention was drawn to the issue and I spoke to the two sides on telephone. I said, you have to find a way to resolve this because I don’t want any distraction, whether we like it or not, the time I spend explaining this and the time you have spent discussing among yourselves to agree, is time we could have used for other things.”

Governor Oshiomhole maintained, “What is at stake is fundamental to the maintenance of peace and security. I can’t be a governor presiding over anarchy. People who lead in making laws must be seen to obey the laws they make.

“I think therefore that on this occasion, the Civil Society which include people who are committed to good governance, people who are committed to building a civilized society have no choice but to tell those disobeying judicial order to go back and obey the order”.

He said, “They struck a deal; namely that the House Members will obey the suspension order by staying away and then the House would set up a committee. The committee over the weekend would have deliberated on the matter and by Monday, they would make a decision to vacate their suspension and the four persons would go back to the House.

Oshiomhole further said, “The two sides told me this is fine, but you see, don’t forget there are rules, if you subscribe to this, it is binding on you. If your members now refuse to abide by it but to subvert it, you have no basis for co-existence.

He added, “What is at stake is fundamental to the maintenance of peace and security because if you cannot appeal to lawmakers to obey the law, is it thugs you are going to appeal to in order to stop thuggery?

Oshiomhole added, “Unless we stand by the truth, we can’t survive as very ordinary people. So I appeal to you to find the courage and pronounce on the side of the rule of law and on the role of protecting the judiciary.

The Governor also accused the Police of emboldening the suspended lawmakers by not enforcing the Court Order on their suspension.

Earlier in his address, Coordinator General, Edo Civil Society Organization, (EDSCO), Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin said they were in Government House to bring to the attention of the Governor some fundamental matters that are centered on promoting good governance and participating democracy in the state.

The organization commended the Governor on the positive wellbeing of the people and the physical infrastructure development in the state.

Eboigbodin begged the Governor to intervene in resolving the crisis rocking the State House of Assembly, saying the matter is bringing shame and unnecessary attention to the state.

Some of other issues highlighted included the arbitrary fraudulent charges and estimated billing by Benin Electricity Distributing Company (BEDC), reconstitution of the Neighborhood Watch and alleged multiple arbitrary levies by agents of government, among others.

Gunmen kill 13 Fulani herdsmen in Taraba

Jalingo – The police in Jalingo confirmed that unknown gunmen on Saturday trailed and killed 13 Fulani herdsmen who were returning from village markets in Garba-Chede and Maihula.

Gunmen Gunmen

ASP Joseph Kwaji, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the police command in the state made the disclosure on Sunday in Jalingo.

He said the herdsmen were waylaid and killed by unidentified group of armed youths along a bush path in the outskirts of Maihula in Bali Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, no arrest has been made but the command has beefed up security in the area to track down the perpetrators.

He added that it was not clear why the incident took place but further investigation would be able to reveal the reasons for the attack and the people behind it.

The Chairman of Bali Local Government Area, Mr Andrew Yerima, said the herdsmen were trailed by the armed men from Garba-Chede market where they were believed to have gone to sell their cows.

Yerima called for calm and advised residents of the area not to take the law into their hands.

Suspected Islamists attack churches near Chibok

MAIDUGURI (AFP) – Suspected Boko Haram Islamists armed with explosives attacked a series of churches on Sunday near Chibok, the northeastern town where more than 200 teenage girls were kidnapped in April, witnesses said.

Human Right Watch Accused Boko HaramResidents said dozens of people may have been killed in the raids on villages roughly 10 kilometres, (six miles) outside of Chibok, but no one was able to offer an authoritative death toll and the military was not immediately available to comment.

“The attackers went to churches with bombs and guns,” Timothy James, a Chibok resident said by phone.

“From what I gathered, dozens of worshippers, including men, women and children were killed,” he said, explaining that his information had come from people who fled the affected area and through phone calls.

Enoch Mark, an outspoken Chibok leader since the April 14 kidnappings, gave a similar account, telling AFP in Lagos, “presently, as we are talking now, we are under attack”.

“We cannot tell the number of dead bodies,” he added. “I was told the attackers burnt at least three churches to the ground.”

Mark further said that the military had not responded to distress calls after the attack began.

“They just went and got a hiding place in the bush,” he told AFP.

While it was not immediately possible to verify the charge, if true, it would likely raise further questions about the military effort in the northeast, the epicentre of Boko Haram’s five-year deadly uprising.

Following the April abduction of 276 girls by Boko Haram from a secondary school in Chibok, parents and local leaders accused the military of doing almost nothing to secure the release of the hostages.

Fifty-seven of the girls escaped within days of the nighttime raid on the school and local officials have said that 219 are still being held.

International outrage has spread since the kidnappings and Nigeria has vowed to secure better secure in the area in the south of Borno state.

2015: Borno APC Takes Over Senator Sheriff’s Home As He Plans To Move To PDP

Hundreds of All Progressive Congress (APC), stakeholders and political office holders from Borno State have turned the Maitama house of former governor and Borno political godfather, Senator (Dr.) Ali Modu Sheriff into a Meca of a sort.

It was gathered that the former Governor’s plan to dump the APC is attracting unprecedented followership, with two out of the three Borno senators indicating seriousness to join the PDP move.

DailyPost gathered that among the eight APC members of the House of Representatives from Borno, six of them have already pitched their tent with ‘Oga Sheriff’.

It was also learnt that 17 members of the Borno State House of Assembly were among hundreds of APC stakeholders from Borno, who recently visited the Abuja home of the political icon to show respect, loyalty and allegiance to him.

Among the 21 Borno Commissioners, 16 were reported to have either gone to Abuja or sent representatives for the same purpose as the other APC stakeholders.

A close associate of the Borno Governor, Kashim Shettima, who did not want his name in print also told DailyPost that the governor is in serious dilemma with the news that some of his most trusted allies are turning the table against him with their recent visit to Abuja.

It was also gathered that recently, Governor Shettima was in the home of some of them.

According to the source, they told the Governor that they were not angry with him, but that they chose to stay away from the Government House because they were getting tired of politics.

However, they were reported to have indicated interest in the new PDP structure to be formed by the former Governor Sheriff after the Ramadan fast.

DailyPost reliably gathered from close associates of the former governor that the planned move to PDP by former governor Ali Modu Sheriff has already been perfected, as the PDP under President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has promised to fulfill all conditions given to him by the former governor.

FG plans to cripple my administration before election - Aregbesola

Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State has raised an alarm over the Federal Government’s plan to cripple his administration before the August 9 gubernatorial election.

rauf aregbesola

Speaking during an open-house session, tagged ‘Gbangbadekun’, where he met with the grassroots people, the artisans, market women among others in Ijebu-Jesa, Oriade Local Government, Aregbesola lamented drastic drop in allocation to the state.

He further accused the Federal Government of a deliberate attempt to weaken states controlled by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Aregbesola, who is seeking re-election for a second term, however, assured that, despite the development, his administration will continue to pay workers’ salaries as at when due.

“The Federal Government, aside from the drop in the allocation, has devised means to cripple our government before the August election by not giving us the statutory monthly allocation”, he said.

“Let me tell you that there are plans by the federal government not to release the allocation of the coming months before the election so as to cripple our government, thinking that we will not be able to pay workers salary. I want to tell you that they have failed because we will device means of paying our workers”.

The governor reiterated his promise that his administration will not sack any worker despite the drop in funds from the federation account.

Muslim-Muslim Ticket: Sensitivity And Peculiarity Of Nigerian People Will Be Taken Into Consideration – Onu

Against the backdrop of the allegation that the All Progressives Congress, APC, is mulling a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in the 2015 general elections, the first executive governor of Abia State and one of APC’s national leaders, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, has said the issue is a sensitive one that when taken, must reflect the feelings of Nigerians and the current mood in the country.

DR. OGBONNAYA ONUOnu, who made this known in a chat with LEADERSHIP Sunday in Abuja, said even though the issue has never been formally discussed in the party, if it eventually comes up, they would look at it based on the sensitivity and peculiarity of the Nigerian populace so that the best combination for the country would be made.

He added that the need to tread with caution on the all-Muslims presidential ticket is made even more serious when considering the fact that the APC as an opposition party that is desirous of taking over the government from the PDP, must be seen to be sensitive to the feelings of Nigerians.

The APC chieftain also revealed yesterday how he singlehandedly initiated the process of bringing together the three ‘legacy’ parties that gave birth to APC.

Dr Onu, who was national chairman of the now defunct All Nigerian Peoples Party, ANPP, one of the legacy parties that makes up the APC, stated that the emergence of the mega-opposition party has changed the political landscape of Nigeria. He also stressed that he was challenged to pursue the formation of the APC when the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, boasted that it will continue ruling Nigeria for the next 60 years.

The two other parties that came together to form the APC are the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). Other groups from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Democratic People’s Party (DPP) also coalesced into the APC.

While speaking on a myriad of topical issues including the Muslim-Muslim ticket, the defection of Malam Ibrahim Shakarau to the PDP and the outcome of the gubernatorial elections in Ekiti state, he said “on the 12th of December, 2004, the then governor of Lagos state invited me to speak to the house of assembly and that lecture was on the need for opposition parties to come together. The opposition had seven states then. However, I had earlier spoken to the caucus of the APP in the National Assembly on same issue.

“I tried to highlight the importance of being together because then the PDP had said they will rule for 60years and it was challenging. So I gave reason why it cannot work. I gave reason why the opposition must come together. As soon as I became national chairman in 2010, I now requested from the leadership of the ACN that we needed to talk and in Lagos House here in Abuja, they invited me and I went there and told them on the need for all of us to work together. By that time, the ACN had only two governors. It was in October that Governor Fayemi was sworn in. It was after that address that we formed a committee”, he said.

On the defection of former governor of Kano State, Shekarau to the PDP, Mr. Onu said he felt really bad when he left despite efforts to make him stay.

“I felt very bad when they left because all of them made very important contributions to getting APC to where we are right now. When the party was being formed, we knew that there would be problems. For a political party that wants to win elections, you should know that there are those who will not be happy with some of the changes. We have our party constitution and manifesto, we talked and I did everything I could within my limit to convince all of them to stay back, but there are certain things that are personal. I feel very concerned”.

He also said the formation of the APC has altered the structures of existing parties including the PDP.

“The emergence of the APC has done a number of things. PDP has always had crises but the people didn’t have a place to go to. They looked at ANPP for example: we had three states and if they join ANPP, can they help them chase the federal government? When I became chairman, ACN, had only two and, after the election, Ogun and Oyo state came in. Now, if you have problem with the PDP, will you go to a party that has only two states? But when APC was registered against prediction made by so many people, APC had 11 governors and they were so spread that every zone had one and this made it a national party. There was no zone that you could not find APC, which was why it was easy for those with progressive credentials to join them. Even if you were born from the same mother, you cannot have the same values, so those who feel the APC had what they wanted, they came over”.

Proffering solution to the current security challenges in the country, Onu said the solution lies in the country’s security organs improving on their intelligence gathering. By so doing, he said, the country can detect and apprehend the criminals that bomb and kill at will in the country.

While commenting on the effect of the just concluded national convention of the party and the purported disenchantment of some leaders like Chief Tom Ikimi and Gov. Rotimi Amaechi, Onu said there is no way a convention with such high number of people can be conducted without some ripple effects.

“I want you to look at APC from the reality on ground. APC is a young party, even though made up of old politicians who were controlling about 16 states until October 16 of last year. There is no way you can conduct a convention with such a large number of people and you won’t hear such reports, but the two persons  you mentioned are very important  members of the party, also very prominent Nigerians. When they have misgiving or concern, I believe that the party is taking it seriously. Everything must be done to ensure that they are happy. It will be the interest of the party to carry all its members along. This journey is not an easy one to defeat an incumbent. We have to start with unity before we can go on. I am very confident that we will be able to solve this problem”.

The former governor concluded by saying the problem of Nigeria stems from the quality of leadership it has been getting and that APC, which is “an incoming government”, will correct the defect.
