Buhari, Tinubu, other APC Caucus in Crucial Meeting

President Muhammadu Buhari last night held a meeting with the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Lagos State Governor, Senator Bola Tinubu and the caucus members of the party.

In attendance were many serving and former governors on the platform of the party including Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara was also at the closed-door meeting which place at the new Banquet Hall at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

However, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar arrived the venue of the meeting after it had started.

The meeting, which started at about 8.30p.m, was still in progress at the time of filing this report.

APC convention: Tinubu, Saraki, others meet at Aso Rock

Leaders of the All Progressives Congress met at the Aso Villa, Abuja, to decide on the party’s national convention.

A reliable source told one of our correspondents that the meeting also centred on how to fill vacant positions in the APC’s National Working Committee.

A source said that the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and Senate President Bukola Saraki, among other leaders were present at the meeting.

The source said that some positions in the NWC such as the National Vice-Chairman (North-East) and National Publicity Secretary had become vacant due to political appointments.

While the party’s former National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, was appointed as the Minister of Information and Culture, the National Vice-Chairman (North-East), Babachir Lawal, was appointed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The source said, “The meeting was strictly a party affair. Some positions in the NWC had been left vacant since the appointments of Lai Mohammed and Babachir Lawal. The positions they occupied have been zoned to the North-Central and North-East respectively.”

The question of who would emerge as the Chairman of the APC’s Board of Trustees was also said to have been discussed at the meeting.

Another source said, “The main issues were the vacant party positions. Members expressed the desire to fill the positions. This is to be achieved by also preparing for the convention of the party where these positions will be sorted out.”

A source in the Senate said that the meeting was for the members of the newly constituted APC caucus.

The source, a senator, said that 19 people were invited to the parley.

According to him, the Senate, the House of Representatives, the Presidency and the party leaders were represented at the meeting.

Drama in Aso Villa as FG justifies Buhari’s foreign trips

ABUJA — It was nothing short of a melodrama at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, yesterday, between State House correspondents and the Federal Government over the many foreign trips of President Muhammadu Buhari during a press briefing.

President Muhammadu Buhari departs on a 3-day official visit to Kenya
President Muhammadu Buhari departs on a 3-day official visit to Kenya

Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information, who justified the trips, said they were necessary to bring the country back on the track of development and growth.

According to him, Nigeria was a pariah state under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said that under Jonathan’s watch, corruption permeated the country, such that foreign investors deserted it.

He stated that it was necessary to tell Nigerians that the trips had started paying off since investors’ confidence in the country had been restored.

Mohammed spoke during a press briefing at the end of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting in Abuja. He said: “You do not run a country by being isolated. The personal presence of Mr. President in many of these fora is important because before now, we were almost a pariah state. And the issues that have been driving investments away from this country are terrorism and corruption.

“One thing that nobody can fault this President for is his determination and strength of purpose in resolving these matters.

“Mr. President’s presence in many of these fora is highly crucial even in fixing our economy back at home.”

Mohammed’s counterpart in Environment, Amina Mohammed, corroborated the position, saying the President  needed not to run the country by staying at home, especially when he had a deputy and a cabinet of ministers to look after home affairs.

Journalists had waited patiently to be briefed on the outcome of the Federal Executive Meeting, FEC, which routinely meets to take decision on matters of government. As usual, yesterday’s meeting was chaired by president Buhari with his vice, professor Yemi Osinabjo and most of the 36 ministers in attendance.

By a little after midday, the meeting had ended with the Minister of Information, Mr. Lai Mohammed, his counterpart in Environment, Amina Mohammed in company with Minister of State for Environment, Usman Ibrahim come into the press gallery inside the villa to brief Journalists.

The briefing was reduced to a two item issue: Climate change and President’s many foreign trips so far, anchored by the Minister of Environment. Done with the briefing, journalists felt that there were more pressing issues at the moment such as the fall of Naira and 2016 budget, amongst others which an important body as FEC should have dwelt on other than reviewing or deliberating on climate change.

Apparently surprised by the insistence and probing question, Information Minister Mohammed, said he was embarrassed and shocked, noting that Nigerians needed to know the benefits of the presidential trips. Also, speaking on the presidential foreign trips, the environment minister stated that a review of the trips vi-sa-via the benefits was made by the council.

“The Honorable Minister for Foreign Affairs gave a brief of four foreign trips that the President has made towards the end of last year. So, we are starting with the trip that happened between  22 and 23 of November  last year in Tehran   and this was to do with Third Gas Exporting Countries Forum.

“This, of course, as you would expect is very important to us in that we intend to have common interest supported by member countries in terms of making sure that our policies are more coordinated and coherent.

‘’The strategies at the international level can bring in the investments we require for all of us. Also to promote national gas consumption as the cleanest fossil fuel,” she said.

Meanwhile, Vanguard learned that President Buhari is due for more foreign trips on Friday and early next week. He is likely to leave Abuja on Friday for Egypt, return on Saturday and leave for Saudi Arabia and Qatar early next week.

Aso Rock security operatives grumble over unpaid allowances

There is currently a disquiet among security operatives attached to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, over their unpaid allowances, The PUNCH has learnt.

President Muhammadu Buhari departs on a 3-day official visit to Kenya
President Muhammadu Buhari departs on a 3-day official visit to Kenya

If not addressed quickly, the situation, our correspondent learnt on Wednesday, might degenerate into a security breach.

Multiple sources who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity said “loyalty of the security operatives had dropped drastically” over the non-payment of the allowance.

The PUNCH learnt that under former President Goodluck Jonathan, all security agents attached to the Presidential Villa enjoyed what they called Risk Cautious Allowance.

The security officers include those of the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police, Department of State Services, Nigerian Intelligence Agency, Federal Road Safety Commission and Fire Service.

It was learnt that Jonathan’s administration paid the allowance up until March last year and left those of April and May unpaid.

The op]eratives are however regretting that since the inception of the present administration, they have not been paid.

Following a media report last year that President Muhammadu Buhari had stopped the payment of the allowance, our correspondent learnt that the security operatives were told by their bosses that the RCA had not been stopped as reported.

They said they were not only assured that they would be paid, but were also promised that the rate would be reviewed upward.

In the past, senior officers were said to be receiving about N30,000 per month while junior officers get about N25,000.

To assure the operatives of government’s readiness to continue the payment, they were said to have been asked to open bank accounts with Zenith Bank Plc where their RCA will subsequently be paid.

One of the operatives however said since last year that they opened the bank accounts, the government had not fulfilled its promise of paying the allowance.

A top Presidency official, who pleaded anonymity, however, told our correspondent that the security operatives’ allowances had been approved in January.

He expressed the belief that payments would soon be made to those concerned.

When contacted on the telephone, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, declined comment, saying the matter is a security issue.

Leak information and risk serious sanctions - Aso Rock warns officials

Workers attached to the Presidential Villa, Abuja have been warned to desist from leaking contents of official letters and files or risk serious sanctions.

General Buhari
General Buhari

The Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Abba Kyari, handed down the warning late on Monday during a send off programme organised for some officials who retired recently or redeployed from his office.

Kyari said a document signed by him found its way out of his office illegally recently and added that such development would no longer be tolerated.

He said anybody linked to any leaked information would face the consequence.

He said, “One thing we cannot tolerate is letters and information going out of this office.  I have seen one with my signature shown to me.

“I do not know who was responsible for that; I do not know why anyone should do that; but please make sure that such a thing does not happen.

“Anything that is written will come out anyway; it is not a secret; but the bad thing is for it to come out before it is publicly made by the relevant authorities.

“So, please do not fall into this trap of somebody asking you to bring a letter, because if by accident you are found or the letter traced to you, clearly it would not be something that we would tolerate.”

Kyari also warned the workers against gossiping during working hours.

He said he would not allow a situation where the officials would engage in “small talks” at the expense of their jobs.

Aso Rock moves to douse tension on missing 2016 budget

Worried by the controversy dogging the 2016 Budget at the National Assemble, there were indications at the weekend that President Muhammadu Buhari is set to decontaminate the odium of the situation.

President Buhari
President Buhari

Sunday Vanguard was informed by usually dependable sources inside Aso Rock Presidential Villa that “some tacit clarifications might be made tomorrow”.

The source disclosed that the difference  spotted by the Senate “does not really affect the substance of the budget to the extent that there is a serious breach”.

Meanwhile, a  former National Chairman of the All Progressives  Congress, APC, and  one-time governor of Osun State, while commenting on the 2016 Budget controversy during an interview, lampooned the Senate leadership for what he described as an act of indiscipline.

The APC chieftain said his party was mindful of  the consequences of allowing wrong people to be at the helm of affairs which was the reason the party wanted disciplined individuals to lead the Senate.

“Nigeria’s budget is a huge document and one wonders how such a document could be missing in the Senate. The development is a  fallout of indiscipline that brought the current leadership of the Senate into the position and, as you know, that was not the choice of our party”, Akande stated. But in a  reaction, the Senate  told  Akande that he got it wrong.  The Senate said it was regrettable that a man of  the former party leader’s  status would  respond to mere speculation without cross-checking his facts or, worse still, eager to latch on to any opportunity to bring to disrepute the leadership of the Senate because he failed to get his choice candidates elected.

In a statement by its spokesman, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Senate urged Akande to check his records properly so that he could see that “at no time did the Senate say the 2016  Budget was missing”.

Rather, Abdullahi noted, the legislative house had insisted in several   official statements and press interviews by its principal officers that the budget was not missing but   that two different versions are now available.

He explained  that the statement by Akande was another expression of the frustration that the former governor of Osun State suffers for not being able to impose his men on the Senate as   leaders.

Buhari is not God; Obasanjo visits Aso Villa to beg for relevance, ministerial nominees - Fayose

* Slams PDP leaders defecting to APC because party lost election

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, has reiterated his position to continue to tell he truth to the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari and his party, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that ”The President is not God, but only leader of our country for a period of time.”

Fayose vows to lead opposition against APC
Fayose vows to lead opposition against APC

Speaking with journalists on Friday, after the Ekiti State House of Assembly declared him the ‘leader’ of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Fayose affirmed that as a member of the opposition, he was not expected to be celebrating the government in power.

“For what?” he exclaimed, adding, ”I will tell them the truth. Opposition helps government of the day, helps Nigerians, to keep them on track. Opposition helps to check dictatorship, opposition helps to check oppression. My being here as governor, my voice today will remain by the grace of God.

“I’m not like somebody going underground for reasons of harassment; it is only shameful that the government of the day is after shadows. You want to be in power, you are in power; you have charged virtually all PDP governors to court, are we saying no APC governor is corrupt in this country? But for me, I’m not going into that; I’m not going to descend into that arena.”

”For everything I say, I say it in good conscience. When I was criticising the President before he became President of Nigeria, they thought I will be quiet after. Tomorrow, if I find him wanting, I will tell him. The President is not God, he’s only leader of our country for a period of time,” said Fayose.

Asked if his declaration by the state House of Assembly as leader of the opposition was in preparation for a bigger position, Fayose said: “I am not interested in anything. Even this one that I am serving as governor, it is the will of God for me. There is nothing to vie for.

“By morals, it can’t be the turn of Yoruba, if truly we are into rotation and for me, I’m not vying for anything. I’m not equally going to the Senate. Senate is what most governors will rush to; I’m not going. I won’t contest for Senate. So anybody expressing anything for me is wasting his time because I’m not going to beg for any office.

“I have gotten to this position because God wants me there and I’m not going to be part of any promotion to position me. No, I still have three years ahead of me. Who knows what will happen in three years time; who knows what will happen in two years time; who knows where Nigeria itself would be. So, we should all strive for the survival of this country first and forget about positioning yourself.

“Great leaders don’t talk about their political placement, they talk about the country’s placement, where the country would be at the appropriate time. But on the issue of what I stand for and what I say, I have no apologies and with all due respect, I have been like this from time immemorial and I have no apologies because this country belongs to all of us.

“This weekend, I will be 55; a lot of people died when they were 10 years old. Some died when they were 20, some when they were 30 or 40 but I’m 55. If I die today, my children will still entertain guests at my burial, you understand. They will equally leverage on my achievements for consolation. Gowon was president of this country at 28 or 29, Obasanjo was president of Nigeria at 37. Today, I’m still battling with the office of a governor and those people we are talking about are still talking in the public after being 80 or 90 years of age.”

Still on Obasanjo, with whom he has been on war path with over the years, Fayose said: “The likes of Obasanjo were looming larger than life at that time, where are they now? They are at Ota; they are begging for relevance now. They go to the villa everyday to beg for ministerial nominees. I was watching him in the papers, whether he was prostrating for Buhari or he was exchanging compliments, I don’t know. I can’t explain it. At certain times, you must know when to switch off; you must know when to turn off and you must know when to go to bed.

“For me, whether they call me leader of opposition or not, whether they call me Ayo Fayose, I’m not even chairman of PDP governors’ forum and I’m not desperate for anything, but you can’t take away my voice. You can throw away my word but you can’t throw me away.

“I remain resolute, I stand by the common man of this country. Tomorrow, Nigerians will appreciate me. It is in turbulent times that we know the strength of character of a man – in turbulent times like this – and it is shame on PDP leaders decamping because of relevance. They should keep their relevance; whatever we do – good or bad – will live after us.”

Jonathan mees Buhari behind close doors at Presidential Villa

ABUJA – For the second time since he exited office on May 29, former president Goodluck Jonathan Monday visited his successor, President Mohammadu Buhari at the presidential villa in Abuja.

The meeting which held behind closed doors at the New Banquet Hall of the State House barely lasted for ten minutes.

Jonathan arrived at about 2.00 pm and left at 2.13pm after the meeting.

Though the reason for his visit was not disclosed, feelers said he may have visited to intimate president Buhari on the outcome of the election in Tanzania.

It would be recalled that the former President led the Commonwealth Election Observer Group to observe the conduct of the Tanzanian General election which held recently.

Aisha Buhari takes over Patience Jonathan"s Office

Notwithstanding the change in nomenclature, Wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, has been operating from the Office of the First Lady located inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja, SUNDAY PUNCH can report authoritatively.

Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari

Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari

Ahead of the March 28 presidential election, Buhari, who was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, had promised that he would not have an office for the First Lady should he emerge victorious at the election.

“The Office of the First Lady is not in the constitution, so there’s no official role for them,” Buhari had said.

As the campaigns progressed however, Mrs. Buhari joined the APC team.

That made observers doubt whether the President would be able to walk his talk.

Since her husband’s assumption of office, Mrs. Buhari has dropped the title of “First Lady” used by her predecessors, including Mrs. Patience Jonathan.

She adopted the title of “Wife of the President.”

Investigations by our correspondent have, however, showed that apart from the nomenclature, nothing significant has changed.

Mrs. Buhari and her handlers operate from the First Lady’s office used by her predecessors, it was learnt.

The office is located beside the official residence of the President.

Her office, like it was under her predecessors, houses her staff members, including personal aides, security details and protocol officials, among others.

She has so far organised events similar to the ones that were not in short supply under her immediate predecessor, Mrs. Jonathan.

The first event organised by Mrs. Buhari was an elaborate “thank you dinner” she organised in honour of APC women and youths for supporting her husband’s election.

The President’s wife, during the recently concluded Ramadan, also broke her fast with some women leaders and the less privileged.

Recently, the Office of the Wife of the President, in conjunction with a United Kingdom-based private firm, organised a seminar on protocol, etiquette and security for wives of state governors.

At that event, the President’s wife charged the wives of the state governors to come up with laudable programmes to complement their husbands’ efforts.

At the conclusion of Ramadan, Mrs. Buhari also hosted children to an elaborate Sallah party.

All these events were held inside the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, with glamour.

Apart from these, the President’s wife, represented by some individuals, had donated either cash or relief items to internally displaced persons and other groups in parts of the country.

Our correspondent also learnt that she is at the verge of initiating a pet project, a platform that will be used to meet specific needs.

That has also been the style of previous First Ladies.

The Director of Media in the Office of the Wife of the President, Zakari Yau Nadabo, confirmed to our correspondent on Thursday that arrangements were ongoing for a pet project for Mrs. Buhari.

Nadabo said the first step was to identify the area where the President’s wife is interested in making intervention.

He said, “It is not about initiating a pet project alone. The first step is to identify the area. The plan is already in the pipeline. Issues are just beginning to take shape.

“We do not want to rush. We want to take our time to do a careful analysis so that we can intervene in critical areas.”

Buhari moves to Presidential Villa

Abuja—President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday evening, moved into the Presidential Villa preparatory to resuming at the State House this morning, almost three weeks after he was sworn into office.

Sources at the Villa told Vanguard that security details and other staff of the Presidential Villa were on hand to receive the President, whose wife, Aisha Buhari, moved into the Villa last Thursday.

Truck loads of equipment moved into the Villa on Sunday evening ostensibly bearing the personal effects of the President, who returned to Abuja from Katsina State, weekend.

President Buhari and his Vice, Yemi Osinbajo, have been operating from the Defence House since they were sworn in on May 29.

Buhari"s wife relocates to Aso rock

The wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, has relocated to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, barely three weeks after President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration was inaugurated.

Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari

Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari

Since they were inaugurated, Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo have been operating from outside the Presidential Villa.

This is despite the fact that both men have their official residences and offices inside the Villa.

Both of them have been operating from their private residences as well as the Defence House, official residence of the President-elect located at Maitama District, Abuja.

Our correspondent gathered that Mrs. Buhari formally relocated to the Presidential Villa on Thursday at a time when her husband was out of Abuja.

“Hajia (Buhari) arrived here (Presidential Villa) with her entourage at about 6pm on Thursday. She had relocated ahead of her husband. She passed the night here,” a Presidency official told our correspondent on Friday.

As of the time our correspondent visited the First Lady’s Wing of the Presidential Villa on Friday, some exotic cars were seen parked in front of the premises, an indication that Mrs. Buhari was playing host to some guests.

Another Presidency official told our correspondent that the President is expected to join his wife inside the Presidential Villa on arrival from his local trip.

Buhari had departed Abuja for Kaduna on Tuesday shortly after he arrived from South Africa where he took part in the just-concluded 25th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.

He proceeded from Kaduna to his hometown, Daura, in Katsina State.

Buhari is expected back in Abuja from the journey described as “private trips” this weekend.

“The President is expected back this weekend. He will be expected to join his wife here on his arrival,” the source added.

Upon his formal relocation to the Presidential Villa, Buhari is expected to operate for the first time from his office on Monday.

As of the time of filing this report, Osinbajo and his wife have yet to relocate to the Villa.

It was not clear whether they will move in at the same time with Buhari.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, had told our correspondent that ongoing renovation work was hindering Buhari from moving into the Presidential Villa.

He had said, “As far as the President is concerned, the place (his official residence) is not ready yet. Workers are cleaning and refurbishing the place. Once the exercise is completed, the President will move in.”

Jonathan, Buhari in closed doors meeting

The outgoing President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari on Friday met behind close doors, inside Aso Rock.

The meeting may be unconnected to the phone call by President Jonathan to Buhari on how to commence the transitional process ahead of the May 29 date for the transfer.

President Jonathan on Saturday lost the general election to Gen. Buhari and also conceded defeat, making history as the first President to concede defeat without tribunal and other post election violence associated with many past leaders.

The details of the meeting were not made public, but the meeting, which was described as private took place at the new Banquet Hall inside the villa.

2015: Amaechi Will Uproot Jonathan, Sambo From Aso Rock - APC

•Says appointment as APC Presidential Campaign DG a masterstroke; congratulates Party Leadership on unity

Rotimi Amaechi Rotimi Amaechi

The appointment of Governor Chibuike Amaechi as the Director General of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation is a masterstroke which will send President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo packing from Aso Rock come 2015. The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) stated this in a press release issued Monday morning in Port Harcourt.

“This well-deserved appointment of our own dear Governor Amaechi demonstrates APC’s seriousness to rescue Nigeria from the grip of an evil party that has enslaved Nigerians and done so much harm to the psyche and economic well-being of Nigeria and Nigerians,” Rivers APC said in the statement signed by its State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya.

Continuing, the party said: “We expect Governor Amaechi to bring his outstanding reputation as a man of courage, vision, principle, winning streak, boldness, strength of character, decency and love of country, as well as his administrative prowess and organisational skills to bear on this task aimed at reclaiming our nation from the doldrums occasioned by an inept, unfocussed and un-visionary leadership. With Amaechi driving the APC presidential campaign, we have no doubts at all in our mind that the days of the Dr. Jonathan, Architect Sambo and the wicked Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Aso Presidential Villa are indeed numbered.”

Directly addressing Governor Amaechi, Rivers APC said: “We are aware of the danger inherent in this present task and we very much appreciate your patriotic zeal in accepting this task. This demonstrates your humility and large-heartedness in view of the politics that played out in the selection of the Vice Presidential Candidate of our great party. That you accepted this assignment shows that your driving force is not your personal gains but what is more gainful to Nigerians. For this we say congratulations as we are convinced that you will prove yourself once again by leading our great party to outstanding and resounding victory in February 2015.

“Your task has been made easier by our great party, which chose two upright men in the persons of General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) and Prof. Yemi Osibajo as the Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates respectively. You, therefore, have very good candidates to market as opposed to the failed rulers presently lording it over Nigerians from Aso Rock.

“Nigerians now have a choice of electing a party to fight corruption and set our nation on the path of greatness come 2015 or continuing with the unfortunate present state of affairs where stealing of our common patrimony is not corruption, according to President Jonathan. Nigerians now have an opportunity to vote out the inept administration of the PDP Government that promotes insecurity and impunity while afflicting poverty and economic woes on the vast majority of our countrymen and women. This is a golden opportunity which must never be wasted because, as we have always pointed out, Nigeria cannot survive another four more years of Jonathan and PDP

Finally, we congratulate the APC Leadership for the maturity exhibited in both the election of General Buhari and selection of Prof Odibajo as the party’s Presidential Vice Presidential candidates respectively without any rancor or division within the party. This we know has sent a warning signal to the sinking PDP that its days in Aso Rock are numbered.

No vacancy in Aso Rock - Abba Moro

MAKURDI—The Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro has declared ahead of the forthcoming general elections that there would be no vacancy in Aso Rock come 2015.

jonathan office

Moro urged all those aspiring for the position of president to jettison the idea and allow President Goodluck Jonathan to compete all the good works he started for the country.

The Minister, who spoke at a reception organised for him at the weekend by his kinsmen at Ede West Ward, in Okpokwu local government area of Benue state, urged the people to also rally support for the reelection Senator David Mark in the forthcoming election.

He said, “I dare say that if we must move away from the politics of ‘chop I chop’ to politics of principles and and the development of our communities, we must rally support for President Goodluck Jonathan.

“In the present circumstance, which we have found ourselves the only person who can complete the good job that he started, the only person who has introduced ideology to drive us to the next level of development is President Goodluck Jonathan and we must support him to succeed.

“In the resent circumstance, I make bold to say that a combination of President Goodluck Jonathan at the helm of affairs and the Senate President, David Mark at the Senate, will present an important catalyst for development in this country.

“They should therefore be supported to continue to do good things for this country because another entrant will amount to a distraction, and we cannot afford it now.

“Therefore come 2015, there will be no vacancy for a new president in Nigeria nor a new senator from the Benue south district. Anyone with such an ambition should please jettison it, in our collective interest.” the minister said.

Day Jonathan refused to sit on royalty stool in Aso Rock

The Presidential Villa, popularly called Aso Rock, has never failed to impress me with its grandeur. Enclosed amidst an aggregation of towering rocks intricately set in place by Mother Nature, hedged around by a man-made canal and shielded from easy view by big trees and tall shrubbery, the Villa had obviously been designed by an architect with his mindset on maximum security.

It was to this splendiferous and pulchritudinous architectural terra firma (apologies to Honourable Patrick Obahiagbon) that I was Jonathan meets with Aliyureluctantly hauled a few weeks ago by my friend and fellow writer, Professor Atukwei Okai, the Secretary General of the Accra, Ghana-based Pan African Writers Association (PAWA). Professor Okai had requested that as a former National President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), I should join the PAWA delegation to visit President Goodluck Jonathan in order to brief him about the association’s activities, especially as they relate to the forthcoming African Writers Day, scheduled for later in the year. Expectedly, the visit was preceded by a brief meeting where the visiting team had a rehearsal before proceeding to the Villa. At the meeting, I met other members of the delegation who included the renowned author and now traditional ruler, Professor Chukwuemeka Ike; David Mungoshi (President, Zimbabwean Writers Association), Sylvie Ntsame (President, Gabonese Writers Association), Sylvester Allortey (President, Ghanaian Writers Association), Nnimmo Bassey (former General Secretary, Association of Nigerian Authors) and some PAWA administrative staff.

During the meeting, Okai explained that in addition to the speech he would read, PAWA would also use the occasion of the visit to confer the award of Patron of PAWA on Jonathan, during which the president would be awarded a certificate and a medal as the insignia of office. These presentations will be followed by a ceremony where the president will be made to sit on a ‘PAWA stool of royalty’! The meeting thereafter allocated specific roles to the team members. My duty was to introduce Professor Okai to the president before Okai introduces members of his team and proceeds to read his speech and present the medal and certificate. This would be followed by Sylvie who will present some books to the president.

The problem was how the president will respond to Sylvie’s presentation, which will be done in French. “That shouldn’t be a problem,” Okai responded. “All that the president needs to do is to say ‘mercie.’” The next step was not that simple; Professor Ike and Okai will lift the president and make him sit on the Royal Stool three times!  I observed that sitting the president on a stool will be difficult to achieve for security reasons.

However, Okai did not see anything wrong in it. As he put it; “the stool would have been screened by the security agents, so, there is nothing to worry about. In addition, several other African leaders, including the ageing President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, have all gone through the process before now.”  After a lengthy debate, the meeting agreed that we should proceed with all our plans.

And so it was that we all departed for the Villa on the appointed day and time. I was no stranger to the presidential power base having frequented the place for meetings during my tenure as a member of the House of Representatives during the time of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was always a good but sometimes austere host. I could still recall an occasion when OBJ had invited the South West caucus in the House for a dinner/meeting. Although the meeting held till the wee hours of the day, all that was served for ‘dinner’ was bottled water, sweets and kola nuts.

Luckily, some of us who had been warned about the president’s austere methods had taken some ‘insurance policy’ in the form of eba and okra soup before the meeting so we were not as affected as majority of the members who went home hungry and angry!

Fortunately, our visit to President Jonathan was purely official and it was kept that way. At the Villa’s security gates, the PAWA Stool of Royalty was given a thorough screening by the courteous yet suspicious security agents who kept admiring the well crafted and beautiful piece of wood work. We were soon comfortably seated in the Villa’s waiting room during which time my friend and member of the literary clan, the current Media Adviser to the President, Reuben Abati, came to pay members of the team a brief visit. Reuben looked much relaxed for someone who had taken a lot of flak in the past few years from his legion of erstwhile literary admirers who thought he had ‘sold out’ by joining the government. I also used the occasion to reconnect with another good friend and now adviser to the president on documentation, Oronto Douglas.  Much of the positive outcome of our visit to the Villa goes to Oronto, a former compatriot in the civil society organisation days. The visit equally afforded me the opportunity to meet the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Edem Duke, who I last saw way back in our secondary school days when we both scribbled for the school’s newspaper, “The Gong.” He was a good writer and I hope he has not abandoned the craft.

The presidential visit soon commenced with the introductions, after which Professor Okai gave his speech. Sylvie later presented our gifts of books in French, leaving a bemused president asking for a translation until one of his aides muttered ‘merci’ on his behalf. Everything went well as Okai presented the certificate and the medal to the president who humbly removed his hat to allow the medal be placed on his neck. Trouble, however, started when Okai beckoned on Professor Ike to come forward and assist him in placing the president on the ‘Stool of Royalty’. Quickly, a protocols officer moved forward and tried to take the stool away from Okai, insisting that the president would not sit on the stool.  However, Okai was determined to carry out the ceremony. “We came all the way from Ghana for this event,” he told the protocols officer. For a moment, there was tension in the room as the protocols officer stood his ground on not allowing the president to sit on the stool. “Just present the stool to the president,” one of the aides advised in the ensuing brief stalemate as Okai also insisted on carrying out the ceremony.   Luckily, a truce was reached as Okai grudgingly released the stool, bowed to the president and took his seat.

In his remarks after the incident, the president thanked the team for coming as well as honouring him with the awards. He apologised for his inability to sit on the stool on the directive of his protocols officer but promised to do so in the comfort and privacy of his office. He went on to enumerate his commitment to the book business, especially the improvement of the reading culture through his “Bring Back the Book” project, which he inaugurated some years back. He also promised to make sure that Nigeria fulfilled its financial and moral commitment to the Pan African Writers Association as well as all activities planned by the association. He thereafter allocated responsibilities to different members of his team in fulfilling his promises.

As we later filed out for the ceremonial group photograph with the President after the visit, Okai was still angry over the refusal of the protocols officer to allow the president to sit on the stool. “It was an unnecessary overzealousness,” he said under his breath. “At least, the stool had been screened for any potential security issues, so why the fuss?”

“The screening cannot detect any juju that could have been put on the stool,” I said, trying to make light of the issue. “Supposing the president sits on the stool and suddenly disappears? We can’t afford that,” I added as we both burst into laughter at the joke.

And even though the visit ended on a good note, a television footage of our visit which showed me chatting with the president after the group photograph later became the object of some enquiries by my friends.

“What were you discussing with the president after the official visit was over?” asked some of my friends, including some political associates. The question must have been predicated by the recent visits of some politicians to the president who were suspected of trying to cross carpet or looking for one form of political patronage or the other from the president. I explained to my friends that I did not go to the Villa for politics but to discuss how to get more Nigerian youths reading and writing.

And as we later waited for our official vehicles to ferry us out of the expansive and palatial structure, I took time to admire the enchanting greenery, the immaculately manicured lawns and the soothing palms that wriggled gently to the rhythm of the daylight breeze. It was a wonderful sight that further accentuated the beauty of the all-white sprawling and picturesque villa. The enchanting ambiance coupled with the recent incident of the president and the PAWA stool suddenly liberated my creative juices.  With a few salacious stories of some missing billions of dollars, ministerial bulletproof vehicles and private jets thrown in for good measure, perhaps a sequel to Tenants of the House could be in the making.
