Civil societies and some traders in Edo State have reacted to the recent ban on social activities in the Government Reserve Area (GRA) by the Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole
Governor Oshiomhole in a special announce had placed a ban on night clubs, drinking bars, worship centres and road kiosk in the GRA, adding that such distort the master plan.
The governor warned that any affected person who failed to relocate to the designated area will have their properties destroyed.
In a swift response, a socio-political group in Edo State, The Solution has cautioned the state governor not to further escalate the suffering of the people by his anti-people policies.
In a statement issued by the group National Publicity Secretary Elder Osaretin Imeware on Wednesday, the group stressed that social activities are part of people culture and it facilitates interaction and bonding, adding that the directives“amounts to tyranny by an overzealous governor who wants to impose his will on how people live their lives even when they have not breached any law.”
Imeware said “It is rather shocking that with serious downturn in the economy, Governor Oshiomole who prides himself as a ‘comrade’ will seek to destroy peoples businesses and invariably, families by his wrongheaded directive banning social activities in GRA.
“What any sensible leader will do is to engender a more pragmatic and progressive climate for businesses to thrive by empowering security agencies to check crime. But what we have in Edo State is the reverse as the governor says we can no longer socialize, build businesses and live happily.
“By now, there is no doubt that Edo people will know they have been scammed by Oshiomole as protest continues almost every week against his anti-people, anti-progress and anti-development policies. The good thing, is, the Solution is near.”
The group advised the governor to concern himself on how he can redeem his poor rating amongst thepeople, adding that Oshiomhole should create the enabling environment for the people to thrive economically.
Similarly, a resident in the area, Victor Ime-Ojeikere while reacting to the decision of the governor said “There are no jobs, nothing is working, no industries and people have decided to go into self help by converting houses to make money so that they can feed their families and now the governor is cancelling all of that. Is he putting any mechaneries for these people to now move to?”
Habiba Ijiose, a kiosk owner who introduced herself as a student and an orphan said ” I am a student, i am an orphan as well. This is what i am using to help myself, i don’t have anybody that is helping me; i know how much i suffered to gather the money i am using to do this business, so if they are asking us to go, definitely they should give us a job”
A resident of GRA, Ogbiesoba Dennis who also reacted to the decision said “I have not seen any shop that is being built by the government that the people want to go to, where do they want the people to go? That is my take about this and i think it’s anti-people policy, it is not going to help anybody, instead it’s going to make people poorer”
