Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has distanced itself from the protest organized by a civil society under the aegis of Talakawa Parliament in Edo State on Sunday.
The group took to the street to protest the imposition of Land Use Charge which was recently passed by the Edo State House of Assembly and signed by the Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
Addressing newsmen in Benin City at the weekend, the group spokesperson Mr. Kola Edokpayi stressed the need to resist a further imposition of tax having subjected the people to other various kinds of taxes.
The spokesperson demanded the governor to give account of the various loans (including the $75m world bank loan and N10bn) and the Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) in the state to ascertain if the monies have been spent for its purposes.
Mr. Edokpayi expressed sadness over the current state of infrastructure despite various loans requested and approved for the governor.
Meanwhile, the PDP in a statement has distant itself from the planning, organisation and mobilization of the protest.
The Publicity Secretary, Chris Osa Nehikhare, described the statement credited to the governor that the PDP was responsible for the protest, as disturbing.
Mr. Nehikhare said ” PDP dissociates itself from the planning, organisation and mobilization of the said protest. We heard of the protest for the first time from the irresponsible allegation that came from the governor.
“We however suggest that the governor should pull up his sleeves and get to work and stop chasing shadows.
“The demands of the protesters are genuine and enjoy the support of a vast majority of Edo people.
“Power arrogance that has intoxicated the state government has made it dumb, deaf and blind to the aspirations of edo people.
Though distancing itself, PDP commended the courage of the protesters to challenge tyranny in the state.
“We congratulate the organizers of the protest for their courage and steadfastness to confront despotism rearing its ugly head in Edo state. We feels your pain!”
