ABUJA (The Presidency Report) – The Nigerian Senate has on Tuesday November 18, 2014 at the sitting of the Plenary and Committee of the Whole considered the request of the Nigerian President for the confirmation of Mahmud Mohammed (Justice) for appointment as Chief Justice of the Federation in accordance with section 231(1) of the 1999 Constitution.
The report from the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters stated that after fielding questions from the distinguished Senators on the conflicting judgments from the judiciary, separation between the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice as well as issues regarding seniority in the bench as it affects appointment into the Office of the Chief Justice and the creation of the Anti-Corruption and Constitutional Matters Courts, Mahmud Mohammed was confirmed as the Chief Justice of the Federation.
The report also said that during the Plenary, the Senators received correspondence from the President seeking to extend the emergency rule in the North Eastern States of Yobe, Adamawa and Borno. Adding, the Senate went into closed session to discuss the correspondence.
“Two bills were also presented for first reading on the floor of the Senate as follows: the Trade Malpractices Bill was presented by Akin Odunsi and the Electoral Act Bill was presented by Ali Ndume (Senators). The Report of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development on the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science Act presented by Emmanuel Bwacha (Senator) was laid on the table,” the report informed.
