A former member of the House of Representatives, and a civil right campaigner, Dino Melaye, led members of his newly formed group, Citizens Arise Movement of Nigeria (CAMON) in Abuja, yesterday, against President Goodluck Jonathan over what he referred to as ‘ills of the nation’ after 54 years of independence.
Dino who is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) took members of his group to different parts of Abuja, chanting different slogan against the federal government.
The activist disclosed while speaking with newsmen that the reason for the protest was to express unhappiness over the current state of affair in the country.
He also lambasted President Jonathan’s Independence day speech over his inability to rescue the more than 200 Chibok girls abducted by Boko Haram since April 14.
He said “I want to say that the president’s speech this morning (yesterday) is not different from the one he has been giving before. It has become a normal tradition. Unfortunately, the President addressed the nation this morning, the 54th birthday of Nigeria and he did not say anything about the missing Chibok girls. This is calamitous and, painful.”
He accused Jonathan that during his administration, insecurity, official corruption, lawlessness, money laundering had gone up.
Dino warned the President that if his demand were not meant, he would protest across the country for two weeks. He listed his demands as prosecution of those involved in the $9.3 million seized in South Africa and setting up of indepenent panel to probe alleged involvement of former Borno State governor, Ali Modu Sheriff and former Chief of Army Staff, Major General Patrick Ihejirika as revealed by Stephen Davis, the Australian negotiator.
