COLOMBO – Nigerians living in Sri Lanka have expressed disappointment over the refusal of the Nigerian Embassy to celebrate Nigerian Independence.
They said independence day is one of the days Nigerians come together and proudly represent themselves as ambassadors of the nation, particularly those out of the country.
Despite the several complains from Nigerians against the former Ambassador, F. A Rotimi who retired early this year, he never missed the celebration and a get together for all Nigerians living in the country.
Meanwhile, the Head of Chancery, Boco while speaking with NAIJA CENTER NEWS on phone yesterday concerning the issue, stressed that the embassy decided not to celebrate Independence due to the insecurity and regular reports of deaths in Nigeria, particularly the northern parts of the country.
An attempt to convince him by our correspondent since some aggrieved Nigerians visited our office, yielded negative response as the embassy insisted that nothing would change what was already decided.
It could be recalled that even the President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan celebrated Nigeria 100 years during the period the kidnapped of the more than 200 Chibok girls were causing the country great embarrassment.
