The Nigerian Security operatives had said few days ago that some politicians found to have links with terrorist activities in Balmo forest, recently raided by the military, were being investigated.
This was disclosed by the coordinator, National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri on Wednesday while addressing journalists on the current security situation in the North-East.
Omeri said the politicians were being investigated because of the recovery of some sensitive registration cards and materials of a prominent political party found in possession of some of the arrested suspects.
Though the politicians and the political party was not disclosed, but a promise to reveal the identity of the people involved and the political party was made after investigation is completed
A source in the military disclosed to NAIJA CENTER NEWS that the political party linked with the Islamist sect is the opposition party, The All Progressives Congress (APC).
It could be recalled that few days ago, Mr. Andrew Rosindell, a member of the British parliament questioned the UK foreign secretary, Mr. William Hague, on the country’s engagement with the All progressives Congress over the menace of Boko Haram.
As reported by The Cable, Hague is mandated to formally respond to Rosindell’s questions in the coming weeks on behalf of the British government.
The questions, listed under “notices for written answer”, were published on the website of the UK parliament.
Rosindell’s queries relating to Boko Haram, as listed, are:
1. To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will commission an inquiry into the international support network for Boko Haram in Nigeria and Cameroon; and if he will make a statement. (Notice no. 204402) To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what discussions (a) he and (b) other Ministers in his Department have had with leading members of the Nigerian opposition party, the All Progressive Congress; and if he will make a statement. (204401) .
2. To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what assessment he has made of the rise in Islamic terrorism in Nigeria. (204387) .
3. To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what support his Department plans to offer to Nigeria in tackling the threat of Boko Haram. (204388) .
4 To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what assessment he has made of links between Boko Haram and other Islamic extremist groups in Africa. (204389).
5. To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will discuss with his counterpart in Cameroon the need for constructive dialogue between that country and Nigeria in tackling Boko Haram; and if he will make a statement. (204390)
The ruling party, The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had over the years accused the opposition of instigating and engineering the insurgents.
If the allegation levied against the opposition is true, it would fall inline with the speculations that the opposition party, APC, was set up by Boko Haram backers who are aggrieved over President Jonathan’s presidency.
