Man in court for saying ‘President Mugabe is too old to rule’

A Zimbabwean policeman has appeared in court after calling 92-year-old President Robert Mugabe “too old to rule” and accusing his wife of being a prostitute, local media reported Wednesday.

Thompson Joseph Mloyi, 44, did not enter a plea at a magistrate’s court in Harare over remarks he allegedly made at a camp shared by police and army, the privately-owned newspaper NewsDay said.

He was granted $100 bail at the hearing on Tuesday and is expected to appear for trial on March 15 for “insulting the office of the president”.

“Without provocation, the accused started shouting, indicating that President Robert Mugabe is too old to rule and (that) he married a prostitute, Grace Mugabe,” NewsDay reported, citing prosecution papers.

Cases of people arrested for insulting Mugabe are common in Zimbabwe and those convicted are often fined. The world’s oldest ruler, Mugabe turned 92 last month and celebrated his birthday at a lavish party.

Despite showing signs of ageing, he recently gave a two-hour television interview and has vowed to stay in power as leader of the ZANU-PF party.

His wife Grace, 50, has become politically active since her elevation to lead the party’s women’s league, and she launches regular public criticisms of officials she perceives as her rivals.

In his birthday speech, Mugabe lashed out at party youth he said were using social media to insult his wife. In December, a ruling party legislator was arrested for insulting Grace during a quarrel with a fellow party official in Victoria Falls.

T. B Joshua curses on Zimbabweans for lying against him

The pastor and the founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, TB Joshua, has cursed some Zimbabweans whom he claimed are spreading lies about him.

The controversial pastor said on Thursday that if the people did not desist from spreading ‘false rumours’ against him, they would be destroyed.

Zimbabwean media claimed that Joshua had predicted that three of their prominent preachers would die this year. The alleged prophecy was contained in a message delivered by TB Joshua in his church in early April.

The transcript of the message was published by state-owned Herald newspaper in Zimbabwe.

Joshua was quoted to have said, “I saw in a vision a flag, the Lord said that’s the flag of Zimbabwe. In the vision behold there were three trees, but of the three trees only one had roots, the other two were standing, but had no roots.

“The Lord said look again and when I looked the other tree had fallen, and another tree was about to fall. The Lord said take this message to Zimbabwe and tell them, I am cleaning up Prophets in their nation, and the work has already began.

“The three trees represent the three well known prophets in that nation, one who has already fallen and the other about to fall harder than the first.”

But speaking through his verified Facebook page, TB Joshua said he did not make such pronouncements because he was not given such a prophecy by God.

He said, “Good morning, people of Zimbabwe. Our attention has been drawn to false rumours spread by the father of lies which are currently being circulated around Zimbabwe. The reward of liars is destruction.

“We hereby curse, in the name of Jesus, whoever is spreading these rumours. Prophet T.B. Joshua can NEVER and he will NEVER give such a message because our God is not the God of confusion. We should be very careful not to touch an anointed man of God and lie against him.

“The Bible says in John 8:44 that satan is ‘the father of lies’. Don’t listen to the father of lies, the sons of lies and the daughters of lies. Do not sit somewhere, hear this or that and come to a hasty conclusion. God requires that we find out the truth from Him first and hold fast to that which is true, as the Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:21.”

“Banning kissing on campus reduces university to a primary school”

The Zimbabwe students’ union on Thursday made war not love over a new code of conduct banning students from kissing on campus at the country’s top university.

In a circular displayed at halls of residence, authorities at the University of Zimbabwe said students “caught in any intimate position such as kissing or having sex in public places” would be punished.

The university also barred resident students from bringing members of the opposite sex to their hostels and “loitering in dark places outside the sports pavilion or lecture venues.”

Student leader Gilbert Mutubuki said students would resist the rules introduced two weeks ago.

“We are against these rules which we view as archaic, repressive and evil,” Mutubuki, president of the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASSU) told AFP.

“We are urging students to resist the rules. These rules reduce the university to a primary school. The authorities need to be reminded that this is an institute for adults who are mature.”

He said the rules, which also bar students from accommodating non-resident colleagues, were meant to curtail students’ right to associate.

“We believe these are security measures meant to limit students from associating.”

Until Zimbabwe introduced tough security laws, university students often staged anti-government protests sometimes joining forces with trade unions and rights groups.

“Nigerians are corrupt”- says President Mugabe

President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, has taken a swipe on Nigeria, labeling the country and her citizens as corrupt. He made the remark during his 90th birthday luncheon hosted by the service chiefs and the public commission.

Mugabe said Zimbabweans are now almost behaving like Nigerians who have to be corruptly paid for every service.

“Are we now like Nigeria where you have to reach your pocket to get anything done,” he said. “You see we used to go to Nigeria and every time we went there we had to carry extra cash in our pockets to corruptly pay for everything.

You get into a plane in Nigeria and you sit there and the crew keeps dilly dulling without taking off as they wait for you to pay them to fly the plane,” said the president followed by a huge laugh from the delegates attending his birthday bash. The current corruption rankings in the world rank Zimbabwe’s corruption a lot worse than Nigeria.

Nigeria is ranked 163 worst corrupt country in the world while Zimbabwe is an embarrassing 170 third from the bottom.

The report was carried by Bulawayo24 News, based in Zimbabwe. (0)
