I"m not coming back to a dead party - Amaechi tells Wike

By Ehi Ekhator

The Executive Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi has reiterated his position on whether he is coming back to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, or not.

Wike Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, and Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike

The Governor said yesterday in Port Harcourt during the inauguration of World Book Capital, 2014, that he is through with PDP, saying that whether President Jonathan returns the oil well in Kalabari and Etche to Bayelsa, Abia and Imo states or not.

He revealed that some PDP members are pressuring him to return to the party, which he referred to as “dead party”

Though he did not mention any names, but he lambasted Wike over his statement that he was begging to return to the party. Amaechi said that Wike does not know what it means to be a minster.

The governor said : “I am not returning to the PDP. That man (Wike), they should check him whether he is okay. I have finished with the PDP. I have told them. I made a promise that if they return the Kalabari oil wells, we will see how it goes, but until that happens.

“Beyond the oil wells, I have told them, they have approached me. If they want, I will call the names of those that approached me, but that is not an issue. There are issues that are fundamentally different. If I am a progressive, it must be seen in the type of life I live, in what I do, how I relate with people and the type of governance.

“I said people should ignore him (Wike). Are you sure that if I tell the PDP that I am coming back in 10 days, they will not send a dance party here? One problem with leadership in Nigeria is that when you are a president, a governor or a minister, what you say must be factual. You cannot be part of gossip.

“So, that young man (Wike), who claims to be Minister of State for Education, who does not know what it means to be a minister, is saying I am begging to come back to the PDP. What is the PDP? I beg you, please, do not ever ask me question about that young man (Wike), because I will not answer you.”

Amaechi also stated that his administration’s initiative had moved from the Garden City Literary Festival to the Port Harcourt Book Festival and also moved on to contemplate establishing a book centre, worth N3.5 billion, not owned by the Rivers State government, but by a non-governmental organisation, the Garden City Literary Association

The Governor who seems not to know how Port Harcourt was named as the World Book Capital guessed that his administration’s effort in the education sector MIGHT be responsible for the nomination.

The NGF chairman said: “The second transformation is, somewhere along line, she (Mrs. Koko Kalango, the Project Director of the Port Harcourt World Book Capital 2014) brought the idea of competing for the World Book Capital and I said, that will not be a bad idea.

“So, we funded her to compete and we won the nomination. It was wonderful that she did that. When she came to me and said we won, I now asked her what the World Book Capital is all about and she explained that it is like the Kane Festival by film makers and that is what it is to book readers.

“We budgeted nearly N4 billion for the World Book Capital. We are building libraries, but I call them reading rooms, in the city. They are about seven and we are having 23 in all the local government areas. We will equip and furnish the libraries.

APC Hails Crowning of Port Harcourt as World Book Capital

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Rivers State Chapter, has described the crowning of Port Harcourt as World Book Capital 2014 as yet another evidence of the visionary and focused leadership being provided by Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

According to Rivers APC, “This feat by Port Harcourt in becoming the very first African city south of the Sahara chosen as World Book Capital based on public voting, beating ten other great cities that include Oxford in England and Moscow in Russia, is commendable. For this to be achieved against all odds and challenges by the present administration in Rivers State simply demonstrates that Governor Amaechi is a visionary and focused leader who has received accolades in this regard by world leaders.”

The party in a statement issued by the State Interim Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, said that “Port Harcourt was chosen because UNESCO could see the great investment the APC-led Government in Rivers State has made in the education of our youths, and they could see the advancement we have recorded. Governor Amaechi’s feats in the area of education that assisted in making Port Harcourt the World Book Capital City is unequalled by any African leader, either in the past or present, churning out over 500 model Primary Schools and 24 Model Secondary Schools that are termed to be better than some universities in Africa, and employing about 13,000 teachers, offering free education with free books and computer-based schools within six years”. The Governor’s weapon in revolutionizing education in Rivers State, Barr Alice Lawrence-Nemi the Commissioner of Education is a
well-known fact. This unassuming Amazon and definition of workaholic is a proud to Rivers State and her people.

Continuing, Rivers APC said: “We are proud to be associated with such a visionary and focused leader of our time. Apart from all these, the administration of Governor Amaechi facilitated the launch of the Port Harcourt Literary Society headed by Dr. Chidi Amuta as an indication that Rivers State has a strong vision to promote and sustain activities that would make promotion of literary activities and literacy a staple in the State’s agenda.

“APC in Rivers State is ready to collaborate with the Governor and other stakeholders to ensure that Port Harcourt is adjudged the best World Book Capital ever in the history.

“APC in Rivers State also totally agrees with Engr. Tele Ikuru, the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, who captured the mood of the moment and some of the challenges when he stated that Governor Amaechi’s administration came in at a period when Port Harcourt was one of the most unsafe cities in the world and for him to rescue Port Harcourt from the hands of militants who were literally governing the State at that time, successfully bid and win for the entire nation the world capital city is the most remarkable feat of his administration.

“It is our prayer and expectation that Port Harcourt’s reign as World Book Capital 2014 heralds’ even greater days in stock for Rivers State under the watch of APC and for the entire Nigerian Nation which, by the grace of God, will come under APC’s leadership after the 2015 general elections.”

Port Harcourt’s reign as World Book Capital 2014 began amid fanfare yesterday with the handover by Bangkok at an impressive ceremony at Hotel Presidential in the Rivers State capital. Dignitaries at the event included Governor Amaechi; former Head of State, General Abdulsalam Abubakar; Nobel Laureate, Professor Wolf Soyinka; UNESCO Director General, Ms. Irina Bokova; former World Bank Vice President, Africa, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili; wife of the Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi; Enger Tele Ikuru, Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. O.D Amaechree, Speaker of State House of Assembly, members of Rivers State Executive Council, Senators and members of Federal House of Representatives from the State, Dr Ikanya Ibiamu Davies, APC State
Interim Chairman among others. The ceremonies continue today and would be concluded on Saturday, April 26.
